Life well planned. The freeman foundation. By judy and Peter Blum Kovler undation; pursuing solutions for americas neglected needs. And by contributions to this pbs station from viewers like you. Thank you. I am laura trevelyan. This is bbc america. President trump touts progress on a vaccine and says he will not impose new Administration New pres. Trump hopefully whatever happens in the future, who knows what administration it will be. I guess time will tell. The u. S. Is shattering records on coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. As the pandemic accelerates, west coast governors and says the people avoid travel. How the president is more popular than you might think in one town of brazil as local elections are held this weekend. Laura welcome to world news america on pbs and around the world. For 10 days after the u. S. Election, the final states have been called, and the president will not concede that he lost. The number of people hospitalized from covid19 breaks records here in the u. S. And mr. Trump broke his silence this afternoon. He said that millions of doses of the corona virus will be available. Pres. Trump as soon as april, the vaccine will be available to the entire operation with exception of places like new york state where for political reasons, the governor has decided to say, i dont think that it is good political, i think that it is right bad from a health standpoint. He wants to take his time with the vaccine and does not trust where the vaccine is coming from. It is coming from the greatest companies in the road. The greatest labs in the road. Laura joining us now is anthony zurcher. We have not really heard from the president as the coronavirus pandemic has been raging here in america. He had a vaccine . Hey day. He talked about tens of millions of doses available as soon as there is final fda approval for those doses would go to the elderly and at risk by the end of this year. The general public would receive them by april. The note about andrew cuomo, the governor of new york, that is in reference to whether or not this white house would be able to distribute effectively the coronavirus vaccine. Clearly, donald trump is still feuding with his democratic critics, particularly the government of new york. Laura did the president have anything to say other than rather bleakly about whether he would concede this election. Nothing to say about it, except as you mentioned, by saying time will tell, what administration will be taking power next year, i guess that there is a little bit of doubt there. It is a little bit different than what we have heard from the president , as you mentioned the locks on that he spoke publicly, eight days ago, when he said that he won the election. The he would ultimately be proven to be right. Now he is saying that time will tell, and we will have to see what happens. That is typical donald trump language when he does not want to say anything definitive. Buildout creeping in there. As you said, still no concession, despite the fact that arizona it was just called for joe biden and that joe biden has a Comfortable Lead in the electoral college. He has more of a 5 million lead in the popular vote. Laura thank you so much for being with us. As the president says, the vaccine will still will soon be available. Uscs and explosion of coronavirus cases. A record 67,000 people in hospital due to covid19 great with thanksgiving around the corner, the governors of california, oregon, washington state, urge people to avoid all nonessential travel. In illinois, chicagos mayor has asked people to stay home for the next 30 days, starting monday. A similar move may be posed statewide. In michigan, the governor has warned the hospitals are running low on equipment. In new york city, the number of positive cases among those tested has hit 2. 6 , and the mayor has warned the Public Schools may close as early as monday. In new jersey, it is seen its highest daily total since april. The city of newark has a 9 00 p. M. Curfew. And california is on the path to join texas to reach the second state to reach more than one million cases. We speak with dr. Jeremy faust now who will speak with us. So the president says that the vaccine will bring the coronavirus under control and that no National Lockdown is necessary. What is your response . Those are not compatible claims. When the vaccine calms it will be a great help and could be the thing that gets us out of this. We are going to have to see the final data find out what it really means i the other hand, need to have enough arms of living people to inject the vaccine into. The idea that we should pursue lettingveryone out and essentially embracing the herd immunity strategy and also at the same time saying oh by the way, if there is a vaccine, it makes absolutely no sense. So is incoherent and dangerous and quite frankly, i usually do not get political. But a new administration cannot come soon enough. We need real leadership. Laura we do not have a change in administration until january 20. In the meantime, how much strain is all this putting on our hospitals . Incredible strain. In the spring, we saw a major decrease in the hospitalizations with everything except coronavirus. People were not out and about. They were not getting into accidents. There are fewer heart attacks. A lot of it we actually begin to think is because there was fewer there were fewer heart attacks because there is less pollution and less stress on the environment. In the fall, we are seeing our usual accidents and medical emergencies on top of coronavirus. If that continues the way of the trends that we have seen so far over the next weeks and months, we are going to be in for a world of hurt in terms of our capacity and ability to keep the most number of americans alive enough to receive the vaccine. Laura we have governors on the west coast urging people to avoid nonessential travel. Do you think well get through with thanksgiving around the corner . I hope it does, because every physician i know is not proceeding as usual. With my family, we are not doing what we normally do. We do not want to risk it. We watched a future. We are not willing to sacrifice our future just for the present. The message that im sending to everyone who will listen, please. This is a true emergency. Lets hold on and think ahead. We want everyone who is at risk to be here in six months to one year. So that we can have many more thanksgivings and that this would not be the last one. The message needs to go out that we do not like the fact that we cannot travel. But we should accept that. It is a shortterm consequence of our inaction so far. Laura dr. Jeremy faust, thank you so much for joining us. Faultlines are appearing in the face of public support for President Trump. The president make substantiating claims that the election was riddled with fraud. We are joined now by a member of President Trumps transition team. We heard the president talking about not knowing who the next leader of the administration will be. Do that he is coming closer to conceding . I think that he is running out of options. A loss in arizona was dropped. We are getting closer and closer to the date where there are no options that remain open for him to accept that results, and begin once the next phase of our transition. Laura if the president does not goracefully, dessie risk drama damaging the trump brand . It is a competitive it is a combative, disruptive brand. Thats how the 72 Million People who voted for him cmp or i do not think that his behavior will shock or dismay his voters. I think that also prevents the country coalescing behind joe biden and having that one present atne time. The presence brand kobe find with his supporters. The president s brand will be fine with his supporters. Doesnt this undermine joe biden. I think that you have seen republicans do not believe that joe biden has one. I think the president has achieved his goal and keeping the country coalescing behind him. Way to go through the fake russian collusion thing. I think that trump is adding a legitimate question marks to joe bidens election. I think atome point we will move beyond it, but this is where we are now. Laura we hear that the president will drop by a rally of supporters here in washington dc. To think well see a lot of that in the coming weeks . I think you will see the president become a shadow government for joe biden. He spoke a lot about the vaccine, which he takes a lot of credit for. The vaccine will start being distributed during President Trumps term. And joe biden and his admin efficient will play no role in the vaccine. You will see and next year, 2021, traveling the country, reminding people of the role that he played and how critical it was for us to get started up again. Laa how long until they president cooperates with the Biden Transition Team . I dont think that we will ever see him cooperate. I think that the president feels that the rules were changed midstream by some of these democratic governors. He feels that joe biden is illegitimate. He feels that the rules were changed in the middle of a cricket match. I do not think that you will ever see the president recognize joe biden as legitimate. He does have a valid point. The rules are changed and the middle of the election. Laura republicans could have voted by mail, too. But the rules change. In sportsmanship, you do not change the rules and the middle of the match. Laura its a pandemic, not a match. The constitution is still constitution. The constitution still provides the rules. Some wedge lectures got it right and some that got it wrong. Some legislatures got it right and some got it wrong. You see pennsylvania got slapped on the wrist. They cannot cancel some of the votes that came after the deadline. That is another example of the courts saying that the governors do not have the absolute authority. They exceeded the authority. I think that you always had that shadow over joe bidens head or his four years of legitimacy. Laura thank you. The president is doing his best to put one there. Well, the tension between President Trump and president elect biden places World Leaders in a tricky position. Results president is one of the few has not congratulated mr. Biden.
