Reporter President Biden briefed today, Writing Jill and i are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless Gun Violence. The president ial candidates offered their condolences as they hit the Campaign Trail. Donald trump responded with a trutcial post. quote, these cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and arranged monster, end quote, and Vice President harris addressed the tragedy in New Hampshire earlier today. Watch this. Every day in our country, in the united states of america, that parents have to send their children to school, worried about whether or not their child would come home alive. Its senseless. Weve got to stop it and we have to end this epidemic of Gun Violence in our country once and for all. You know it doesnt have to be this way. Meanwhile, a new Nbc News Survey of Gen Z voters shows that 85 of voters under the age of 30 say they are somewhat or very concerned about the possibility of Gun Violence at schools or public spaces. So the question is, what re our lawmakers going to do about it . With that, lets get smarter with the help of O Leadoff Panel tonight, Evan Mcmorris Santoro is here, she the rubble joins us and democratic Texas State Senator roland gutierrez. He represents uvalde, where a School Shooting left 19 students and two teachers dead back in 2022. Senator, i hate having you on because every time youre here we know its for one reason. Its a new School Year and here we are again, students and teachers sheltering from Ther Ddly shooting from a teenager, a 14yearold, a freshman in High School. When you heard this report today, what went through your mi this was used three years ago, two years ago. Well, stephanie, all of this is just o sad and disgusting, quite frankly, that we Cant Figure this out in this nation. My heart goes out to those famili its so important that everybody across this country understand that Mason Schermerhorn and christian colon, those two teachers, they are not coming home. Thoe children. R School Day for the finality of death, people need to understand it because we have to do something about this in this country and to do this Means And Assault Weapons Ban. This weapon fires three times the speed of a nine millimeter and it causes incredible ma. I sued the State Of Texas to see the videos that happened in uvalde, texas, and it leaves very little semblance of the Human Body left when you get shot by one of these weapons. We have to do something now. Its my hope that people in this country understand this. Hugo, this awful, awful day, this Tragedy N puts the issue of Gun Violence Front And Center in the final stretch of campaigning. Often times one of these abot it for a few days, the News Cycle moves on but here we are less than 70 days from the race, from the election. Do you think this somehow nges the dynamics of the race . Will voters demand action from one or both of these candidates . I dont know the et to which its going to change the dynamics of the race but currently at the moment and what transpired on the Campaign Trail today, i thought it was very telling because it was really a split screen, in many ways. I was traveling with the Vice President today to New Hampshire when she delivered those remarks and she kind of spoke very common sense, i thought, the way she said it doesnt have to be this way and we can add new restrictions on firearms. And meanwhile, the Trump Campaign in response said as well, we dont even want to be talking about the politics, to me is kind of telling, having covered this campaign now for a while. Is usually a sign that they dont want to engage on the licy and i think the actual reason for that is because Th Policy is to oppose any new restrictions on Gun Rights, to oppose any rollbacks on curbing the proliferation of Assault Style weapons, which was the kind of weapon that was used today. They didnt want to draw attention to that. They made their position look week and i think when you look at that in a hole for voters its very apparent which side is for curbing guns and these sort of instances in allowing people to perpetrate real murders with these sorts of weapons. But policy is what millions of parents around the country are demanding tonight. Rents are too afraid to send their kids to School Tomorrow out of fear another student could walk in with an ar 15 style weapon. Evan, what do you think . Hugo is of couse right, this is the stakest divide the parties and really, really clear here. The republican party has had for a long time that the answer to Gun Violence is either more guns or just there really isnt much you can do about it, while democrats are trying to talk about the ideas of Assault Rifle bands and other types of Gun Legislation and safety measures. It just is so difficult in these moments to have it ever sort of breakthrough. It doesnt have to be difficult. Everything is difficult until you say no, im going to do something, im going to put myself out there and create change. What tVice President said today is quite interesting along those lines. We have a report coming out tomorrow unnoticed. Orlking about this issue, Gun Violence and Gun Safety Peope saying democrats should jump on this e on it because that hole that you mentioned, talking about young people and how worried they are about this, there are people who feel this issue has been kind of put on the Back Burner as democrats, is not their top issue. They obviously care about it, they talk about it a lot but not the number one thing and these experts told us they think there are moments where the democrats should be a little bit bolder on this issue because of Poll Numbers like that and becof how focused in this country we are about trying to do something about this. And as you mentiono Campaign Trail right now its only one candidate thats actually offering major solutions at the moment. Senator, after the Mass Shooting in uvalde, President Biden did sign the first major Gun Safety Legislation we had in our country in 30 years. Thats something. What do you think reasonably caproposd and can get done . You are in texas where things havent gotten done on a State Level even though it happened in your backyard. Nothing has happened in the State Of Texas, stephanie, but i do want to point out if you look at the point in florida after that horrible act that happened in florida, rick scott, than the governor, passed over 21 pieces of legislation including Red Flag Laws, including certain age limit requirements on these kinds of weapons. 