KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am October 10, 2017

Mile region. Again, welcome to the 9. Gasia mikaelian is at Cardinal Newman high school and half of the classes were destroyed there. She spoke to the principal and he had never received more calls from alumni than he did with people wanting to help, students and former students from the family of Cardinal Newman. Despite the damage, hopeful that they will have class up and running. I would like to interview you with the Highway Patrol because getting lost in the mix is glen ellen and highway 12 that runs up and down toward kenwood. You know the area, mike, a beautiful area and a lot of the trees were damaged by fire. You heard chp say the trees could come down. And the power lines, and the the power lines. Right and it will be a few days. Look at the detours on the map. The purple areas are the roads that are closed, highway 128 in napa county, parts of highway 121 and 221 and in santa rosa. Even though the freeway is open, a lot of the offramps are closed. For now, we want to give you a look at what we know. The confirmed death toll remains at 11 with 7 victims in sonoma county, 2 in napa county and one each in yuba and mendicino countys. Cal fire said at least 1500 buildings have burned. Many individuals have not been able to get in touch with relatives or friends because of the lack of cell service. A lot of people are saying i dont know what happened to my home but at least they are safe and they are itchy to get back to their house and see if its there or not and no one has been able to tell them. If people are tweeting me you have to thank a lot of people are probably in the same boat. Yesterday when i got home t kind of hit. When youre in the mix and working and doing your job, and it hurts to find out more people that i know, personally, who has lost a friend with parents and inlaws who lost their homes. Right. Many people who were evacuated i have another friend with a home up at safari west. That home is okay but all the neighboring homes are gone. They all want to get back and as the chp officer said, safety first. Right. They are trying to obviously get people out first and save lives and then start to open the road. Infrastructure is critical and a lot of power is still out. Gasia at Cardinal Newman, they dont have power. Tens of thousands of customers without power right now. Weather wise, i was going lets go to the News Conference getting underway from the napa county sheriffs. Information on the fires in napa county. Same thing as yesterday. We will give you one by one and add Additional Information today. At this time, i would like to introduce our congressman, our senator, and our Assembly Member to speak on Emergency Declarations and support that were receiving from the outside. Thank you, supervisor. Im mike thompson. I represent this area in congress. First, i would like to say that everybody on the ground working for the people of the affected area are doing a fantastic job and i would encourage everybody to listen to what our First Responders, our First Responders and our fire and our police say. They are doing everything they can to make sure you are safe. Please listen and follow directions. Heard froms to federal aid, as soon as the state finishes their declaration of disaster, the federal government almost immediately provided for fire, federal fire assistance grants. That helps in a number of areas, along with the state declaration, helps to allow for the other areas to come in for mutual aid. It also provides important funding to the affected area. We have also put in for assistance from fema. That request has been made. I sent a letter signed by myself and jared huffman, the other congressman from sonoma county, represents the other half of sonoma county, to the white house. Yesterday, travel with Sheriff Robinson in napa and later with the Sheriffs Department on an overfly of sonoma, took a number of photographs. All of those have been submitted to fema and the white house so they understand exactly how serious and devastating this fire is on the people of our area. So we expect them to be moving quickly. I spoke with a fema director last night. They are understanding of the situation and will hopefully move quickly to declare both public assistance, and thats the federal money that will come to the affected area to do the repairs as needed and the response as needed as well as the individual assistance, and thats grant money for people who who have been harmed. Along with that comes a low interest loan program, so all that is in the works. Senator feinstein called me this morning. She is fully engaged in this. She is pushing. Nancy pelosi, the democratic leader, spent a lot of time on the phone with her yesterday, she, too, is engaged. The entire california delegation will be pushing to get the response and funds as soon as possible. I turn it over to senator dodd. Good morning. First and foremost, you noticed that the congressman eluded to the Emergency Declaration put forth yesterday morning, signed by governor brown. Ive been in contact with the governor and the pro tem and speaker of the assembly as well. One thing i think is important to reiterate is the great job that the first stoppedders have done. Sheriff robinson and the entire team from the california chp and local cities and mutual aid we have and our fire chief and all the Fire Agencies that are coming forward to help. One challenge that we do have is connectivity. We are working hard to try and get that back. I talked with oes last night and they have given me assurances todays the day. But we need to get that going. Thank you very much. Good morning. Thank you everyone for attending today. Yesterday, i had the opportunity to take a ride up into silverado with the Sheriffs Department. Nothing is more devastating than to see a family see their home for the first time. Today