Local officials are not ruling out a much wider lockdown. I could see this happening. It is a different situation compared to yesterday. Our mobile teams discovered some additional positive cases. 360,000 residents would be affected by a lockdown. There are also calls for extensive testing. The entire population has to be tested very quickly. There is no point in waiting a week for results, allowing the virus to spread. The outbreak has sent National Infection rates soaring. After cases declined dramatically in recent weeks, fears are growing that hotspots like these could have a wider impact. Phil a dw reporter has this update from the town. Here in the region, authorities are using targeted quarantine to avoid a regional lockdown. That is why residents on the side are free to come and go as they please while over here the y are living under total lockdown. They work for the slaughterhouse and now they are behind the fence with no entrance. Only police and Health Care Workers come and go. Health care are going doortodoor to try to test everyone for covid19. But society here was divided long before this fence went up. That is because a lot of the residents here, many from bulgaria and romania, have little to no contact with their german neighbors. This segregation could have contributed to the outbreak. That is because the workers are working 10 to 12 hours a day in a factory and coming back to the cramped living conditions. And now, the victim of an outbreak in the community, they are isolated more than ever. Political pressure to expand testing around the meatpacking plant seems to be growing. Simon i think it is. If there is a lockdown in the city, that could affect more than 350,000 people there. So that would be a massive step. That is what politicians there, local and regional, are looking into. They are carrying out Testing Programs and say they are going to react soon. We are seeing the r number, this key indicator that tells you roughly how quickly the disease is spreading. That has jumped up to 2. 88. That is the number in the last few days permit for a long time, it was in the safe zone well under one. That is an alarming signal. If it spreads outside, politicians may be tempted to look at the possibility of wider lockdowns. At the moment, regional targeted measures should have the desired effect.
