Today fire crews battled flames still burning from wildfires that ravaged parts of the island. Over the Historic Town of lahaina, the scene is simply apocalyptic. Most buildings, torched. Some still smoldering. The inferno destroyed much of the town. Everything you see in red. And those who escaped the flames are sharing their stories of survival, but also of confusion. We have two reports tonight. Cbss Jonathan Vigliotti is near lahaina leads us off. Jonathan . Reporter adriana, many are returning home today for the First Time Since this fire hit, and they will face absolute heartbreak. Weve spent the last few days in town. We saw entire neighborhoods that were leveled, and of the homes that still stand, they overlook these Fields Of Ash that search teams tonight are now combing through looking for the missing. Anxiety and frustration as bumpertobumper traffic stretched miles on the reopened highway to lahaina. Residents who were allowed through confronted devastation at the end of the road in what the governor calls the worst Natural Disaster in hawaiis history. Its like were the only things we have now. Reporter before tuesdays massive fire ripped through lahaina, turning 80 of the town to ash, there was chaos and confusion. Lets go reporter Emergency Sirens were not activated, and those in town only fled when the flames were on their heels. What went on in your mind as you saw your town . Just heartbroken. Just crazy to come back and see everything differently. Reporter keila found his familys home Still Standing but surrounded by entire neighborhoods that were levelled. The whole town is just not the same. You know . Its not even its not even here. Reporter now the State Attorney General announcing a comprehensive review of the critical decisionmaking made before, during, and after the disaster hit. Along with no sirens, residents here say the power had been cut off, meaning they had no access to radio or to television. They also say they never received a single text alert. Officials say the power was never turned off, but likely knocked out by the wind. Its unclear if a spark ignited the blaze. It was Fight Or Flight with no warning whatsoever. Reporter Officials Say the majority of the confirmed dead were trapped while fleeing on foot. Tonight state and federal teams are combing through neighborhoods of ash, looking for the remains of those who, without warning, never left their homes. And the question remains tonight, and its one well continue to ask until we get answers from county officials, why wasnt this community evacuated sooner . At this hour, adriana, hundreds of people are still unaccounted for. Ah. That is so tough. Jonathan vigliotti, thank you for your reporting. Maui is struggling not just with the immense devastation but also a staggering economic toll. Tourism accounts for nearly 80 of the islands income, and the Damage Estimate could top 5. 5 billion. Carter evans has a closer look at that impact. He is also on maui. Carter . Reporter well, adriana, maui survives on tourism. So its unusual to hear an order for people to get out, and for those who live here, so many have lost everything to these wildfires, including their livelihoods. Lahaina was a magnet for tourists, and the dollars they spent were the economic lifeblood on this once thriving town, which now lies in ruins. This week, the visitors who normally flock to maui were part of an exodus. The kapalua airport, jammed with people trying to get out. It was just i want to get out of here. It was it was unbelievable. Reporter julie brazil has a lifelong attachment to maui. Her familys taken trips here every year from california for more than three decades. This one ended with an evacuation that lasted 30 hours in a small rental car. Was there any point that you were scared . I was. I was. Theres this long line of cars, and im like, am i going to get out of here . Whats going to happen . Reporter also on her mind, whats going to happen to lahaina. Its completely gone. Theyre going to have to rebuild. I dont know how. Reporter to those who live in lahaina theres no real jobs around anymore. You know, around in town or anything. The bakery where i worked is burned down. Reporter also gone is their way of life. Everyone who came here, it was their happy place, and now everything we knew, cant go to the gelato shop anymore, cant go to the abc stores, cant go to the bars we used to go to. Such a big Sense Of Community and although we still have that Sense Of Community, its not going to be the same for a while. Reporter that uncertain future also gnaws at la tonya parker, who honeymooned in maui. Will you be back . You know not any time soon, to be honest. Hawaiis beautiful, but this was a very traumatic experience. Reporter during the first half of the year, maui had nearly 1. 5 million visitors. Thats a third of all the tourists coming to hawaii in that time, and they spent nearly 3. 5 billion. So along with all the other damage here on maui, those tourist dollars are going to be a huge loss. Adriana . Carter evans, thank you. The weather is playing a Critical Role in all of this. Lets check in now with meteorologist Lynette Charles from our partners at the weather channel. Thanks, adriana. Yes, we are going to continue to watch whats going on across maui as we do have that forecast here. The Recovery Forecast as we do have sunshine, dry conditions out there. We will have a few more clouds as we work our way into the middle of the week. As we go through the rest of today, though, were going to be watching whats happening across the northeast, because we do have that torcon of a three or two. There is a number there so we have potential for tornados. As we move through the rest of the evening time frame, we have three areas that were really watching as we go through the overnight time frame. Up to the east and back to the west as we do have the potential for damaging gusty winds to work their way in through the area and also were watching some hail as well as some tornados. And then, we talk about that heat thats going to be on tap as we go into your tomorrow. Were talking about that heat indices in the teens once again, and this is going to extend to the Pacific Northwest as we head into early next week as well. So, that dangerous heat, i should say, is really going to linger for a while, not going anywhere any time soon. Adriana . Lynette charles at the weather channel. To politics now. It is a tradition as american as food on a stick. Today president ial hopefuls, including former president trump, made the rounds at the iowa state fair. Cbss Christina Ruffini is tracking the it all. Christina, good evening. Reporter good evening. Well, republicans have been canvassing the state for a while now, but trump has never been far from mind, and today, he was there in person. Its a bird. No. Its a plane, as trump rolled into the iowa state fair. Its a Beautiful Day in iowa. Reporter the crush of the Cheering Crowd seemingly undiminished by three criminal indictments now facing the former president. Will you comply with the protective order . They should really try and get this country back together. What theyve done to this country by weaponization. Reporter yesterday, a federal judge in washington granted the department of justices request to limit what trump can say about sensitive material involved in the case, and on social media today, trump lashed out at the fulton county, georgia, d. A. , calling her racist and phony fani willis. Willis is expected to file separate election interference charges by the end of the month. Did you intend to overturn the 2020 election . You know the answer to that. Reporter but trump isnt the only 2024 candidate with Special Counsel concerns. Yet the Attorney General announced he would appoint a Special Counsel to handle the investigations into the president ial oldest son hunter.
