Life well planned. The freeman foundation. By judy and Peter Blum Kovler foundation; pursuing solutions for americas neglected needs. And by contributions to this pbs station from viewers like you. Thank you. Katty this is bbc world news america. Doctors in syria warned of a covid catastrophe, as if the country didnt have enough to deal with already. We have a special report. The u. S. Election cpaign is in his final stretch, one week ago and everything to play for. The new york metropolitan using them of art celebrates its 150th anniversary in style, with a showcase of fashion the ages. Welcome to open in detail the bbc they expect a covid catastrophe. The number of cases across it live is idlib is said to have increased tenfold. The bbc was granted rare access inside idlib. We have this report. Darren the road to idlib has been a journey of misery for so many. This is one of the last remaining parts of syria that hasnt been retaken by the regime. Millions of civilians have funneled into this corner of west syria in an attempt to escape violence, but the people who live here are about to face another threat, covid19. This doctor is the head of the largest two hospitals in idlib, one of 600 doctors for a population of over 4 Million People. Very the of covid tests have been done, while we were here, an average of 400 were carried out today, up to 40 of those tested positive. Corona, anger, poor, security, all of these terms mean for us, death. Darren life is already tough enough air, it is a daily fight for survival. This quickly turns into a mob. There are no masks to be seen. At time like this, prayer is about the only support people here can rely on. But at this mosque, there is no social distancing. And if you thought it was tough living in ibli idlib cy, look at the refugee camps, up to 1. 5 Million People living in filthy conditions prayed this camp is one of the largest. People live on top of each other, sharing everything from tents to bathrooms. This seems like the perfect rating ground for the virus perfect breeding ground for the virus, yet official statistics show only a handful of people here have tested positive. One of the reasons is that only people showing symptoms and willing to come forward are being tested. But there is a stigma that comes with being a covid carrier here. Little zane has the virus. He cght it from his father. People have treated me as if i am disgraced. If they see me in the streets, they walk away. A couple of days ago, i want to get groceries from the store, and people moved away frome as if i am the virus, as if i will kill them. Darren unlike zane and his father, most people prefer to suffer through the illness in silence, which in camps like this means they are super spreaders. Would you say the virus is out of control in the camps . It is out of control. Absolutely. This winter will be very bad, very dark, very hard. We dont have many places for pele in camp. We dont have fuel for children and the elderly and the women to keep warm. We dont have food enough for them. Darren no one really knows just about the out rake is in the camps. This is a population who have already endured the worst. It is hard to imagine, but if the outbreak in the camps is as bad as predicted, life here is about to become even harder. Darren conway, bbc news, syria. Katty they have lived through almost a decade of war, now they have a pandemic to deal with as well. We are one week away from the u. S. Election. Yes, lots of people have cast early ballots, but next tuesday, millions of americans will stand in line to vote for the next esident of the united states. Candidates arent wasting any minute before november 3 to drum up support across the country. Heres what President Donald Trump had to say a few hours ago at a rally in michigan. We are going to have a great, red wave, people that want to go out and vote. They want to go out and vote. It is a great, red wave. It is happening in florida. We are up in florida. Katty democrats have also been busy on the campaign trail. Former president barack obama has been campaigning in florida, hammering away at the partys key message abt the covid endemic. More than 225,000 people in this country are dead. More than 100,000 Small Businesses have closed. 500,000 jobs are gone in florida alone. Think about that. And what is his Closing Argument . That people are too focused on covid. He said this at one of his rallies. Covid, covid, cid, he is complaining. He is jealous of covids media coverage. Katty barack obama there. Casting ones ballot is a ritual centuries in the making, yet this year, it does feel unique. It is democracy in the time of covid the pandemic upended every thing about this campaign and may have even put unlikely states in play. Our north american editor jon sopel is in one of them, georgia, where the polls are surprisingly close. Jon one week to go, and joe biden has georgia, of all places, on his mind. No democrat has won here in decades, yet the polls suggest this once solid republican state is there for the taking. Famous Southern Hospitality was markedly absent from hundred of trip supporters who lined the roads leading to where the democratic candidate was speaking. So where are we with the 2020 race between donald trump and joe biden . The key to this election is what happens in swing states. Joe biden has a steady lead in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania, the three Northern Industrial states that propelled donald trump to victory in 2016. But he is also level or ahead in iowa, georgia, north carolina, and arizona. And it is theame picture in florida and texas. And were joe biden to win one of those last two states, it is hard to see how donald trump could wind. The remarkable phenomenon about is election is early voting. In 2016, 135 million americans cast a ballot in the president ial election. With a week to g so far more than 60 million americans have already voted. That means, if turnout remains the same, well, nearly half of americans have already voted. What is also so astonishing