Man jogging around Hamilton's Lake Rotoroa clubbed, stomped in anti-Asian hate crime

A man taking a mid-morning jog around Lake Rotoroa one Sunday was unexpectedly set upon, beaten and stomped in a random and apparently racially motivated attack (stock image).
A man jogging around Lake Rotoroa in central Hamilton was set upon by a complete stranger who stomped and clubbed him with a large wooden stake – for no other apparent reason than he happened to be Asian.
Hamilton man Robert Kepa, 49, was jailed for two years and 11 months when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday on a charge of injuring with intent to injure, which Judge Glen Marshall agreed must have been a racial hate crime.
