So far chp is not identifying the victim or the driver. No one else was hurt. This is the first time a pedestrian has been killed in san jose this year. A group of homeless mothers who moved into a vacant house in west oakland are due back in court this morning. We are live in hayward where a judge focused on the mothers and their children being allowed to stay. Reporter thats right. Court begins at 9 00 a. M. The mothers believe they should be allowed to stay in the home. The owners of the house want them to leave voluntarily and peacefully peacefully. Look at the house they are fighting over. Its located in west oakland on magnolia street. The homeless moms and their kids entered without permission back in midnovember. They started the Advocacy Group moms for housing to draw attention to the amount of home sitting vacant during the housing crisis, but the Real Estate Investment company that bought the house evicted the families earlier this month. The moms do have a lot of support. Oakland Community Land trusts offered to buy the house and rented to do these moms but the moms attorneys said that the Real Estate Company will not negotiate with them. The women filed a claim of right to possession. The Oakland City Council members support the moms. They wrote the Council Members a letter accusing them of supporting illegal activity. By attempting to steal the sum, squatters are harming others like themselves whose money was used to purchase this and other foreclosed and distressed property. Renovate them and sell them to firsttime homebuyers. Earlier this month theyve also announced that it wants to use this house to provide jobs for at risk youth and to give a firsttime homebuyer an opportunity to buy into market. Thank you. A woman accused of hitting a man with her car will be in court today. The 22yearold is accused of murder in what appears to have started with a family fight. Police reported it started on Christmas Morning when two men confronted each other while on the sidewalk. One of them pulled out a gun and shot the other. Reportedly, it she saw the gunman and hit him with her vehicle. Police say they believe the shooting victim and the gunman are all related. Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil to honor the three teenagers killed in a car crash on christmas night play last night candles were lit in memory of twins michael and mark and their cousin javier ramirez. All 16yearold students who lost their lives in the crash. The mother of the twins was overwhelmed when she saw so many people out there showing their support. A motive for the shooting is not yet known but Authorities Say there is no ongoing threat to the community. Churches across the country are reacting to that shooting. Police say Grafton Thomas entered a rabbis home and stabbed to five people a Hanukkah Party on saturday saturday. Team responded and confronted the men and they were able to arrest three of them. Officials in oakland have identified the man who died in an apartment fire. The fire broke out saturday night in an apartment on 47th street. Officials say the 62 yearold was found in the kitchen. Officials believe he likely died of smoke inhalation. According to tips, fire officials believe that fire was likely sparked by a smoking material like a cigarette. Firefighters noted there was no smoke detectors in that unit. Democratic president ial candidates on the campaign trail today with the Iowa Caucuses less than six weeks away. At this time in the race, there is no clear front runner. The Iowa Caucuses kickoff february 3rd followed by the New Hampshire primary on the 11th. Californias primary is set for march 3rd is one of 14 super tuesday contests on that day. Russia, china, and iran involved in joint military exercises. This past weekend they conducted drills in the gulf. The military exercises, amid heightened tensions in the region. The drills are meant to deepen cooperation between all three countries. One democratic lawmaker says the exercises should be a wake up call to American Foreign policy leaders. Wheres the Republican Leadership when congress is saying, no, we are going to stand up to russia and iran and china and make sure this type of military threat against the United States is held in check. Olympic officials calling for the countermeasures following the discovery of asbestos in the water polo facility. Asbestos is mainly used to fireproof and insulate buildings for medical experts link the material to various types of cancer. A japanese newspaper is reporting the asbestos was found two years ago on part of the roof of the International Swimming center. They started the Advocacy Group moms for housing to draw attention to the amount of homes sitting vacant during the housing crisis. Wedgwood, the Real Estate Investment company that bought the house in july, says this house is not vacant. They evicted the families earlier this month. Moms have a lot of supporters. Oakland Community Land trust offered to rent it to these working moms, but the Real Estate Company will not negotiate with them. The women filed a claim of right to possession. Oakland City Council Members support the moms. Wedgewood wrote them a letter accusing Council Members of supporting illegal activity. Part of it right, by attempting to steal this home, the squatters are harming others like themselves, whose money would be used to purchase this and other foreclosed properties, renovate them, and sell them to firsttime homebuyers. It wants to use this house to give at risk youth jobs and to provide firsttime homebuyers with the opportunity to get into the housing market. Firefighters noted there was no smoke detectors in the unit. Hundreds gathered in dublin for a vigil to honor the three teenagers killed in a car crash on christmas night. On wednesday the minimum wage increases to 12 per hour for workers at small companies. Its 13 for employers who have 26 or more workers. The highest minimum wage in the bay area will be 16. Commuters who use the transit will see an increase in fares. Most riders pay an additional 50 cents for all one way trips. That means it will be 6 with use, disable, and seniors paying 3 across the bay. There will be no discount for using a clipper card. Discounts continue on the local routes.