is the number of young people who voted early. In 2016 in michigan, 7000 people aged between 1829 went to the polls before polling day. This time around it is over 140,000 so far. In other words, a 20fold increase. There is a similar story in florida and north carolina. Andy georgia, that number and in georgia, that number is 31,000 in 2016 and already 170,000 this year. Im proud to be american. Jon these numbers are expected to favor democrats, donald trump says a red wave of his voters will be coming to vote to propel him to victory. Today hes in route to michigan, wisconsin and nebraska. And there is a sophisticated data Mining Operation that takes place at these events, ensuring everyone who attends is also registered to vote. This was his successful 2016 playbook. Jon sopel, bbc news, warm springs, georgia. Katty one week to go. The rest of the world is also keeping a close watch on the outcome of the u. S. Elections. In this final week, we will be talking to our correspdence around the world to find out what other nations may make of the possible outcome. Tonight, south america correspondent katy watson, aced in brazil. Katie, thanks for joining us. Start in brazil. What changes for brazil if joe biden gets elected . What stays the same if donald trump gets elected . Katy if biden gets elected, it will be much tougher for Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is nicknamed the trump of the tropics. He looks up to trump for policies. Look at the w they both handled of the covid crisis. Here in brazil, bolsonaro has been accused of not handling the crisis properly. Bolsonaro sees trump as an ally. I dont think that relationship is necessarily reciprocated in the same way. So losing trump as a regional ally would have a big impact on bolsonaros strength. With biden in power, i think he will be much tougher othe environmental record here in brazil. Bolsonaro has been criticized the world over for his environmental record, in the amazon doing very little to improve his record there, and that get much tougher for Jair Bolsonaro if we were to see biden win. Katty what about mexico, where you used to live. How are the mexicans looking at this election . Katy if you look back to when trump was elected, i was living there and there was this feeling of fear of what was to come, because h was labeling mexicans as rapists and murderers and there was a narrative that mexicans were watching and waiting for what would come. Although we havent seen it to the same extent, certainly the tough immigration policies and the way mexico has been received, i think a lot of people in mexico are feeling, if we see somebody like biden, it couldnt get worse, maybe there will be some changes. But when it comes to the president , back in july, he and trump showed themselves as friends. What matters is the domestic policy, and im not sure that is going to change with trump versus biden. Immigration issues will still stay. I think perhaps there will me a bore will be a more humanized and compassionate approach to the issue of immigration, but it wont go away necessarily. Katty briefly on trade, when you were there, it was nafta, now that is the usmca for mexico. Is trade all wrapped up with america or could there be further changes . Katy that was something biden also backed and that is something mexico is very focused on. Mexico relies heavily on the u. S. , and for the u. S. To bounce back, whether it is biden or trump, that is something mexicans are going to focus on. But lopez oberador, for him it is a domestic policy that goes on in the country. Katty katy, another country in the region that might be affected is venezuela. President trump supported Opposition Leader juan guaido. Could there be a change in policy and the white house if joe biden becomes president . Katy t is very important as a country because of the amount of venezuelans in the u. S. And other will vote. I dont think the issue of sanctions will go away. Joe biden has said sanctions are important. He has back juan guaido as well, so they are on the same page in that respect. But i think what we will see is not so much that aggresse tone of sanctions, and just punishing maduro, but trying to help the venezuelans with humanitarian issues within venezuela, trying to make sure they are taken care of in the csis we are seeing in venezuela. It is not going to change on the ground too much, but ill change, the human aspect of the policy toward venezuela. Katty katy watson in brazil for us. Thank you, the issue of venezuela playing into domestic politics, because there are a lot ofhat is wayland americans who can vote, and live in florida, a key battleground state. At least seven people are killed in more than 80 children and teachers are injured by a bomb blast on a Religious School in a pakistani city. The motive for the attack on a koran study class is unclear. Hundreds of students were present at the seminary. No group has said it carried out the attack. You are watching bbc world news america. A panel in nigeria has launched an investigation into claims of Police Brutality in lagos. Coming up. Katty t u. S. Has signed a military agreement with chinas regional rival india. Both countries have agreed to share sensitive satellite data, against a backdrop of the luke perry standoff with india and beijing. Correspondent the basic Exchange Cooperation agreement between india and the u. S. Is seen as something that will strengthen ties between the countries because it allows them to share information when it comes to maps and geospatial data, when it comes to military operations. That is seen as a boost. At the wider context of this visit, two leading u. S. Cabinet ministers, iall about countering chinas growing influence in the region. The u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo, youve got secretary of defense mike esper, flying halfway across the world during a pandemic a week before a president ial election, for these talks. That is to show you how important this is to the administration. Katty one week after Nigerian