Transcripts For KYW CBS Evening News With Jeff Glor 20180208

The knee. Yeah. Reporter and youre running marathons. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor good evening. We begin tonight with a correction. That is whats happening in the markets. The dow plunged more than 1,000 points today, or 4. 15 . That puts its dow 10 below the high it hit last month. That is the textbook definition of a correction. Most of the drop came just since friday, nearly 9 . So what is behind this selloff . Here is cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Reporter the last half hour of trading today was brutal. A more than 430point plunge, capping off a terrible day on wall street. It all started last friday, when investors worried that news of higher wages would trigger inflation and prompt the Federal Reserve to increase shortterm Interest Rates faster than expected. Higher rates could lead to slower Economic Growth and make it harder for companies to earn money. And this week, theres been a new concern bigers have been forced to unwind a bet that markets would remain calm until until this recent selling started, bigmarket swings had been rare over the past two years. In november, the vix, which measures anticipated ups and downs in the s p 500, had fallen to alltime lows. Many of the bestperforming stocks over the last year have struggled recently, including technology companies, banks, and health care. Glor and jill joins us now. So volatility is the word they excuse we use here. How long do you think all of this continues for . You know, its totally unknowable. It could be days, it would be weeks, it would be months. What i really want to stress is buckle up. Its going to be bumpy. Glor people always make the point the economy is not market and the market is not the economy. That said, does whats happening then have some sort of an impact on whats happening economically . Because, otherwise, it looks positive. Right, and we are in a good place. But i would point out if the selling continues, if not just a correction, we get to a bear market, that could erode confidence, both on the consumer level perhaps, more importantly, with companies. Its very important that we see companies kind of stand up to this. If they do, well be okay. But the reality is without that confidence, they wont hire, they wont spend money, and we need them to do that. We need consumers to do that as well. Glor all right, jill, thank you very much. There is more shutdown drama on capitol hill tonight. Republican senator rand paul of kentucky is holding up a vote on a bill to fund the government as a midnight deadline approaches. We get the latest on this now from chief Congressional Correspondent nancy cordes. I mean, what are we not going to rebuild houston . Were not going to rebuild florida . Reporter with time running out, House Speaker paul ryan is making the case to his own conservatives on a bipartisan deal that contains 90 billion in Disaster Relief and a big boost to defense funding. How do you go to a military installation if you vote no . Reporter but fiscal hawks in the House Freedom caucus are balking at the deals new domestic spending, which they say adds to the swamp instead of drank it. Even drunk sailors never spent money this recklessly. Reporter the g. O. P. Defections are forcing Republican Leaders to Court Democratic votes, but there, too, they have a problem. Give us a chance to have it a vote on the floor. Reporter Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi commandeered the house floor for a recordbreaking eight hours yesterday, refusing to vote yes without a promise from the speaker on moderate legislation to protect the socalled dreamers. applause nancy nancy reporter but ryan will only commit to immigration legislation that is backed by President Trump. The president is known to change his mind from time to time. So why not allow a vote on a bipartisan plan, and then see if hell support it . Look, i want to make sure that we get it done right the first time. I dont want to just risk a veto. I want to actually get it done the first time. And i think we can get there. Reporter President Trump does support this spending deal, and that should help with some wavering conservatives. The senate is expected to pass this sixweek stopgap spending bill tonight. The question is, jeff, will the house follow suit, and will it do so before that midnight deadline . Glor nancy cordes on capitol hill. Nancy, thank you. Staff secretary rob porter was back at the white house today, but just to collect his belongings. The man who manages the flow of important papers to and from the president resigned yesterday after two former wives accused him of abuse. Now the question is what did others at the white house know about porters capacity when . Heres Major Garrett. Rob porter has repeatedly denied these allegations and done so publicly. That doesnt change how serious and disturbing these allegations are. Reporter White House Deputy press secretary raj shah told reporters