Israelhamas war. The deadly blast and a hospital in gaza Killing Hundreds of people. Then, that race for the gavel now entering its third week as jim jordan fails to win the speaker on the first ballot. And the rampant spread of misinformation online about the israelhamas war. We are going to separate fact from fiction with two experts as the 11th hour gets underway on this tuesday night. Good evening, once again, im stephanie ruhle, live from msnbc corridors and new york city. President biden is on his with israel as we speak as the crisis and that middle aged appears to reach a Tipping Point. Bidens mission, to show support for israel and its war with hamas and price for eight with gaza. Now in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. Just hours ahead, of bidens live in d. C. , a powerful explosion rocked a hospital and gaza, Killing Hundreds of people. Officials in gaza and in israel have blamed one another for the blast. That has inflamed already high tensions across the region. Nbcs Richard Engel has more. Palestinians called at a massacre and say and israeli air strike exploded at the Al Ahli Hospital and gaza city, where people were gaza health ministry, which is run by hamas, says hundreds are dead. Bodies seen lying in the ground, that wounded or rushed to another hospital and gaza city. Young children are among that missiles. The whole ceiling fell on top of. Us there are lots of children, very young children, whose bodies were laying on the floor. This could be a Tipping Point triggering rage across the arab world, just as the region is on the brink of a wider war. It is really quickly denied responsibility ends of the explosion was cold by Palestinian Rocket that was launched not by hamas but another Palestinian Militant Group in gaza. Many palestinians dont believe that. Protests in the west bank, jordans king calling it a heinous for crime and President Bidens impending visit is now in jeopardy. That letter of the Palestinian Authority, mahmoud abbas, moderate, left jordan, refusing to join President Biden for a peace summit in ahmaud with other arab leaders. At now that summit has been canceled. Inside gaza, hamas is under pressure. On monday, the top spokesman for the groups Military Wing claimed the group is willing to release an unspecified number of foreigners they took hostage during their attack in southern israel. Today, a senior hamas official told me that offer has expanded. We are ready to release all the civilians, including the foreigners. All of the civilians including the israeli civilians . Including the israelis. Im sorry, could i just clarify this. You set your willing to release all the civilians, including the israeli nationals, if there is including the israeli civilians and all the foreigners. And what are you asking for in order to do that . Do you want the asterisks to stop . Is that the condition . Stop the aggression. How can we, technically, logistically, it is impossible to do it. So our viewers might hear that and say this offer doesnt mean anything. That if you are not willing to carry it out, it doesnt mean anything. How . Well, if you stop the aggression, it can plea implemented in the next hour. Lets get right to my colleague, Alison Barber whos at the israel gaza border. It is just after a six a. M. Allison, thanks so much for being here. Talk to us about what youve seen overnight and the situation inside gaza right now. Stephanie, you might be able to hear a little bit of what sounds like a drone circling overhead. Throughout the night, with terrifically heard the sound of military aircrafts, Military Helicopters and drones circling over this area. When we look back to the area behind me, which is part of gaza, you can see sometimes when something comes off inside of gaza, the glow of all range from where we are standing. We have not heard any overnight hours any sort of Artillery Bombardment from the israeli side into gaza. We havent heard anything, rockets wise, come in from this section of the border out of gaza into israel. Last night, in the overnight hours, we heard quite a bit of Artillery Bumper meant coming from the israeli side into gaza. That hasnt been the case. Tonight most of the discussions, that talks from Israeli Military to all of the different parties inside of gaza has been focused on what happened at that hospital in gaza city. There is a lot of finger pointing going on right now, and nbc news has not been able to independently verify who is responsible for the explosion at the hospital. But we do know hundreds of civilians have been killed. We have seen videos that have been given to our teams from people inside of gaza. Weve heard from people, but we witnessed it. And it is an absolutely horrific situation. One of the doctors who is working at another hospital and does that city, where they are treating a lot of the patients who have been sent over from the new Al Ahli Hospital where that explosion took place, they have described to us help that were already at the brink. They were already passed their capabilities. They dont have enough Breeze Orphans there. They say its already overcrowded, full of patients, and now they are treated so many people who are injured and is bombing. There are so many bodies, they say, they cannot keep up with the situation that has happened. Fear and what all the doctors working at that hospital told us, they feel, right, now like nowhere in gaza is safe. No hospital is safe because of what has happened tonight. There was a Press Conference earlier this morning, earlier tonight your time, a spokesperson for Israels Defense Forces said they are planning to brief President Biden on the evidence