Hello everyone thank you for joining us at 5 oclock tonight, im Catherine Heenan we continue to follow the many wildfires across the bay area tonight. Were going to begin with what so far has been the deadliest most destructive fire were talking about the l a new lightning complex fire. Its burned more than 350,000 acres across 5 counties Sonoma Napa Solano lake and yolo those flames have killed 5 people destroyed more than 900 structures, hundreds more are still threatened. The fire did grow overnight to more than 352,000 acres did go up a bit from 22 to 27 . As weve seen firefighters are making slow steady progress on the fire and the north a lot of times like guerneville rio nido they do remain evacuated. Kron fours dan kerman hes in guerneville tonight to explain why that is the case dan. Well as you see behind me catherine you can see that plume of smoke it might look like fog to you, but that is armstrong would status what is currently on fire. The most recent and the closest throughout that is to guerneville as well as rio nido firefighters have been attacking that for days now weve got a look inside armstrong woods just a few hours ago to see what theyre doing. Firefighters were back at it in armstrong woods tuesday trying to extinguish this part. Of the walbridge l a new fire. Thats forced the evacuation of numerous towns along the Russian River including guerneville cool it down slow down and eventually suppressed and it is the goal here to keep it above these communities along this area for days now the fire has been burning in this heavy dense redwood forest with steep terrain limited access and lots of fuel ready to go up in flames. Big challenges that weve had here weve had years of as sudden oak death issues and so we have a lot of dead trees up on the hills. Weve got a its been 97 years since weve had a fire here fortunately, an air attack on monday really help knock down this portion of the fire air support that weve had over the last couple days is a plays a key role in not calling this fire suppressant enough that crews can get into those areas. Without posing life safety risk still even when the fire is put out across these 800 plus acres it will be some time before those 1 million annual visitors can return to armstrong woods weve lost a lot of bridges. Weve had a lot of weve got some Water Systems fail. We have hazards of above here in the trees. All of these trees have branches and potentially the trees themselves can fall down. So it will be some time before it will be safe to be back in armstrong, whats. The most of the Parks Department say the one possible bright note in all of this is is those trees that do end up coming down will allow room for new seedlings to come redwood trees to come in. They say there havent been much in the way of new trees so this could. Caused somewhat of a rebirth a next generation of trees in this area that is the one upside as this fire continues to burn here. I just outside guerneville reporting live Dan Kerman Kron 4 news all right dan thank you very much. And the a fastmoving flames, they also pushed through Solano County and 00 30am tonight. We will take a closer look at how the city of fairfield was spared from a lot of the destruction. Another destructive series of fires of course weve been tracking the czu lightning complex its in the mountains and send the tale and and santa cruz counties, this particular fire has burned more than 78,000 acres. It is an area that has not seen like this in decades. Cal fire says more than 300 structures have been destroyed 32 have been damaged containment and went up a little bit overnight 17 more than 1600 personnel are on the scene trying to prevent further destruction and were tracking the scu lightning complex fires in contra costa Alameda Santa clara, san joaquin and standards last counties more than 363,000 acres have burned across the 5 counties only 15 contained a flat last word, 5 people have been injured more than 20,000 structures are threatened in that complex and wildfires are burning not just here in the bay area but across the state of california. That has cal fires resources stretched relief in with the fire season really thats only just beginning for more details on the ongoing firefight were joined now by Daniel Berlant with cal fire daniel thank you so much for joining us. Give us a bit of a update right now particularly but the bay area things are getting better. Yeah, absolutely our firefighters are making progress on a number of from the north bay to the state of the south bay progress is being made. Weve had more favorable weather than we did just last week and thats allowed us an opportunity to strengthen our containment lines take a stand against this wildfire in just in time because we are expecting the temperatures to return back to us unseasonably dry and warming trend. So daniel i imagine that means that there are crews are trying to get as much done as they can while the weather is a bit better and of course we keep hearing about. Fatigue how are the frontline a cruise doing. Well our firefighters are working 24 hours a day tirelessly to protect communities that remain threatened by this fire build containment lines and do everything we can to stop these but you know it has been a very long fight already know that lightning siege started saturday august 15th and so were well over a week now into this siege as well, but these fires were on the heels of several major fires down in southern california. So many