Police sources tell nbc news that 15 to 20 people have been killed and as many as 50 people wounded. The shootings at multiple locations including a Bowling Alley. Officials believe the shootings were the work of one shooter with an Assault Rifle beginning just before seven pm eastern. Enforcement brief reporters a little more than two hours ago, asking the public for help. Track and then A Person Of Interest, 40 year olds robert card. They also believe he has a Military Background and potentially a history of mental illness. They edited, he should be considered armed and dangerous. What we do know is that police and federal agents continue to search for this lone suspect robert card. Theyre calling him A Person Of Interest at this time. A white subaru which you show just a short while ago and he was not in it. So they continue the man hunt. There are at least two shots in locations, the Bowling Alley you mentioned and a bar. There are anywhere from 15 to 20 people killed, according to multiple Law Enforcement sources. They stress the numbers are fluid given the chaotic situation and the number of people rushed to area hospitals. That Bowling Alley, crowded with families, teenagers, children. The shooting happening around 6 56 pm. As the suspect just went in and began shooting. We do not know motive. Police are looking into whether this suspect, based on information they have developed, had a history of mental illness. He was a former firearms instructor, and he had served in the army reserve for up to 20 years. And that he had as early as this past summer, spent a couple of weeks in a Mental Institution complaining about having heard voices in his head, among other issues. That according to Police Bulletins that have been shared with multiple Law Enforcement agencies. We know, in addition to the local police in lewiston and maine state police, the fbi and atf, massachusetts authorities, all across the northeast, resources are flooding in. By air and ground. To try to track this suspects, who remains on the loose at this hour. Again, we do not know a motive. He was armed with an arstyle rifle, which you see in that photo there. And the man hunt is continuing as police try to get a grip on the number of, exact number of wounded. There was a News Conference by the Public Safety commissioner earlier in the evening. And he did not want to give exact numbers of the deceased or endured the cause it is just too chaotic situation, that Law Enforcement authorities have been dealing with. They have been reunited with families and taken for counseling and to give descriptions and witness statements from those who witnessed this Mass Shooting. Not just in lewiston, maine, but massachusetts and all over who are trying to help local authorities find the gunman. Find robert card. But jonathan, its been seven hours since this incident happened. And there is still no one in custody. Is that surprising to you . Its not surprising. Its a little more in the dark of night. Weve seen the escaped prisoner that took days. This is a real area for the most part. Yes, lewiston, is a city but a short distance of what you have woods and the chorus been found. Who knows if hes on foot. He has military training. If he knows how to hide out, whether he has found another vehicle to get away in and it could be hours away, its really unclear at this hour. So it isnt surprising . No. This is really hard work, especially when youre dealing with a gunman who may be trained with Military Experience and that is why they advised members of the community to shelter in place. Lewiston, maine and the surrounding areas, youve got colleges like Bates College right nearby. You have open Middle School thats being used as a Reunification Center for families and those who are outs at these two locations, where the shooting happened. Those were able to get out safely and get reenter their families. Or for those not yet heard from a loved one, theyre being told to go to that Middle School as well to learn information and we heard from one of the mirror in the Press Conference that some of them vacations to families have begun. So the tragic news, and soon will be learning the names and faces that go with the statistics of this terrible Mass Shooting. But again, there is no motive as to why the shootings took place. Mental illness, one possible ferry. Given the person of interest previous issues. That according to maines state police. And that Information Pinged with numerous Law Enforcement authorities and thats the best information we have at this hour. The manhunt continues, 15 to 20 dead. Those numbers could change. It could go higher. It took a lower. As they get clarity from the various hospitals, where patients were transferred to from investigations and the crime scene. What is the latest . The latest is were still trying to get more information from the police, they have given us very much. Yet the information coming in is very much fluid. So when youre talking about the body count, the number of injured, that could change at any moment. We know from past tragedies like this one, across the country, that you could hear what number one time, 15 minutes later here a completely different number. We heard from very Androscoggin County sheriff a couple of hours ago, saying he confirmed 22 people were dead. However, now that number is changing a little bit. Were hearing 16. But it sounds like it might be more than that. Unfortunately, we havent been able to confirm that number yet. Whatever the number is, it is too much to bear for the community and for those families. Have you spoken to witnesses or families of victims . I have to personally. We have many of our reporters, editors out on the field. Even now, its just after one a in here. And they went to that Reunification Center at the Middle School and many families have already been reunified from the various sites we have going on right now. But there are still many that are not reunited yet. So there are still waiting to hear. Many of the families that were there, we had a reporter there. They didnt want to talk to us, which we 100 understand. This is hard on our whole town and everyone is really scared. Especially since this guy hasnt been caught yet. I was about to say, marla, i can hear it in your voice. I can hear it. I think everyone can hear the emotion and our with you as you are grieving but also doing your job. What cant you tell us, merola, about the