they say they have in terms of who carried out the attack on this hospital. Again, they are claiming it wasnt him. They are saying it was Islamic Jihad. Theyre saying they have Video Footage they plan to show the president , as well as audio recordings, they say, intelligence operations have collected that they claim show, and you can hear and, them Islamic Jihad saying something that indicates that were behind this or had something to do with this. As rosa clement put a rocket, or rockets, headed towards israel miss fareed and struck this hospital. Hamas, gazas military of health, Islamic Jihad pushing back on this. Saying, look at the video. This explosion, that way the bump felt, this had to be an aerial bombardment like the attacks weve seen is doing, saying we dont have the weapons or capability, it wasnt us, we do not know. Nbc news does not know who is responsible for this. But we know a lot of civilians lives have been lost and we know the idf plans to brief President Biden on this when he gets to israel. Stephanie . Maybe the most important point. We might not know who caused it, alison, but we certainly know who is suffering. Alison, thank you so much for being here tonight. Please stay safe where you are. I want to bring in our panel tonight. But and an msnbc contributor, ben rhodes is here. Former National Deputy security adviser for president about ten. And amna, i want to turn to you. First President Biden put out a statement saying he is saddened by the hospital explosion. Hes planning this trip, we knew about it yesterday before this horrific explosion. The trip was already high stick, stephanie. One of the president s men cold and making this trip was not only to show of the already, as he has continuously done over the past ten days with israel to say thes race u. S. Will stand by them in his were against hamas. But also to try to contain this conflict from expanding beyond the borders as already in. More broadly into the region. That was the reason for this jordan summit. Mason with that later off the Palestinian Authority and the king of egypt. That summit is now canceled. Those conversations will not happen. On this trip. Another part of this meeting is also to try to leverage some of that open, candid relationship of heard what has Officials Say that President Biden has with Prime Minister netanyahu. To say a lot more humanitarian aid in. People of gaza, the innocent civilians who are caught in this cross fire need food. They need water. They need access to electricity. They need access to humanitarian corridors, to actually evacuate some of the areas being hardest hit. Everyone we talked to inside gaza says there is nowhere that is safe right now. And also to try to press the israelis to do more to minimize civilian casualties. We know in that private conversation President Biden had with mr. Netanyahu last week, that was part of that message thats been delivered. And since, then thousands of palestinians have been killed including hundreds and hundreds of children. And so even in this fog of war, as we are trying, responsibly as journalists, to figure out what we can effectually say about who is behind this latest atrocious attack on this hospital, in many ways, im set to say this, we may not know and it may not matter. Because people who express propel us than in sentiment whove been watching, from largely across gaza whove seen innocent civilians already killed, likely wont believe any evidence that comes from israeli officials or from the u. S. , or from journalists right now. Because theyve already seen so many people killed. Because authorities in Hospital Facilities and ambulances and you and run shelters and schools that have been hit. So it is our job, i will say, to get to the bottom of. This to report what we know based on the facts. But in terms of the impact on the ground, this might be a Tipping Point. Ben, when President Biden announced his trip to israel, Antony Blinken had been to several countries in the region. He had just finished a seven hour session with netanyahu. This time last night, it felt like that was some progress. Because the hospital explosion, has a changed all that . I think what its done is its made and already risky trip that much riskier. Look, i think if you listen to tony blinken yesterday, he was clear that he had just been in these arab countries. And it was clear he was trying to message several things. One, getting humanitarian access and humanitarian supplies into the people of gaza. At the other, i think, was pretty clearly messages from arab leaders that they were concerned about what Public Opinion was doing in their countries. That there is a risk of an explosion, not just with hezbollah to the north or on the west bank from palestinians there whove been back and forth violence with the israeli settlers, but also in arab capitals and also risks potentially to u. S. Embassies. And i think that was a bit of the backdrop for the messaging from the white house so to emphasize. A big part of this trip is trying to secure that humanitarian access. I think this horrific event at the hospital, which i want to echo, we dont know what happened, but we do not want the reaction is going to be across the arab world. And Around The World. Further horror added and up more dire humanitarian circumstance. I think that makes it that much more tricky for the white house, i think it makes that much more important that theyre able to leave that meeting showing something really tangible and substantial on the humanitarian front. Not something symbolic but something that can significantly alleviate some of the suffering were seeing, whether its credible