The Lafayette Parish School System's goal of getting fifth-graders back on elementary school campuses is nearly accomplished after five years of building expansions and policy changes to complete the districtwide realignment. With new classroom wings and expanded cafeterias, most elementary schools will be able to accommodate another grade level on campus this fall, leaving only one middle school with fifth-graders for the 2021-2022 school year. And that one will be tackled next. On Wednesday, the Lafayette Parish School Board approved a realignment that would keep fifth-graders at Broadmoor Elementary rather than sending them to one of several middle schools, beginning this fall.
