Navy hospital ship has left virginia and is in route to puerto rico. The comfort is carrying 522 medical personnel and is loaded with medical supplies. With resources scars some in puerto rico are choose to go leave, many packed on a crew ship heading to the u. S. Mainland and some say they will never return. Those staying put on the island are enduring long lines , for basic necessities, including gas. Eyewitness News Reporter alycia nieves is in puerto rico and talk to some people waiting in those long lines. She joins us live from the town of caguas south of san juan, alycia. Reporter ukee and jessica were still in front of the long lines you are referring to you can see right here we will pan over so you can see how long it is, it is at least a football length and a half people have been waiting here for hours and this is exactly the reason why we came here, so many people, in philadelphia, and back here in puerto rico as soon as we got off the airport said go outside san juan because you will see devastation and desperation, and that is what we did see. So we headed down, to caguas and we captured that footage on our drive here showing some of the devastation, as we headed down here it took about 30 minutes to get here and that is a drive i have done before i have been in this area before and driven down to see my family. That highway we were on, it was usually a lush, green, highway and every where would you look, there was greenery. What we saw were trees almost all dead, ripped from the ground, not a single one, even the won that managed to stay standing have leaves on it and when we got there, it got worse, and, they have fallen on peoples properties. Trees, damage homes, well, the win when maria hit, hit off the roof but damage here at this point as i mentioned earlier is war of the worries. People here told us supplies are not getting to them, still this is only 30 minutes from san juan and they are in the getting those supplies. We saw rinds of people like we have right here, waiting for water and ice, even though and i stress this even though they know that there is no water or ice here. They are just hoping at some point, ice, will be there and when it does they will be ready. Others we saw in the Mountain Area found a home where there was water coming out of it and they are drink ago this water even though they are not sure fit is safe to do so with you they are desperate. Now a lot of people along the way, the only thing that is getting them through right now is faith. We have problems. That is only way. Reporter that man that used the phone, that man is right here actually. So three hours ago, three hours ago we spoke, he was waiting, almost four hours. You are going on a total of seven hours. This still has no ice in it. Every four hours they are trying to pre dues ice to get it out to people. But we have been here total of seven hours and he still has not gotten any ice. The desperation, from the people that we have talk to today is just, they are just really isnt word for it. Alycia, getting in touch has been just so, so very difficult, how is communication, on the whole there in caguas . Reporter so, on top of the supplies, right and on top of trying to get food and water people are worried about their families and trying to get a hold of them. This is why we are broadcasting from this particular location, is there one cell tower that is functional and working here. So in this general area there are people now that are able to get a hold of their loved won. This man right here, you have family in philadelphia, right. Philadelphia, new york, chicago. Reporter yes, he has family in philadelphia. Yes. He has been here for four hours. But he has family in philadelphia he just got a hold of his family to say he is okay, even though these go through this. We met a man with family in berks county. He isnt able to get a hold of his family but we sent a message to them, through us. We will have that coming up at 6 00. Very good. Alycia, we will see you then, thanks very much.
