Article content Today, Prince Edward County is noted for its many outstanding restaurants and cafes, but 75 years ago there was just one, Bloomfield’s Maple Inn. Bloomfield -The Story of a Village, a book compiled by Barbara Fisher, states that this famous dining establishment opened in a village farmhouse built circa 1810, on Easter Sunday, 1944. Its proprietor, George Channell, a former Bloomfield cheese maker, had always enjoyed cooking. His skills as a chef soon began to draw patrons from as far away as Toronto and Montreal. Fisher notes that, in the 1970’s, Prince Andrew (the Duke of York), who was attending school at Lakefield, dined there.
