During that period, even East German government officials enjoyed watching West German TV at home and became despondent when they were assigned to Dresden. During the Cold War, East Germans set up their TV aerials facing west to get the West German TV signal. East German authorities tried to crack down on this practice but were unable to stem the public's voracious appetite for West German programs.