of our firefighters have been working now for weeks at a time weve read averted them as we made progress on on the southern end of the state moved them up north. But you know this is unfortunately a potential sign of whats to come here was going to ask you about that apparently fire season, you know starting earlier. Getting bigger that this kind of thing will be we keep hearing the word hope not but the norm. So do you agree or things likely to follow that pattern. Historically california experiences, its largest in its most damaging wildfires in the months of september and october so for us to have this level of activity in is is not a welcome now its not unusual completely unusual for us to have these type of lightning siege is 2008 if you remember we had a significant fire activity caused by lightning and even going back, you know 2 decades before that back in 1987, but to have the amount of destruction as far as acres burned thats what puts fire cj in the record books. So i you we know youre getting more help than a lot more help coming in from other states that may never be enough but how does that stand tonight. Right now we have over 14,000 firefighters on the front lines of these fires that weve continued to see some additional assistance the state of montana overnight a crews arrived in california they are now ready to go on to the front lines. We have several 100 other for firefighters from other states to assist us as well our partners at the National Guard activated as well flying helicopters and aircraft as well as guards members that have been trained as fire crews, they are hitting the front lines as well so really this isnt about above the all approach were hitting it with everything we have and really its so important right now that is we are so busy with these Mother Nature sparked fires that the public do their part to prevent sparking more fires because we really just cant afford another fire now say all right Daniel Berlant with calfire thank you so much for your time. And your updated and know we appreciate it. Well as the wildfires continue to burn we want to turn things over to meteorologist Mabrisa Rodriguez mabrisa give us the latest on the kind of conditions. Firefighters are facing tonight. Yeah, thats right catherine of are going to notice once again a repeat pattern of last night with a deepening marine layer starting along the coast breading inland during the overnight hours with plenty of sunshine by our wednesday afternoon. But the one thing that we are going to notice that certainly going to be beneficial for firefighters during the overnight hours will be the moisture content relative humidity up to 80 to 90 for most of our inland areas near 100 along the coast and east bay shoreline certainly going to help them with pop of flareups but future humidity will show by wednesday afternoon a little bit drier tomorrow than it was today with relative humidity 30 to 40 for most of our inland areas specifically in the valley so future wind gusts today, not really going to be an issue and tomorrow was well going to see winds out of the west southwest at around 20 Miles Per Hour less. But cooler weather for wednesday. So were going to truck cooler weather fairly breezy winds. But also the return of that moisture content overnight that will benefit firefighters as they battle all of the wildfires in and around the bay area and we are going to notice warmer and drier weather after wednesday later this week into this weekend more coming up in my full forecast in just a few minutes back to you catherine all right members of talk in a few minutes well with dozens of wildfires across the bay area. The new guidance will be released as california continues to see declines in its overall Positivity Rate hospitalizations and icu admissions in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. And our time to take a live look outside a looking embrace a youre not heard who can talk about outside. Were talk much spare the air and of the many wildfires the air quality meibrys and that obviously continues to be a problem how to conditions look you know if you take a look outside especially along the coast tracking the return of that marine layer in addition to that smoky and hazy conditions so that smoke and fog also known as smog right now blanketing the bay area coastline and we do have the spare the air alert. That is going to be extended from now all the way through friday. We will notice some improvement this weekend with moderate amounts of air particles. The areas shaded in yellow will become more widespread throughout the bay area by this weekend. But from now until then tracking unhealthy to poor quality. When it comes to air particles in the bay area with the poorest amounts of pour air particles right now over San Mateo County heading southward into the south bay pretty widespread yet again for those of you in the east bay, so unfortunately you are going to continue to see the brunt of those porter particles even for your wednesday afternoon unhealthy amounts though for everyone else in the bay area, lets take a live look outside because we are noticing. The return of the marine layer that is going to become more widespread during the overnight hours cooling down temperatures along the coast in the upper 50s to low 60s 61 degrees for Half Moon Bay 62 for downtown San Francisco san jose in the mid 70s at 77 degrees with the widespread low 70s to upper 60s throughout the east bay shoreline oakland 72 degrees.
