Do you support additional aid to you asked your question. Go away. Were not doing policy tonight. Any other questions . House republicans keeping it classy on capitol hill after they selected yet another nominee for speaker. Well explain how the new guy, mike johnson, won the nomination. Also it appears
Donald Trumps
former
Chief Of Staff
has flipped on him. Well go through new reporting on a possible
Immunity Deal
from mark meadows. Plus the latest from
The Middle East
where israel continues to launch air strikes from gaza after rejecting a ceasefire call from the
United Nations
. Good morning and welcome to
Way Too Early
on this wednesday, october 25th. Im jonathan lemire. And thanks for starting your day with us. We have a busy morning ahead, and lets begin here. Donald trumps final white house
Chief Of Staff
, mark meadows, has reportedly been granted immunity in the federal election interference case against the former president. Sources familiar with the matter are telling abc news that meadows has met with special counsel jack smiths team at least three times this year including once before a federal grand jury. In those
Conversations Meadows
reportedly shared in the weeks following a 2020 election, he told thenpresident trump multiple times that allegations of significant voter fraud were baseless. He also reportedly admitted to investigators trump was being, quote, dishonest when he falsely claimed that he won the election, which he did in a speech just hours after the polls closed. Despite allegedly saying those things
Behind Closed Doors
, meadows has repeatedly claimed in public that the election was stolen including in his 2021 memoir. But abc news is reporting that when speaking with investigators, the former
Chief Of Staff
conceded that even he doesnt believe some of the statements in his very own book. Meadows has reportedly been given immunity in the d. C. Case, he still faces racketeering charges in the
Georgia Election
Interference Probe
where he has pleaded not guilty. Now, nbc news has not confirmed abcs reporting about the plea deal, the
Immunity Deal
. In a statement to nbc, meadows attorney wrote this. I told abc that their story was largely inaccurate. People will have to judge for themselves the decision to run it anyway. We will have much more on this story throughout the show and all morning long. But we turn to the nations capitol now where the chaos continues in the battle for a new
House Speaker
. The house is scheduled to reconvene at noon eastern time with republican congressman mike johnson intending to seek a full floor vote after becoming his partys latest nominee for
House Speaker
last night. But it is very unclear if he has the 217 votes needed to win the gavel. The louisiana lawmaker was nominated just hours aft majority whip tom emmer of minnesota dropped out. Emmer had defeated johnson and several other candidates earlier in the day. But emmer then withdrew from the race just hours later when it became clear he didnt have enough support to win a floor vote. As for congressman johnson, hes the fourth nominee for speaker since
Kevin Mccarthys
ouster three weeks ago. He currently serves as the gop
Conference Vice
chair. Now, as far as emmers demice, well you can guess whos taken credit. Yep, former president donald trump. He said hes responsible. He took to social mia yesterday to attack emmer less than two hours after he became the
Speaker Nominee
calling the minnesota lawmaker, quote, a
Globalest Rino
and totally out of touch with republican voters. A source tells nbc news trumps message made it an uphill climb for emmer, so emmer simply dropped out of the speakers race moments after the former president posted that statement. Trump said his comments about emmer, quote, absolutely must have had an impact on emmers decision to pull out of the race for the gavel. Now, emmer did not vote to overturn the 2020 president ial
Election Results
, which is clearly the source of trumpsire. But we should note emmer did sign onto a brief supporting a texas lawsuit that would have invalidated the
Election Results
in four key state meanwhile, president joe bins white house weighed in last night releasing a statement that says, quote, its in the best interest of the country and
House Republicans
themselves to get their act together. Theyre not weighing in on any individual candidates. Meanwhile, former
Speaker Mccarthy
is circulating a plan that would reinstall himself to the houses top spot. According to three
Sources Mccarthy
would be voted in as speaker again while ohio congressman and staunch ally jim jordan would be made
Assistant Speaker
. A source tells nbc news the arrangement is similar to the one between former
Speaker Nancy Pelosi
and then
Assistant Speaker
Catherine Clark
during the last cones when democrats returned today the house. This new plan lacks key details such as how to enact it and whether it can gain rg traction. One gop lawmaker says, its, quote, more desperate. Mccarthy reportedly melted down in conference meetings yesterday because hes losing the ability to hand pick his successor. This lawmaker also told nbc that the former speaker had two outbursts
