John, good morning. Cell phone video helping police piece together what many of these people are calling the scariest time of their life. Initially many people thought the cracks they were hearing are fireworks, but it quickly became clear that this was an attack. What sounded like automatic gunfire rang out late sunday night. The bullets spraying into a crowd of roughly 40,000 concertgoers on the Las Vegas Strip. These videos captured the chaos unfolding on the ground. There was confusion about where the bullets were coming from, or even if they were bullets. Some were frozen in panic. Others fled for their lives. And all of a sudden, we heard, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Countless times and we all thought it was firecrackers. And then it kept ongoing, and then he fired for a bit, and then he fired another 15, 20 rounds and we realized it was fully automatic. Reporter police say the gunshots came from above. We determined there was a shooter on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay. The police engaged the suspect at that location. Reporter the suspect is now dead, and authorities are still trying to piece together the scope of the carnage. Right now, we need your truck. We just need to get people to the hospital, okay . Okay. Reporter the people were ska scattered, and bystanders were trying to get those hit by gunfire to the hospital. Some were falling and screaming and yelling and running, and everybody was literally laying on top of each other trying to get out of the way. Reporter and here sadly, were bracing for what could be worse with the hospitals pact with the wounded. The sheriff has warned that death toll of 50 may well go higher, jeff. Oh,boy, john. We are dreading this new. Thank you very much. Well check in with you. Gail davis was at the concert when the shooting started. She joins us from las vegas. I cant imagine how you are feeling at this second. Im so glad that you can join us right now. What can you tell us about what you saw and what happened . Well, its kind of just shocking, but, you know, you dont expect Something Like this. We went there to see jason aldean really. It was a threeday show, and we went to see jason. He is my favorite singer, and we got there, and we were standing, like, maybe halfway up, and just waiting for him to come on stage. He came on and about 20 to 10 00, and he sang about five songs and we heard about three or four little pop, pop, pops, and everything looked around and said, oh, its just firecrackers, and then we heard pop, pop, pop, and it just kept going and going, and my husband said, thats not firecrackers. That sounds like a semiautomatic rifle, and then everybody started screaming and started to run, and i looked over to my right where this girl had been standing right beside me, and she had fallen first, she stood there and grabbed her stomach and she looked at her hands and her hands were all bloody, and she was wearing, like, a little crop top and, you know, blue jean shorts and cowboy boots and she looked at her hands and her hands were bloody, and she just kind of screamed and fell back, and everybody started yelling and there were guys there, and we rt s started jumping up and down waving for help, and we heard a whole bunch of shots fired, and people started running and so my husband said, get down, get down. We bent down, and everybody was running straight up, and you could see people getting shot and people falling and then my husband said, gail, we have got to go. We have got to go. We have to get out of here or were going to get shot. We started running and there was the little i dont know where the Concession Stands are, a little cubicle kind of things of tents and we started to run and a met ro officer who you owe my life to, he said, come here. And we went inside and the lights were on, and Everything Else was dark. They turned the stage lights off, and we went running in there, and he said, get down. So we got down and i was there. My husband was in front of me, and there was another two ladies behind us, and the officer actually cover med up to protect me from being shot because i couldnt get out all the way, and it was, like, you could hear the shots just, like, going back and forth and ricochetting, and and then they would stop, and then we thought, okay. Its over. Its over, and then it would start again, and this happened a couple of times, and the officer stood up and i heard op his radio say, we have active shooters, and i heard him say, oh, god. And he walked out to look around, and he had his gun out, and he was looking around, and then it started shooting again, and he came running back in and covered me up again, and the shooting would just stop. Like he or she or whatever was refilling or whatever you call it, reloading, and he said, we need to get you out of here. So we went to another little tent and stood in there or we laid down in there, and that officer was with me. He was like my Guardian Angel, and he never left me. We could hear the shots getting closer it seemed, and my husband got hit with shrapnel. He goes, gail, i think i got some of the i dont know what you call it. Lead or something, and feel how hot it is. The shooting kind of stopped and it kept stopping like they were refilling or something, or