Lawless park in Vandalia open nightly next week for International Dark Sky Week

VANDALIA — T.K. Lawless County Park at 15122 Monkey Run St. will stay open until midnight for star gazing daily from Monday through Saturday next week and will host three talks to celebrate International Dark Sky Week.
The park has gained both state and national status as a dark-sky park, meaning that it has controlled light pollution enough to observe the night stars.
The star-gazing nights will depend on clear skies. Cancelations will be posted on the Facebook page for Lawless’s dark sky park and preserve.
The three talks, each at 7 p.m., will be inside of the park’s community room, where capacity will be limited to 20 people. It will be first come, first served, with face masks required. On Monday, local dark-sky advocate Robert Parrish will talk about light pollution. On Wednesday, Parrish will talk about basic wide field astrophotography (bring a camera, tripod and basic lens; long telephoto lenses aren’t recommended). On April 10, Melinda O'Malley of the Penn-Harris-Madison digital theater and planetarium will talk about basic astronomy.
