Lyall Anaquod asks for new trial or shorter sentence

Claiming errors were made by the judge who handled his trial, a man who shot toward police during a tense 10-hour standoff asked the province’s highest court for either a new trial or, failing that, a shorter sentence.
Lyall Marlin Anaquod received an eight-year prison term in December 2019, several months after Regina Provincial Court Judge Dennis Fenwick found him guilty of multiple offences related to the Oct. 23, 2017 incident — among them, discharging a firearm while reckless as to the life or safety of others, pointing a firearm at a police officer, threatening to kill officers, possession of a firearm for a dangerous purposes and possession of firearms and ammunition contrary to court orders.