community in the bar, in the Bowling Alley, or all of this happens . So, lewiston is a medium sized city in our state. Portland is the largest city. Lewiston i think is the second largest city. s and its a pretty tightknit community. We have experienced crime here. Its been a struggle with the Opioid Crisis here. There is an ongoing struggle with Mental Health here. But this is one of those communities were everyone says, no, its not gonna happen here. Maine is a very well armed state. Ive got to bring that up, too. With very open laws concerning firearms here compared to other states. So a lot of people feel very safe living here. So what you hear people talk about, its not gonna happen here, it can happen anywhere. You dont know when its coming, and i think everyones on edge. I took a break about an hour ago, just to find something to eat. Everything is closed, of course, because we have basically lockdown orders, stay in place orders. Very Little People on the street right now. I saw Police Vehicles from multiple towns, Including Lewiston and auburn, right next door, and various other towns throughout the county. Everyone is helping each other, trying to get us through this. This really difficult time. And, merola, lowest, and as you well know, but the audience might not know, is home to baits college. Private Liberal Arts College there in lewiston. We were students elected you have been at the locations of the shootings tonight . Its hard to say. With College Students. I mean, the bar, they have got a lot of pool tables there. Its a restaurant. Its not unlikely that there was quite a few people there at that time. As for the Bowling Alley, something weve heard is that it was Youth Night Tonight at the Bowling Alley. So thats alarming and concerning about who the victims are. We are hearing from people connected with the paper, that some of the victims might be children. But again, none of its confirmed. All of this is unsubstantiated information at this point. And i hope that this but unfortunately as time goes by it seems increasingly likely. So this is going to hit our entire community. The entire surrounding area, because were talking multiple families across two different, two separate locations. I mean, everybody is going to know somebody who knows somebody. Marla, lewiston and lisbon are both on lockdown. How are residents get under information . I think various sources. These days, of lot of people go online and get their information from social media. And this day and age, thats where we get some information and tips. Which all, at least for maritime, point and to be confirmed by officials dealing with the situation. Police, ten officials, said era. So i think a lot of people are tuning in to our website. Weve had a dramatic increase in traffic from around the world to our website. Which, for a tight little town is pretty amazing. We have a lot of eyes around the world here tonight and on our paper necessarily, but our community. So i think people are looking to us for some direction about whats actually happening. So we are trying to be as accurate as possible and make sure the information were putting out is real. Because, like i mentioned earlier, you know. These types of situations are very fluid. So we have learned from past experiences, what might be said our one almost never is the same as our four. So. Yeah. One more question for you, marla, whats the size of the local police force . The available, nearby medical facilities . As far as the Lewiston Police force itself, its not a huge department. They have enough to cover the city fairly well. But they also have Mutual Aid Agreements with multiple towns, not just for police but also the Fire Department and that medical services, ams services. We have two hospitals, Central Maine Medical Center and saint marys medical center. Most of the victims, im aware, have gone to those two hospitals. I believe, some victims were taken to main medical center, which is in portland, the largest hospital in maine. And weve also heard that the raged out to boston for help. They sent hospitals helicopters and victims were taken to boston. Thats what weve been told. Marla, this is an incredibly hard not for you, for lewiston, for maine, and for the country. Jonathan, as you can see behind me, there are police who are currently blocking the Bowling Alley, which is that White Building gunfire. Its about a quarter mile down the road and about a mile and a half that white is one of the hospitals that marla was just talking about. I drove here from new hampshire. I dont hear about 15, 20 minutes ago. The streets are eerily quiet. As you know, there is a shelter in place here. People are staying at home. There is a couple of cars driving around, thats about it. It is a Nightmare Scenario for this town as marla was saying. Its one of those towns youve never expect Something Like this to happen. And it happened. And terrific. Im glad you mentioned. You just got. There you drive in from new hampshire. Im wondering, what was it like getting to lewiston tonight, given the lockdown. Given the shelter in place morning. It was a pretty quick drive, honestly. It was about two hours of the highway. And when i was driving in, there was one point we are the navigator wanted me to make that right turn and it was blocked off by a barricade. As we were getting closer to the bullet, ali worth a shooter went in around 6 30 pm. The first location the shooter went to. And as marla, was also, saying this was a bully alley heaven youth night, which as to the horror of this event. And as i was driving, and you see the barricades. There were a couple of ambulances passed me along the way, as i mentioned earlier. Theres a Hospital A Mile and a half on the road. But it is just, i cant emphasize enough how eerily quiet it is. Jim, the shooter has been on the loose for more than six hours. At this point, more than seven hours. What do you make of this . Well, he had a plan. A plan for Spree Killing at at least two locations and to be on the move throughout his murderous rampage. Hes able to do that. He was able to evade the initial responding Patrol Officers because that were responding to calls of gunshots at the polling elie and tavern. But he didnt stay around long. He shot the first one up and then to the second one. He left the second one and maybe was going to go somewhere else. We arent quite clear on what his cart was abandoned, jonathan.