Behind Closed Doors
yesterday during nominating votes. The lawmaker added at one
Point Mccarthy
said to the room, quote, this isnt how you elect a speaker. Joining us now congressional reporter for the hill. The word mess is overused but frankly isnt adequate to describe what is happening here in the
House Republicans
. First, lets talk about what happened yesterday. Emmer is nominated, a few hours later hes out in part because of donald trump, so talk to us about the new guy, mike johnson. Hes the nominee, but seems like he doesnt really have the votes to come close. Tell us about him and his chances. Yeah, jonathan, yesterday was all over the map. Republicans had two
Speaker Nominees
in one day. And now were left with mike johnson, as you mentioned at the top hes currently the vicechairman of the
House Republican
conference. Hes a former chairman of the republican study committee, and his candidacy appears to have
House Republicans
as close as theyve been so far in this entire debacle to having a
Speaker Nominee
. Last night there was a
Role Call Vote
Behind Closed Doors
, and all members present voted for him except for three. They voted present. But theres a key wild card here, and its why its not clear yet mike johnson has the votes needed. That is of course a key wild card here heading into todays floor vote. And then you also have those three present votes, which is a also an
Open Question
whether or not theyll throw their support behind mike johnson. Republicans as close as theyve been so far, but something weve learned time and time again in this conference is nothing is clear until to votes are there on the house floor, so we cant yet say mike johnson will be the next speaker, but again hes the closest anyones been so far. Johnson not a name many i me of the
House Republican
conference. Hes also a former chairman of the republican study committee, which is skeg because thats the largest conservative group within the
House Republican
conference. Hessert of been a
Junior Member
of leadership, in that position as house gop vicechairman. Hes had that for the past four years. He won his second term unanimously just las year and a
Junior Member
, but before that he served in local politics,
State Politics
in louisiana, and he also had a stint as a constitutional lawyer and law professor, so he has that background. And one thing important to note when youre talking about mike johnson, he was a central figure to trumps efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He encouraged his colleagues to sign onto an amicus brief supporting a lawsuit in texas that would have overturned some results in key states. So that an important thing to note when you talk about mike johnson. And you played that clip at the top of the hour. He was asked about that yesterday. It should not be overstated he voted against certifying the election, and real quick, this mccarthy plan to reinstall himself as speaker, is there any traction there whatsoever . Not right now, no. As i mention the conference largely appears to be uniting behind mike johnson. Yesterday him getting majority support other than those three in the internal conference meeting. I will note that leading up to that final vote, mccarthy did get more than 30 votes on some of the roll call votes. There were is some people who voted for other and then it was revealed those were for mccarthy. He does not appear to have a clear path to the gavel. And again, republicans seem to be united behind mike johnson. Well see what happens at noon for the vote ifaries a vote. Busy day ahead. We turn now overseas as
Israel Prepareses

Ground Invasion
of gaza. The u. S. Is sharing the lessons it learned from its fight against the
Islamic State

with hamas. President biden, however, has not yet confirmed or denied that appearing to deflect the question on the matter. Are you encouraging israel to delay its

Philadelphia Phillies in
Game Seven Of The Nlcs Last Night to reach just the second
World Series In Franchise History and the first in more than two decades. The only other, 2001 they defeated the yankees. It was a back and forth game until the dbacks took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Trailing the philliess by one arizona tied it right there. In this next at bat he would steal second and then score on a go ahead hit from gabriel moreno. He finished for four two runs including a sack fly that added some insurance in the seventh. Continued his postseason hitting streak and helping him earn an nlc mvp. The diamondbacks hang on beating the phillies 42. Losing games both 6 and 7 at home. And now we hav an all wild card fall classic. The texasanrs will host the
Arizona Diamondbacks in game one of the world series friday night. Its been a wonderful year for baseball, the rule changes, tv ratings up, but should be good baseball all the same. Lets bring in meteorologist
