- ADVERTISEMENT - The changes to the city’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts come as fewer people are showing up to get the shots. Roughly 66% of the population over 12 has received either one- or two-shot versions of the vaccine. The city is hoping to vaccinate more of the population, particularly as cases tick up slightly and the delta variant of COVID-19—which is more potent and contagious—becomes more prevalent. The vaccination site at the Long Beach Convention Center opened in January and served as the central hub of efforts to inoculate as many people as possible. At one point this spring, so many people came for vaccinations that cars snaked in a line throughout the Downtown area.
