Currently, Lufkin Fire/EMS responds to calls for ambulance service anywhere in Angelina County. However, the report cited council members as saying that the decision was based upon lengthy response times, being unable to stage ambulances all over the county, a large volume of calls in the county that creates deficits in revenue, and reducing the availability of an ambulance if needed inside the city of Lufkin. When put to a vote, it passed unanimously. The report said that Angelina County can instead contract with ambulance services, or create emergency service districts to provide ambulance service.
