More Traditional Festivals Cancelled for Second Consecutive Year
More traditional festivals around Kyushu are announcing cancellations due to the pandemic. The three-day event of Tobata Gion Oyamagasa (Kitakyushu City/ UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage) announced the cancelation of its highlight, “Pyramids of Light,” for 2021. The 300-year-old Hita Gion Festival (Hita City, Oita/ UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage) decided not to hold
yamaboko junko in July. Nagasaki Kunchi (Nagasaki City, Nagasaki/ Japan’s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset) announced cancellations of the dedication of dance and the procession scheduled in October 2021.