with the support of all the people behind us, we are trying to get people in their homes, and lets face it. We have to make sure its a safe time to do that. It will take a lot of patience and compassion to do so. The governors Emergency Declaration is paramount. We can get resources and help people get drivers licenses and the help they are looking for. They have obviously lost a lot. I want to thank all of you, but, please. Have compassion with these people. This is a difficult time for all of us and a difficult time for all of us behind you. We want to make things happen quickly. Quite frankly, it will take some time. Thank you. We certainly understand the desire for information. This morning, we are going to give you as much detail as possible. The 2017 napa fire complex is comprised of three fires. At this time, we do not have any idea how many evacuees we have. We do not know how many structures have been affected. This is not a fire we are facing from a firefighting standpoint right now. This remains life safety. Same as yesterday. We are working on evacuations, making sure that the scenes are secure and people are staying away from the danger zone and allowing Law Enforcement to access those areas. At this time, we will go into speaking about updates on each particular fire. Good morning, everyone. Alfredo pedrosa. The atlas peak, we had 25,000 acres burned as of 5 25 this morning. Its about making sure that people are safe. Safety is the number one concern right now. These have caused evacuations on atlas peak road, medical evacuations and monticello road, atlas peak to circle oaks, soda canyon, the avenues, olive hill, monticello park, silverado country club, Wooden Valley road, comsville road to wild horse valley. Silverado trail to sage canyon between silverado trail and now a lot of folks are asking where folks are going to. For our district, its the Napa Valley College gym, 2277 napa valley highway in napa. And we have Crosswalk Church at 2590 first street. There was a lot of air attack in our district. I had a chance to visit our district yesterday. We will do everything to keep you safe and make sure that you guys and gals can go back to your district. Our concern is your youre safe. Good morning. I am the supervisor for the tubbs fire. The city of calistoga is safe. Power was restored yesterday afternoon. The tubbs fire has not increased in size that we know of but Petrified Forest road is closed, highway 128 is still closed. The road from calistoga up to nice valley. So the main thing we want to size, we have a voluntary evacuation north of tubbs lane. Please, stay out of the evacuation areas if you can. We will be going on the radio, and chair ramos will talk about that in a moment, to communicate the message out more because so many people do not have, as senator dodd said, access to the cell service, or, in my case, no power anywhere where i live in santa lina. Thank you for getting the message out as much as you can. Im the supervisor for the first district, and i will talk about the little brother of the other two big fires. We have about 1000 acres but still zero containment. The mandatory evacuations, henry, henry to dealy, duhig at loss amigos at cuttings worth. We had last night, 30 people staying at the Crosswalk Church and 100 people staying at the Napa Valley College. We understand, and we are very concerned that loved ones are looking for their family. Theyre looking for their friends. Certainly, communication has been a struggle to achieve locating families. We want to encourage people that if you are looking for information for a loved one, the best place is www. Safeand well. Org. We cannot release the names. They have to be done through the web. But we courage people at the shelter to register and other evacuees to register and even if you have not been evacuated, go ahead and register so that communication is there for people who may be looking for you. Well be establishing Access Points for communication and work with the Library Director to have that be an additional source of communication. At the time, comcast has opened a public wifi service in the following zip codes, 95401, 95403, 95404, 95405, 94558, 94559, 94903. These complimentary sessions, we are grateful to comcast, will be open through friday october 13. Once a hot spot is selected one thing hot spots, xfinity Wi Fi Network and launch your browser, and tell take you to the hot spot ones in the location. So certainly, communication is key. At this time, we will go into particulars of safety. And i would like to introduce sheriff robertson. John robertson, napa county sheriff coroner. Its with sorrow that i tell you today we confirmed two fatalities, charles and sara rippey, ages 100 and 98, were unable to be evacuated from the 100 block of westgate in napa county. Our thoughts are certainly with the family at this time. Thank you. As of now, there are 27,000 people without power in napa. A lot of downed power lines, and when i went home last night to check with my family after a long day, there are people at home without power and without wifi and dont know whats happening especially if they are near a fire zone so pg e will be working on restoring power for those areas outside the fire zone, and they will work with cal fire on the other areas restoring Power Forward to napa. Thats in progress. More safety is people wanting to get home. We understand that people want to get home just to check on their house or get home and get back to their closet full of clothes, take a shower. We get that. But its super important that everyone comply with evacuation orders for a good reason. Chief . Good morning. Barry bier man with Cal Fire Team management 3 and the fire chief. Currently in the evacuation areas, we have a lot of devastation that has gone on. As discussed here today, theres a lot of people that we understand want to get back in there. The