Michelle Grossman now. Such a bummer for the phillies but this puts it in perspective. Were looking at a dangerous situation. Were looking at a storm that intensified 80
Miles Per Hour in just 10 hours. It intensified 150
Miles Per Hour in 12 hours. It was a
Tropical Storm just about 12 hours ago and made landfall about two hours ago with 165 mile per hour winds battering the coast in downtown acapulco. Were looking at life threatening storm surge and flooding as well. This is going to be tough because 165 mile per hour winds into a town that has 100 million people, the
National Hurricane center sort of described it as a nightmare scenario, and thats what were looking at over the next several hours. This is what were looking at right now still a category 4 storm at this hour. Winds at 130
Miles Per Hour. Were looking at destruction as we go through the next couple of hours. As it makes its way inland, its going to hit rough terrain. Were still looking at flooding rain, land slides. Also talking about the storm system in the middle of the country looking at storms in texas and oklahoma, flooding rains over the next several days along a cold front. On the cold side of this system were looking at snow and snow from the
Mountain West and northern plains. Were going to continue to talk about it tomorrow as well, a line of storms. And could be gusty at times especially in texas and oklahoma. And could see hail as well and lots of rain from
Southern Plains tuesday the great lakes. Where you see the darker colors the heaviest rain but
The Big Story is acapulco and well watch it over the next several hours. Michelle grossman, thank you so much. Still ahead here on

Way Too Early. It is 5 30 a. M. On the east coast, 2 30 out west on this wednesday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. Jenna ellis is now the third
Trump Associated lawyer and fourth codefendant overall to take a plea deal in the
Georgia Election interference case. In the case of attempting to erase challenges to the election in the
United States including georgia i failed today do my due diligence. If i knew then what i know now i would have declined to represent donald trump in these election challenges. Ive taken responsibility all ready and now take responsibility before this court and apologize to the people of georgia. Ellis pleaded guilty yesterday morning to one count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. Her deal requires she serve five years of probation as well as testify at the trials of the other codefendants. Ellis plea deal comes just day after lawyer
Kenneth Chesebro and
Sidney Powell made the exact same decision. Ellis was former president trumps senior
Legal Advisor from 2019 through the end of his term in january 2021. She was an integral part of the legal team that advised him as he fought the 2020
Election Results. As part of her plea deal shell need to provide documents and evidence to the legal team. Shed publicly broken from trump in recent months. This deal was widely expected. Joining us now is contributor
Barbara Mcquade. Were so glad youre here. Jenna tell s along with
Sidney Powell the two most
Prominent Group
Of Codefendants who have accepted a deal so far. What do you think shell be able to tell prosecutors, and do you anticipate there could be more deals in the days ahead . I do, jonathan. What were seeing now is this very common tactic that prosecutors use of using one defendant to sort of flip the next one up the chain. So we had scott hall who was involved with
Sidney Powell in that
Election Tampering Scheme in coffey county. She pleads guilty and he goes next. And weveot powell pleading guilty and that perhaps influences the decision of
Kenneth Chesebro. She traveled around the country with rudy giuliani. They went to arizona, to michigan, to georgia, pennsylvania and made false statements to the legislatures in those states to try to persuade them the election was fraudulent. I think she more than any other might be able to coerce giuliani into a guilty plea. Of course he hits very close to donald trump. Jenna ellis is not the only
Trump Loyalist who reportedly took a plea deal. We got news yesterday former
Chief Of Staff mark meadows reportedly accepted an
Immunity Deal in the federal case with the special counsel. If this is indeed confirmed and his lawyer is disputing it, how bad could this be for trump . This feels like a significant one. Yes, its important to distinguish what this is and isnt. An immunity isnt a plea deal. It says if you testify truthfully, well not use your statements geps you. Its called use immunity. Its what prosecutors typically use in the federal system. It doesnt mean youll be left off any charges, doesnt mean you have a plea deal. Although i will say it is often the
First Step Towards some sort of plea deal or some sort of non pros cushion agreement. But mark meadows certainly is a very, very valuable
Witness For The Prosecution as