reloading and the officer said, we need to get you it out of here. We have to get you out of here, but stay low, but we went to get out the back but we couldnt because there was a door, and we pushed it down and we ran out. He said, stay out of the light. Just run. Just run and keep down. Keep down, and as were running, theres people laying everywhere. People were bleeding and one guy was holding his girlfriend or wife, or. He was crying and saying, im so sorry. Its my fault, and she had been shot in the head and covered with blood. We ran and there was just ambulances and police cars everywhere. It was heartbreaking. It was unreal. You are painting an incredible story. We are so sorry you had to go through Something Like this. It sounds absolutely terrifying. How long did this shooting seem to last to you . Well, it seemed like a long time, but maybe only ten minutes, it seemed. You know, maybe 15 minutes. It seemed forever, but then again, it was, like, so fast. Your mind plays tricks on you and its hard to say, but i have never been that scared in my life. Gail, how many people were in the area where were watching . Oh, it was packed. It was packed because jason aldean is the number one singer and he was the last singer for the venue, and for the show, and so everybody was there having a good time. It was packed. I dont know, thousands. It was just packed, you know. Everywhere. Gail, where is the officer who helped you . Do you know where he is now . No. I saw his face, and im going to try to go down to metro and see if i can find him and look it a his pictures because he saved me. I know. I just the girl that got shot was right next to me. I dont know. I wish i can find them. Im going to try to find him and tell him thank you. That Police Officer like you said, a Guardian Angel for you and your husband there. Can you describe the rest of the scene though, in terms of security . How quickly did you see First Responders run towards the scene and start helping the wounded . Almost immediately. The metro was there. They are always right there, you know . The metro is such an Amazing Police force, and they were right there. Ambulances were coming. We had ambulances everywhere. There were police cars everywhere, and the Police Officers were helping the other concertgoers were helping everybody. It was just amazing. We all came together, and everybody was helping everybody. It was wonderful to see,and i just love metro. Im just so proud of them. A lot of people are giving big kudos to the Las Vegas Police department. It would not have made a difference in this particular shooting, but did you have to go through a security device when you went into the concert today . Yeah, when walk through. I didnt have anything because i, you know, i dont carry anything. They all look at your backpacks and stuff, but its very secure, and my husband saw the shots from mandalay bay. They were, like, a little bit above, halfway higher up. He could see lights flashing. They said he saw where the shooter was. So yeah. I can tell, and i know this is traumatic. Im sure you are still in quite a bit of shock, but have you been able to wrap your brain around you went to a concert of all things, and this sounds like a terrible movie . I saw jason in San Bernardino, and he is amazing and my husband surprised me. We didnt go the first two days and he said, lets go see jason and it was a wonderful surprise, and to have this happen, you know, i just i just cant wrap my mind around it like you said. Its just hard. Jason posted a facebook message to all those fans like yourself who were there to see him, and we spoke with another performer who was on stage right before him, jake owen, who had seen children in the crowds sitting on their parents shoulders. Did you get a sense of how many children were at the concert . We know it was around 10 00 p. M. , but clearly they are music fans in all ages and parents bring them to these kind of concerts. Jason is just a great all around singer and he is such a good guy and he has two daughters himself, and his wife is expecting a baby in a couple of months, and everybody he is so wholesome, and Everybody Loves him. There were kids there, and one lady was just screaming and going, i cant find my daughter. I cant find my daughter, and i dont know if she found her or made it or anything. It was just chaos. It was just where crazy. When we talked to jake owen earlier today, he said he hopes that people will still continue. That he is going to get back on stage and perform and he hopes anybody who was at the concert will continue to do so, and we wont let a coward as he says, change our way of life. How are you feeling about that . Oh, no. Ill still go. Of course, ill go. Ill be a little more on guard, but you cant foresee Something Like this or expect this. Ill go again, and im sure we love and support our country artists. Especially jason. It sounds like your husband was a hero as well very having a peace of mind and recognizing those firecrackers were, in fact, gunshots and we wish him the best of recovery from the shrapn shrapnel wounds. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate pitch. The president has been briefed on this. Margaret brennan is at the white house. The president has released his first tweet about the shooting.
