KYW CBS Evening News With Jeff Glor December 20, 2017

Teach them acceptance for everybody. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor good evening. President trump got what he wanted most for christmas. Congress today approved a 1. 5 trillion package of tax cuts, part of the biggest overhaul of the tack code in 31 years. It also cuts out major part of obamacare, ending the requirement that most americans buy Health Insurance or pay a fine. This is the president s biggest legislative victory, achieved without a democratic vote, an he called republicans to the white house to celebrate. Major garrett was there. This will indeed be a very big day when people look back at our country. Reporter President Trump and fellow republicans celebrated on the south lawn an promised the tax cuts will unleash economic growth. It means jobs. Jobs, jobs, jobs. Reporter the president showered praise on g. O. P. Leaders Mitch Mcconnell and paul ryan. Its always a lot of fun when you win. If you work hard and lose, thats not acceptable. Reporter the president will sign the bill in the coming days. It reduces the concern rat tax rate from 35 to 21 , doubles the current standard deduction for individuals and families, and doubles the child tax credit. Taxpayers will see the effects in februarys paycheck. Congressional republicans who met the president s christmas deadline for passage served up fawning praise for mr. Trump. But for your leadership, we would not be here today. Youre living up to everything i thought you would. Reporter something this profound could not have been done without exquisite president ial leadership. Reporter no democrat voted for the bill. Party leaders Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi said republican promises went unfulfilled. They were going to reduce the brackets. They did not. Reporter for the president , todays ceremony capped a year of accomplishment. Neil gorsuch on the supreme court. The qualifications of judge gorsuch are beyond dispute. Reporter fewer illegal crossings on the southern border, regaining territory from isis in iraq and syria, and eliminating regulation. But the president fell short on replacing the Affordable Care act. We all learned a lot. Reporter increasing infrastructure spend, and changing immigration laws. With his trademark zest for sue sue superlative, the president said hes just getting started. Its really going to be a very special period of time. Reporter republicans say these tax cuts are having an imimmediate impact. Late today two large banks, wells fargo, and third fifth announced theyre raising their minimum wage to 15 an hour. At t and come cast said they will be giving most of their employees a 1,000 bonus. Jeff . Glor major garrett, thank you very much. We turn now to John Dickerson, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of face the nation and nancy cordes, our chief congressional correspondent. John, let me start with you. Mr. Trump begins the 12th month of his presidency today. Put this year in context, if you would . Well, its a bit of a paradox. If you look on the one side, you have all of those achievements that major talked about that the president got, and here he got a big legislative achieve. At the end, which is really what he wanted, but for somebody who came into the office with his signature skill being marketing, all of those achieve. S have not paid off in popularity. His Approval Rating, the average is about 39 . This tax bill that hes been selling, the Approval Rating for that is below 30 . About ten points away from where the Affordable Care act was when president obama signed it. The Republican Party is less popular. And so he has gotten the achievement, but what has eluded him so far is the approval. Glor nancy, republicans wanted to hoe they can get Something Big done. What might come next . Reporter well, the president has talked a lot about infrastructure, but Congressional Republicans really want to take another run at healthcare, either shoring up individual Insurance Markets or chipping away at more of obamacare. Welfare reform is another big g. O. P. Priority, reinstating work requirements for medicaid and food stamp recipient, and House Speaker paul ryan and a number of republicans want to go even further and reform medicare and social security, as well, but some of their colleagues think that could be radio active in a Midterm Election year, especially, jeff, since President Trump has promised not to touch entitlements. Glor john, talk about that image projected at the white house, that of a unified party. Is that the case right now . Well, it sure looks like it. Remember, a few weeks ago we were talking about, well, the race in alabama, which split the Republican Party, and then also youve had some senators, even those who are standing behind him today, smiling and applauding like senator corker, who have been openly critical of the president , suggested he may not be fit for the job. They are now all behind him. When you asked paul ryan about some of these controversies over the last several months, he would say, well, im not focused on that. Im focused on our agenda, and thats what you saw today. They were in the promiseland, all of them together. That locks the party in behind the president. It is not just a Republican Party thats President Trumps party, but its now a unified Republican Party by todays action. Glor John Dickerson and nancy cordes, thank you both very much. The baby developed from an embryo that was frozen 24 years ago. More than two decades later, along came tina gibson, who was struggling with infertility. She adopted the embryo, had it implanted, and gave birth last month to a healthy girl. Gibson and her husband named her emma. It is believed to be the longest gap between conception and birth since in vitro fertility treatments began. At the time i was only 25. Im like, im 25 years old. I was like, if this embryo would have been born when it was supposed to have been, you know, we could have been best friends. Its just a miracle. Were just so excited. Shes such a gift from god and, man, were just so blessed to have her. Glor remarkable. We are joined now by cbs news medical contributor tara naroula. What struck you about this case . Its a miracle and its validation of the science of i. V. F. The fact we were able to take an embryo frozen 4 years a 24 years ago and successfully implanted. Before we used to slowly freeze the embryo. We used to freeze them at earlier stages in development. Now we flash freeze them. We freeze them at older stages and we also use better protecttants, so this means the chances of the embryo vieferg are improved. 20 years ago the success may have been 80 . Now we can successfully thaw and implant about 99 of these embryos. Amazing where the technology has gone. The other issue is what about the hundreds of thousands of embryos that are unused by couples who undergo i. V. F. . It can be an agonizing decision for many families when the doctor says to them, what do you want to do . Do you want to thaw them and discard them, donate them to science, donate them to another family, or keep them frozen indefinitely . These snow babies, or babies in suspended animation can end up being a winwin for some families who have been struggling with infertility. Glor doctor, thanks very much. For her compassion and care. He spent decades fighting to give families a second chance. But to help others, they first had to protect themselves. I have afib. Even for a nurse, its complicated. And it puts me at higher risk of stroke. That would be devastating. I had to learn all i could to help protect myself. Once i got the facts, my doctor and i chose xarelto®. Xarelto®. To help keep me protected. Oncedaily xarelto®, a latestgeneration blood thinner. Significantly lowers the risk of stroke in people with afib not caused by a heart valve problem. It has similar effectiveness to warfarin. Xarelto® works differently. Warfarin interferes with at least 6 bloodclotting factors. Xarelto® is selective, targeting just one critical factor interacting with less of your bodys natural bloodclotting function. For afib patients wellmanaged on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® compares in reducing the risk of stroke. Dont stop taking xarelto® without talking to your doctor, as this may increase risk of stroke. While taking, you may bruise more easily, or take longer for bleeding to stop. It may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Xarelto® can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. If youve had spinal anesthesia, watch for back pain or any nerve or musclerelated signs or symptoms. Do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. And