Forces shot peaceful protesters, and uneasy, has returned and uneasy com has returned to lagos. Amnesty International Says 12 people were killed in lagos that day and 56 people have died since the protest began. We have more, warning, some viewers may find the images disturbing. Correspondent it was a bloody night. A bouncer hired by antiPolice Brutality demonstrators to keep everyone safe became a victim of the violence his peers have been calling. He says all the shooting started tuesday with the army. Police arrived later and coinued the killings. Both police and the army did not need to be there. They hit me with a gun on my head, on my body. I fell to the ground and pretended as if i was dead. There were shooting other protesters. There were shooting them in the street, gunning them down. Correspondent shooting is said to have continued throughout the night in a suburb. The shooting at the gate has been one of the biggest tests of this relatively young democracy. What played out h cemented the dissatisfaction many young nigerians feel toward their government. An entire generation has been alienated. British Nigerian National e phraim. I dont want anyone to die. I am my mothers only child. I have to think about my mother. I dont want harm to anyone i know. Correspondent the day after this shooting, he filmed the injuries of others caught in the violence, buhe says many didnt make it, claims he saw soldiers throwing at least three bodies into a truck. That time, that place, that night, after seeing bodies thrown into the truck, i felt i was going to die there. Correspondent while the demonstrations in nigeria have been put on pause, in london, members are calling out the events of tuesday night. They believe nigeria can do better. This kind of protest is never been done in nigeria before. And for us to have one voice and one mission, it takes a lot. For a better nigeria, never. Never. This is home to 200 Million People. And those lives have tmean something. Katty that report from nigeria. Lets get more now on the u. S. Election. There is a lot of information out about this election and there is also a lot of misinformation. But trying to figure out what is true and what isnt has become a contentious issue for social Media Companies. Today, facebook removed several instagram and facebook pages operated by individuals in mexico, ira and venezuela, which went against the site policy on foreign interference. The social media gia also announced they wil stop new political ads to limit the spread of inaccurate information. Here is the bbcs suzanne campbell. We have identified that iran and russiaave taken specific action influence Public Opinion relating to our elections. Suzanne once again, u. S. Intelligence officials have warned American Voters of meddling from abroad. In 2016, the u. S. Intelligence community determined russia interfered in the election. This year, iran and china have allegedly joined the effort as well. A purported iranian Information Operation sent people in the u. S. Email threats appearing to be from a farright Extremist Group called the proud boys, ordering them to vote for donald trump for president , or else. But russia is still considered the lead meddler. Democrats are accusing the administration of playing up raining interference to minimize russias interference tradition or come intelligence officials warned tt a damaging story about democratic candidate joe bidens son hunter may be a disInformation Operation. Social Media Companies have been concerned about americans spreading the misinformation, and National Security officials like Elizabeth Newman are alarmed by the longterm effects of the chaos. You were in that apartment of homeland security. How concerned are you about the politicizing of foreign interference . How big a threat is that, compared to foreign interference itself . Things russia has been doing for five or six years, things iran has started to do in the last three or four years, it is working. We no longer trust our government to be able to tell us the truth. We are extremely cynical of anybody having good intentions and trying to protect our country. Suzanne we spoke to democrats and republicans who had faith in the intelligence community. Dry think theres meddling . Of course. Do i think we are on the ball with it . Of course. It was more a factor in 2016 than now, because people are now much more aware of it. Suzanne ultimately, meddling by Foreign Countries is about casting doubt on the democratic process. And much like four years ago, whether that meddling actually s an impact may not be clear until well after the election. Bbc news, virginia. Katty here is something we are watching more closely, having learned the lessons of 2016. New rks metropolitan museum of art is marking its 150th anniversary. It is putting on an exhibition about the changing niche changing nature of fashion. Our bbc correspondent explains. Correspondent in the world of fashion, everything is new, and everything stays the same. Look at these dresses. Some are more than 100 years old. And some are much more recent. This giant pendulum represents the passage of time in the evolution of design. Instead of staging and masterworks shall, show, we wanted to have a show that is a meditation of temporal reality in the fashion industry. With the effect on color and cops and a pleated skirt. It only costs three pounds 17 and six. Correspondent fashion is and always has been a hugely important and lucrative business that has fascinated men and women throughout the decades. Almost all dresses here are in black to emphasize the change in silhouette, paying tribute to the famous and not so famous. Part of the show is that you get wellknown designers, but the best designers have sort of been written out of fashion history, because they are not so wellknown and didnt maintain your business. Correspondent who else do you invite a show like this than anna wintour, editor and chief in vogue . The show runs until early next year, showcasing the showcasing the unusual and the timeless