75 of republican voters in texas want to see age limits on access to these types of weapons. I of course want to see an assault Weapons Ban i think the politicians throughout this country, when these things happen in their districts, they need to do what i did. I didnt want to go see dead kids, videos of dead kids. When you see a little girl with her face just gone, just obliterated, in such a horrific way, it changes everything that you believe in your life and it changes your focus entirely. If policymakers truly want to do the right thing here, they need to understand that this is not just another Mass Shooting. This iend of Two Little Boys lives, The End of two teachers lives, and all of this, all of this is avoidable. Every sheriff in parkland, in florida, rather, appreciates the fact that they have Red Flag Laws. If we had Red Flag Laws in georgia and i dont know if we do this might have been avoided about a year ago. And it was parkland students who fought for it. David hogg was a 17yearold high School Student in parkland, florida, and today he is one of the strongest, most outspoken Gun Safety advocates in this country. So change can happen. We do have to remind ourselves, though, Donald Trump, the last time we saw his statement on his Social Media platform, the last time we had a shooting, the aftermath of a shooting and i will, i want to share a of what Donald Trump said. Its a very terrible thing that happened and its just horrible to see that happening. Thats just horrible. So surprising to see here but we have to get over it. We have to move forward. We have to move forward. Hugo, no we dont. We dont have to get over it and move forward. We can do something about it. So who is that message for . Is that for hardcore Nra Flavored Repubs who are saying dont talk about it, look the other direction . Bcause the majority of the country is not looking to get over it and move on. Certainly nobody from those communities, certainly none of those families. I ththats right. The audience really is basically redmeat maga people and then his wider base because for them, they see Gun Rights as Something Inalenable and shouldnt be touched, and the Trump Campaign runs into this issue over and over again, which is they have policies which are unpopular in large parts of the Country Tht are very popular with certain sections of their base, and if you think about what trump is trying to do in this election, hes actually trying to turn out a Voting Block that didnt turn out for him in 2020 but did in 2016. Thats kind of young white men and young my when who are difficult to reach, who probably skew conservative and dont consume mainstream news. And to that demographic, the Trump Campaign has long believed the most conservative of policies and their positions on the second amendment are what is going to get them to go to the polls this year, and that has been their singular focus for months now. I think it also kind of ask Plains Lara Trump looks the way he does when trying to bridge this gap between fundamentally unpopular policies but also trying to appeal to a very, very narrow section of his base which he thinks will swing the election in his favor. Lets talk about young male white voters. They might like to play violent video games. They might be antiquote, Unquote Cultural Wokeness but i dont know, there is an awful lot of young white males who certainly dont want to go to School And Risk Gun Violence. What is he doing for them . Such a young whitmale voter, this is the big challenge the republicans have with this issue is it feels like were kind of in the Zombie Land when it coms to this because the nra doesnt have the pwer it used to have. The conversation has changed about this issue but the republican party has gotten more and more extreme on this. A superpower when lapierre once was, he is a Shriveled Up Old Man who is unemployed at this point with zero power, probably not even in his household. I dont know about that but this is a fascinating topic to cover. Ive covered so many and this is a horrible part of being a urnalt during this era is going to cover these and being a part of these conversations. And every time it goes the exact sy, whih is everybody says surely there is something we can do and someone says actually no, we really cant do anything at all and the republican party tends to go quiet on it. There have been moments, as the senator mentioned, where states have made changes and made political changes and those republicans havent been punished by their voters in those states. They didnt lose nch of national Support Or Anything Li Thatbut for some reason, when it comes to this issue on the national stage, E Gop specifically gets these very, e nervous about getting anywhere away from the idea of guns for anybody who wants them, whenever they can get them, thats the best way to solve this. Im not convinced thats a very helpful Message Forthem going forward but they seem to be sticking with it. Nervous like parents feel when they send their kids off to school. We are going to leave it there, gentlemen. Thanks for joining me tonight, evan and hugo. Roland, i said it before. I dont like seeing you but i appreciate your insight. Kamala harris just won a Kamala Harris just won a key ally in her fight for the white house. Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney said tonight that she will vote for harris in november. Cherry made the announcement during an appearance at Duke University earlier. Watch this. I dont believe that we have the luxury of writing in cpdidates names, particularly in swing states, and as a conservative, someone who believes in and cares about the constitn, i have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump oses, not only am i not voting for Donald Trump, but i will be voting for Kamala Harris. I want to bring in former democratic new York Congressman max rose. He is now a senior advisor to the vets, and Stuart Stevens is here, a veteran of the Mitt Romney and george w. Bush president ial campaigns. Hes now with the lincoln project. She didnt just say im voting against Donald Trump. She said im voting for Kamala Harris. What is your reaction . Do yothink shes going to have an impact on this race . I think shell have an impact and i hope one of the other impacts is that others will follow her. I really dont understand how if youre someone who has said what a lot of republicans have about Donald Trump, like a chris christie, how do you not endorse harris . I mean if you really believe that hes a threat to the country, one of these two people is going to be president of the united states. How do you say i really care about the country but im going to sit this one out . It just doesnt seem patriotic or any kind of Coherent Sinking or morals. So i think liz, who i admire greatly, ive worked with a lot back in the day, i think she will help here. Max, i spoke to a very senior former republican who said tonight, Liz Cheney just put herself on the right side of history but my question is, d