safe zones, whether its robust commitment to get humanitarian supplies in through the southern border. And frankly, honestly, i think what youre hearing there are going to have some hard questions about this great invasion. And just, how thats going to how it can to look. Like how expensive its going to. Be this is what does it looks like, now imagine what it could like in, if 100,000 israelis will just go in there. This is a really high stakes meeting. Its almost hard to think of a similar meeting the president of the u. S. Has had in such a huge situation and what is really an active war zone. Jeremy, how do you think this explosion changes things . First, i give President Biden tremendous credit for boldly killing anthony by an ally. Obviously tended after the worst atrocity against the jewish people since the holocaust. Hes been so resolute, some morally clear, for him to go to tel aviv, voter jerusalem, go meet with our war cabinet, set down, and Show Similarity is an important message. To bens point, the reaction on the arab straits as a critical factor at this hour. But why was there this arab reaction . For some reason, the news media ran out there and took the word, lock stock and barrel, of a Hamas Military Spokesperson before that was any evidence. At this hour, we dont know, the idf has put out a radar truck showing the missile flew right over the hospital. They also say there is a second in the set of Islamic Jihad fighters, talking about firing this rocket. So we dont have the evidence, at the point earlier, when i never know. But the feckless reported breathlessly, hamas no credibility they tortured angela hostages, that there was no airstrike. Your reporter gave a piece or she said there have been asked right for three hours . So were of the hostages . Nowhere to be found. I dont think you can christmas. This as a doctor situation. I credit the president were going, and hopefully there will be calm, humanitarian relief in south southern part of the council strip and the u. S. Will transmit a message of strength and privilege of israel. Lets stay on the Hostage Crisis, to jeremys point, hamas is not being truthful about the conditions in which they will release hostages, but one other president s Main Missions he is hoping to make some headway on this issue, what is he up against . Well look, hes up against, i dont even know the hamas official, i think its important to hear what they are saying. I dont know if that guy knows where the hostages are. Bear in mind, this is a chaotic situation in which there is a different command and control inside hamas. Hostages could be scattered across gaza, some in tunnels, some in places with civilians but i think what is clear is was in qatar, where there is hamas representation, a hamas office, one of the destinations for negotiating things like releases, same thing in egypt, another venue for those types of discussions. Look, i think unless there is a comprehensive ceasefire in some negotiation, the kind of full scale release of hostages i cannot foresee. But i think the u. S. May be pressing hard for limited releases, women, children, hamas, you obviously want to see hamas released some of the americans, for instance. I think trying to get anybody out that you can is really important. Further to the point at the bombardment and ground invasion, it gets harder the more their military operations in gaza to negotiate hostage releases, if they are intermingled with that sweep to sweep urban warfare fighting. I think the administration wants to get whoever they can out diplomatically, before an official grand a vision. Earlier today, my colleague lester holt spoke to the father of a 23yearold american man, who is currently being held hostage. I want to share a bit. How do you think he is doing . The question is not the strongest guy physically, but he has a very tough resilient, mental makeup, and i do pull strength from that. I keep saying to myself throughout the day, dont give up. I am so amazed by how strong his Family Members are. Amna nawaz, you are just in israel. What did people say about how the government is handing the Hostage Crisis . Its so interesting to hear that father speak there because i heard this message over and over again from folks on the ground, including the number of families whose loved ones have been taken hostage, one in particular, i will never forget, whose father was taken from the kibbutz. He was 81 years old, dependent on medication for his self. They have no idea if he is even still alive, but the resilience and strength shown by these families, with what they are entering, the unimaginable pain, it leaves you in awe. What is interesting on the ground right now in israel, just to the domestic political situation and some more support for this war, stephanie, is you have to remember the netanyahu government was very divisive leading up to that atrocious attack by hamas. So a lot of folks will say right now, we dont support this government necessarily. We dont support this Prime Minister, but we support them doing whatever they need to do to keep us safe. I spoke with one man, who is a veteran of a combat unit in the idf, who has gone out and protested the government. Hes pressed that state Israeli Occupation of palestinian territories, but he sent his son off toward, when he was caught up with his combat unit, because he knows that this is not sustainable, that israelis living under the threat of hamas, which is an organization that has vowed to end the state of israel, that it is not sustainable anymore. Its a different maremount for israelis. Amna nawaz, ben rhodes, jeremy bash, i wish we had more time. I could tal
