Were going to begin tonight in florida where six days after the parkland shooting, dozens of students are on their way to the State Capitol to protest gun violence. This afternoon, as the students rode a bus, the Florida House voted down a measure to consider a ban on assault weapons. Also today, four of the dead were laid to rest. In washington, the president moved to prevent conversion of legal rifles into machine guns. We begin here with adriana diaz on the road with the students heading to tallahassee. Adriana. Reporter jeff, were on our journey to tallahassee, and students have been spending their time on the bus talking about what they plan to say to lawmakers. Reporter 100 students from Stoneman Douglas high school boarded buses, taking their fight for gun reform to the states capitol, 450 miles away. Some students wrote lists of demands, including universal background checks, and a ban on militarygrade weapons. The passion was palpable. We will not rest until our voices are heard. We will not rest until people open their eyes and listen to us. Reporter as they were sitting on the bus, florida legislators voted down an attempt to revive a bill that would ban assault rifles. Students say theyre not deterred. Also, were not going to let that vote down stowps, we are never going to stop pushing, and if it was introduced once, it could be introduced again. Military academy at west point today. Some of the students attended funerals this morning, and say theyre fighting in the names of their friends. Whats your greatest hope is yoo my greatest hope is that we can be the last school shooting, we can be the change that this world has needed for a long time. Reporter when the buses roll in tonight, they will be greeted by local students. Tomorrow, theyll be split up into groups of 10 to meet with lawmakers. They say they know this will be a tough fight, and theyre still discussing exactly what to ask for, but they say the important thing is to be heard. Jeff. Glor all right, adriana diaz thank you very much on that bus. A new poll out today shows support for gun control has gone up in the wake of the florida shooting. A new quinnipiac poll finds twothirds of americans now support stricter gun laws. That is the highest it has been measured. It includes half of gun owners. Jim axelrod has more on this. You ready . Reporter plenzer gave up on the n. R. A. At five million members, roughly 7 of all u. S. Gun owners, but he didnt give up on the idea of finding common ground. Fing you were to ask any single american, gun owner or nongun owner, they want to make sure their families are safe and protect their families and they want to have safe communities to live in. You know, i always find theres far more agreement in this country on the gun issue than you could possibly imagine. But we never bother to ask the right questions first. Reporter former n. R. A. Lobbyist, richard feldman, now runs the independent firearm owners association. What are the right questions . Well, who here thinks its a good idea for violent, predatory felons, crazed, emotionally charged lunatics, and unsupervised juveniles to have access to guns . Reporter a gun rights advocate for more than 30 years, feldman thinks as long as their Second Amendment rights are protected, many of the 75 million american gun owners are actually open to some restriction. Ive always said that when people said, well, youre against gun control. I go, that depends. Im in favor of gun control laws that are intended to and in fact do keep guns out of those three identified groups hands. Reporter feldman is among those who believe the emotions in the wake of the parkland shooting will fade in terms of affecting public policy. By the way, those latest poll numbers from quinnipiac, also show 67 support for a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons. Glor jim axelrod tonight, thank you very much. Bianna golodryga talked to six people whose lives were touched by gun violence. Four of them own guns. Another is in the market for one. Toby clark survived the las vegas massacre. Reporter and your outlook on owning these types of weapons has not changed. No. Reporter when it comes to gun rights and maybe any sort of legislation, what is the limit for you . Im open to ideas to fix the problems that we have. I mean, nobodys perfect. I mean, we all make mistakes. Yes. But when, you know, people just want to ban something just because somebody did something wrong with it, i think thats not helping the issue at all. Reporter well. Reporter christine leinonen, who lost her son in the orlando pulse nightclub shooting believes a ban on assault weapons would help. I lost my son in a mass shooting, my only child. And hes only one of over 100 people that were killed within a couple of minutes, that were shot within a couple of minutes, 49 who died within a couple of minutes. But this white house has not imposed any new sanctions, even though in august the president signed legislation calling for just that. Jeff. Glor major, we mentioned at the top of the show, the president talked about bump stocks earlier today. You can tell bus that . Reporter yes, he ordered the Justice Department to develop a rule banning socalled bump stocks. A bump stock is a device that can allow a semiautomatic rifle to fire automatically.