Chief Of Staff, and according to reports and the testimony of others, he was always there. He was facilitating these meetings. He was arranging the phone calls. He was present during these meetings, and so he alone can testify about some of the conversations that he heard with donald trump, what he heard him say and do. He was the one going to him on january 6th and saying do you want to do something to stop all the violence thats going on at the capitol and hearing his response. So he can be a very, very valuable witness. If he got his truthful testimony, that is likely powerful evidence against donald trump. Well have more on that on morning joe. But one more for you, barbara. The new york civil fraud trial,
Michael Cohen made his long awaited appearance on the witness stand. Now, he has gone to jail for lying under oath, so do you think he came off as credible yesterday . Yeah, you know, its important to notice what the lawyers for the government did here. They didnt lead with him as their first witness. This is after weeks of testimony where the judge has had an opportunity to hear from other witnesses and see other documents. And so like many prosecutors what
Letitia James is doing here is using him to explain to narrate, to connect the dots but not building the entire case against him. I know people are fond of saying hes the star witness, but hes an important witness certainly because of his history with donald trump, but all hes doing is sort of connecting the dots of all the evidence that has already come into play. I think as a result because theyve used him skillfully in this way it will be effectivech. All right, coming up a lot of ground for us this morning. Former u. S. Attorney

United Nations is now calling for an immediate ceasefire in the gaza strip saying there have been clear violations of
International Humanitarian law. Yesterday the u. N. Secretarygeneral called for an end to the, quote,
Epic Suffering of the
Palestinian People. While he made sure to denounce hamas, he also criticized israel for occupying gaza. Israel was quick to reject these calls. It is important to also recognize the effects by hamas of what happened in a vacuum. The
Palestinian People have been subjected to 56 years of occupation. Theyve seen their lands steadily devolved by settlements and plagued by violence, their economies stifled, their people displaced, and their homes demolished. Their hope for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing. The grievances of the
Palestinian People cannot justify the attacks by hamas, and those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the
Palestinian People. It is not only israel right to destroy hamas, its our duty. For israel, its a matter of survival. The free world should remember and never forget what happened on october 7th, today this barbaric will be israel, tomorrow it will be at everyones doorstep. At everyones doorstep. Joining us now
Senior Fellow at the
American Enterprise institute, dr. Leon aron, the author of a new book. And theres no question dr. Aron,
Vladimir Putin is one of the winners of the last few weeks here with the worlds attention now squarely focused on
The Middle East, far less about ukraine. Tell us a little about what hand, what role putin is potentially playing in all this . Whatshy trying to get st. . We see russia is one of the ones calling for a ceasefire between israel and hamas. Yes, of course. Putin is clearly winning from this crisis in at least three ways. It distracts america from ukraine. It divides the or in putins view it divides europe and the
United States. And it is likely to lead to a spike of oil, which is russias lifeblood. I dont think putin had an operational role in all this, but remember who is the major supplier of a vital tool in his war on ukraine, the drones, and thats iran. So putin never actually called the
Prime Minister of israel to give his condolences, but at least he didnt gloat. The problem is that his diplomatic path, diplomatic activity is now very narrowed because of his dependence on iran. So i think that we are seeing a different diplomatic path forward. There were some very good personal ties between putin and israeli leaders and between putin and the russian jews. All of that is beginning to change. So lets talk a little bit more about what were seeing here in putins approach to ukraine. It has been a brutal slog these last months of war, both sides not in. But does it seem to you that with this turmoil
The Middle East and with the u. S. President ial election on the horizon that putin is going to play the waiting game and try to hold out as long as he can. Absolutely. In ukraine, putin is counting on three things. Hes counting on
Demoralizing Ukraine and grinding down the ukrainian army. Hes counting on the russian economy and
Russian Society to hold on. And most of all, i think hes counting on the socalled ukraine fatigue in the west. That is the idea that the west, the nato,
United States, would eventually start pushing ukraine to making some kind of accommodation with russia. Those are the three things hes counting on. The current turmoil