that chief of staff john kelly only became fully aware yesterday of staff secretary rob porters alleged history of abusing two exwives. I did talk to the president earlier today. He told me he was very saddened by these reports and by the information that he saw. Reporter but sources tell cbs news, the f. B. I. Informed white house officials in november about the Domestic Abuse allegations. Porters first wife accused him of kicking her. His second wife said porter grabbed her from a shower. Both alleged verbal abuse. Louisiana republican senator john kennedy you cannot beat the hell out of your spouse. It is illegal, and it is immoral. Reporter those allegations did not affect porters standing in the white house. In fact, his portfolio expanded. Porter helped draft the president s state of the Union Address last month, and had recently begun work on trade policy. Kelly initially praised poart as a man of true integrity and honor. He amended that statement late yesterday saying he was, shocked by the new allegations, but standing by his original comments. We all could have done better over the last few hours, the last few days, in dealing with this situation. Reporter porter has been dating White House Communications director hope hicks who helped draft kellys statement and others like it defending porter. Porter was responsible for all written material, much of it classified, given to the president. He was working without a permanent security clearance, stalledded bah the f. B. I. Flagged the accusations. The fact that this man operated fair year without a security clearance, i didnt understand that and still dont. Reporter the white house will not define what fully aware means regarding chief of staff kelly. Sources familiar with the clearance process tell us that the f. B. I. Report on porter would have been far more detailed than the news story that broke this week setting the scandal in motion, which means kelly could have known more, and he could have known more much sooner. Jeff. Glor Major Garrett at the white house, thank you. The flu is widespread in every state but hawaii and oregon. We have been highlighting places with the virus is hitting hardest. In arkansas, 125 people have died this season. That is more than six times the toll last year at this time. Omar villafranca is in little rock. Can we lift up . During the same week last year, only about 1,000 flurelated claims were paid. At this clinic in little rock, dr. Jay Douglas Holland is taking a different approach in dealing with the spike in flu cases. Even though his waiting room is empty. What are the symptoms . Reporter . He still treats five to 10 patients over the phone. I go through a pretty thorough history about fever, chills, headache, body ache and sore throat. Cough . If someone has all of those, i feel comfortable in treating them over the phone, and we are not charging for that. I love you reporter the heaths all got a flu shot to avoid spreading the virus and to protect their son, theyre asking the community to get their flu shot. Last year in arkansas, no children died from the flu, but so far this year, three children have been killed by want virus, which is why doctors are still urging people to get the flu shot. Jeff. Early in the crisis, the agency awarded a large contract to a businesswoman from atlanta to fly splooi millions of meals. But as David Begnaud reports, over a fraction were delivered. I think fema took a chance because they wanted the lowest bid. Reporter Tiffany Brown is the onewoman operator of Tribute Contracting in atlanta. She got a google alert about fema seeking bids to provide meals to puerto rican victims of hurricane maria. Last october, brown scored a 156 Million Contract to provide 30 million meals at a cost of 5. 10 each. She told me she was experienced with this work, and that as time got on as time went on, that she would be able to hire additional people to scale up. Reporter only 50,000 of the 30 million meals were delivered. Fema terminated her contract due to late delivery. Fema should have understood. Reporter fema picked brown after veth her, even though she had no experience working largescale disasters. Brown has had five previous government contracts terminated for not delivering required food and her inability to ship product. Ive had challenges in that area, particularly because im so young and being a woman in this world, in the Food Industry world. You pour the water in it and it heat up. Reporter right. One Government Agency put out a notice saying Browns Company could not work for them again, but that did not apply to fema. Democrats, like representative stacey plaskett, have criticized femas decision. The other agencies go so far as not just to stop the contract but to issue a systemwide warning saying that this is not a company to do business with. Then how could they have been prepared to do a 156 Million Contract with a oneperson operation . My biggest mistake was not asking for more help. Reporter so, miss browns been paid about 255,000.
