Lack of busing, not COVID-19 fears, keeping Elk Grove kids from in-person learning, parents say

It's been one week since middle school and high school students in the Elk Grove Unified School District were allowed to return to campus for a four-day-a-week in-person schedule. The return rate is between 20% to 30% for upper grades. Parents told KCRA 3 it's not COVID-19 concerns that are keeping their children home for the remainder of the school year. They said the district forced them to make that decision because they are not providing transportation for all students. The Elk Grove Unified School District said during the pandemic capacity on buses is limited. They are mandated to provide transportation for about 1,000 special education students, homeless youth, and foster youth. The remaining 4,000 general education students who typically rely on bus transportation won't be bused until likely the fall. School officials are asking for parents to be patient with them while they hire more bus drivers and make adjustments to the schedule. Parents who work full-time said a noon pick-up time from school doesn't work for them. "I know they are offering bus service to foster children and some other groups of children but I'm not sure why they are not offering it to people who are willing to pay for the bus service," parent Mandy Beatty said.Xanthi Soriano with the Elk Grove Unified School District said, "We are hopeful that next year, in the fall we will be able to provide those services again. We are just waiting to see if some of the guidelines are going to get relaxed regarding capacity." Another complaint parents have is that their students who have returned to campus are being told to log into Zoom, even though their teacher is right in front of them. The district said it is looking to balance the amount of time kids spend on the computer but point out that technology is here to stay. Students go on summer break at the end of May. When they return in July, the district said they will offer full-time in-person instruction for everyone.