The Middle East, as i said, is in his view a very nice distraction as far as the backers of ukraine are concerned. And he is trying to exploit it. All right. Senior fellow at the
American Enterprise institute dr. Leon aron. Thank you. And congrats again on the book. Up next here on

Trump does now, he is wedded to the teleprompter. He cant get off that teleprompter. Any time he does, he says things like dont vote. Hes telling people not to vote. Like we have all the votes we need many really . Wait a minute, you lost a popular vote to
Hillary Clinton in 2016. You dont have all the votes you need. So i think that it has just shown this is a different donald trump than 2015 and 16. Has a sense of entitlement. All this stuff. Doesnt think he has to go through and earn it like other candidates. Well, that was
Florida Governor ron desantis yesterday in new hampshire, attacking
Donald Trumps age and his cognitive abilities. Joining us fwhou a man with his cognitives in tact. So we have in recent days been cataloging trumps misstatements shaz we say of late. But lets be clear, polls show he is 40 to 50 points ahead of his closest opponent in the gop president ial primary. Do you think an argument like this from desantis makes one bit of difference . Nothing really has. And for a lot of people, if you tuned out of the primary after trump was indicted and did not dip in the polls, youre like a lot of republican voters. The decision to endorse and support somebody who seems he is under attack from the establishment, an argument that desantis validated, that froze the primary. Every argument has gone under that. Every argument about trumps electability is consumed by republicans belief that if he was not going to beat joe biden he would not be in such trouble. Polling has also found as reliable as it is at this point in the election, that ron desantis doesnt do any better against joe biden. They dont resonate with republican voters. A senior republican said to me in days that theres been this belief that if trumps in the nominee, hes in a courtroom next year, that would be really stunning to the american people, theyll break away. The independents wont want to side with him. Is there a possibility put him in court a lot this year therefore the shock value goes away and were desensitized to that . They have been trying to push into the next year, into a period frankly when they believe he might be president and could pardon himself. The campaign has just made use of the misfortunes that have come its way. Trump has been able to dominate the conversations in this primary by giving a few comments to reporters on the way into the courtroom. They dont want this to be happening right now. But, this is a unique primary. We not had a former president who won the last election, run for the nomination ever. So the base does not need primary voting does not need to see as much as donald trump it needs to see from the other candidates. They would love for him not to be in court. The status quo where he is in legal trouble but theyre pushing back with appeals is better for them than whats going on now. Theyll take whats going on now. Dave, lets switch to2023. An off year election. Gets a lot less attention, now less than two weeks away. There are a few key races here including a very close. Right. I was in mississippi for the last few days. And you have an incumbent governor republican tate reeves was bailed out by
Donald Trump Holding a rally in 2019. Has resided over just conservative policy wins that left some people in mississippi very unhappy, like not expanding medicaid. Brandon prezly is his opponent. He is the cousin, born a month before elvis died of
Elvis Presley from a
Different Branch of the family. Grew up very poor. Thats part of his argument here. He is running against a
Rich Country Club republican. He is what he calls himself a country democrat. And hes personally very socially conservative both by saying he believes life starts at conception, abortion being a settled issue in mississippi and run ads saying he doesnt support quote unquote gender surgery for minors, boys playing girls sports. He tried to neutralize is social issues and move the territory to a ill be a governor who expands medicaid and brings more benefits to the poor and kept a very close race. Theres disagreements which polling is accurate. All have reeds under water. Republicans had a very good election this month in louisiana. A lot of other stuff this year is more competitive than you think given the president s approval rating. You think people are dissatisfied with joe biden but also have concerns about
Republican Leadership in states which has gone in mississippi and few other places that are voting in november 3rd very far right since 2016. And concerns about
Republican Leadership or lack thereof in the building behind you. Politics reporter, dave, great to see you. Come back soon. Thank you. Thanks to all of you for getting up