number one priority is the safety, the safety of the public and the people evacuated and the safety of our First Responders. Before we get back in the area, there is a process to ensure that safety and repopulate. Its typical in areas where we dont see smoke, understandably people want to get back in. But its not safe to do that until we secure the utilities, the gas lines, and make sure that the trees will not fall down on someone. That is a process that were already starting to work on. However, its not as easy as one would hope to ensure the safety. I ask to please be patient as we work in the areas. The fires are still out there and still actively growing and we will update acreage and containment daily as we get the information. Resources still continue to be limited. We have folks on the fire line starting their third shift that were not relieved. There are folks not able to come in with so many fires. We are having to share resources as there are many priorities and communities affected by this. Everyone is working hard, not only trying to get people back in the area that the fire has gone through but also the area that still continues to have fire. We still continue to have active fire in all locations. We are, unfortunately, continuing to experience additional structure loss that happens and due to the fire growth and the winds yesterday from a Northern Wind to a southwestern wind to the evening and pushed the fire back in different directions. Our team is over seaing the partrick fire and the nunns tubbs fire and at last peak fire. Thank you. Oh, excuse me. One last thing that came up. Right now, the people who want to start using things like drones, we ask that you please refrain from drone use you in any fire areas. If you fly, we cannot fly our aircraft. We have aircraft on all of our fires trying to contain the incidents. Please make sure that the drones do not go up. Thank you. Additionally from a safety and utility standpoint, we ask that you call 7072044347, Environmental Health matters. Again, for sewer backup into your home, 7072044347. Of course, being able to share the most relevant and up to date information is what the eoc is tasked to do. We know that brings comfort to people whether they are in the evacuation zones or not. We will continue around the clock to provide the most up to date information and simply because someone is not getting that mixed message, it doesnt mean that the information isnt coming. It means that something has not changed. Again i will reiterate the platforms we are using to distribute the most current information, the countys website and it includes fire incident maps as well. You can check that out, and we are using social media platforms of facebook and twitter. We are using mixel, email or text based. To receive the alerts, you may text your zip code to 888777. Or you can go online and sign up for the emails at mixel. Com. Its available in spanish also. We are continuing to coordinate with our Media Partners and we thank you all for being here today to be able to get the message out to our residents and to those concerned about our residents. The napa county employees need to check in with supervisors or Department Heads to see if its essential work staff because of the chp advisories. Public information, General Information only. To reiterate, we cannot give details about specific people. Again, i would like to reiterate that this remains a life safety fire event. We will continue to ensure and prioritize the safety of our residents. We will continue to maintain security areas with the evacuation zones. We ask people to be mindful of their health. There is a lot of smoke in the air. If you are feeling ill, our clinics, we are staffed up with the clinics at Napa Valley College and Crosswalk Community church. We ask people to help each other. Please be mindful of your safety and your neighbors safety. To reiterate, we dont have approximations of evacuees or the number of structures. Well keep the residents and all of those concerned informed. This concludes our press conference, and well take questions at this time. Was anyone else reported missing . Any persons missing reports that you have right now, people that you may find to be missing . We have had questions and people are checking Evacuation Centers and with friends and things like that. The inability for us to community through social media and things like that has restricted our ability to community communicate with the public. People are seeking that on their own and going to the evacuation sites and checking with them and with friend whens they can. No, sir. How much aid do you think napa needs . I dont know if you can quantify a number. Napa county will need aid both in fighting the fire, keeping people safe and dealing with the aftermath. We are going to make sure that we work tirelessly to ensure that they get all the money that they need. As you no doubt know, theres a huge backlog in washington in regard to disaster funding. Napa county hasnt received all the funding that they are due from the last natural dispafter disaster that we experienced. Its important that congress do itself job and appropriate the funds so they are available when napa county, any other county in this state or any other state has a disaster such as this. People need the help, and its the governments job to provide the help. Congress has a responsibility, and they need to live up to the responsibility. Has the white house reached out to you or as i said, ive spoken with fema. They are aware of this. All the documentation was sent to both fema and to the white house and as i continued, last night at a at an event in sacramento, an unrelated event in sacramento, the Vice President had stated that the federal government will be here for the areas in california that were hit by severe fires. Lets talk about safety for a moment. We were out live all mor
