Surrogates for both candidates gave new insight into their approach and expectations. She is a very focused and disciplined leader but it will take almost superhuman focus to deal with him in a debate and no ordinary propositions of the less we talk about him and the more we talk about you the better it will be for the Vice President. I think he does that by traveling around the country and takes talks to the voters taking questions from the press and every day is that for Donald Trump and he will go in gametime ready. Today we learn the Harris Walz Campaign Will Barn Storm Battleground States after the debate and thursday the Vice President will be in North Carolina while Tim Walz is in michigan and Friday Harris will head to pennsylvania while Tim Walz goes to michigan and wisconsin. Meanwhile new polling shows them neck in neck leading into the pivotal week and a likely poll of voters found trump leading harris 48 percent to 47 percent though it is the margin of error and also today former republican president ial candidate Nikki Haley making Clear Trump has a Campaign Lifeline if he wants one. Whatever he decides to do with his campaign, he will do that but when i called him in june and i told him i would support him and the team has talk to each other a little bit but there has not been and ask at and should he ask, we will see. Reporter i think there are two lanes the campaign is taking in terms of how it is preparing for the Vice President s debate with a former president. As you noted, we saw for a few Minutes Yesterday when she came out of the debate prep Session And Today the campaign is releasing a new ad which speaks to what we could see from the Vice President on stage Tuesday Night and in that ad we dont hear a lot of mention of former President Trump but its the Vice President talking about what she wants to do going forward for the american people and things to do to lower cost than things that she wants to do to create jobs and help small businesses as opposed to focusing on a message that revolves around former President Trump. We understand that is a key part of the debate she has been doing which is owning messaging and making sure she can weave in the Policy Ideas a story about who she is and where she comes from and you can hear more from our Campaign Managers talking about what the Vice President will do on the Debate Stage. She will show up and be Kamala Harris and talk about the things she feels are most important for the future of this country and those of the things impacting americans lives and they wont get into the Back And Forth and it wont be scripted. She has a message she wants to deliver. From the moment she got into the race, that has been the focus is making sure she is communicating to the voters who will decide this in the manner she feels is best at the top of the ticket. We know a focus for him Tuesday Night is going to be to try to define harris before she is able to do that for herself. We expect to hear him go after the Biden Harris Administration with the u. S. Withdrawal from afghanistan and specifically go after harris herself about in immigration at the border. Another topic he has brought up his Election Integrity heading into november and accusing the democrats of cheating before votes have been cast. Yesterday the former president said that if he is reelected he plans to imprison anyone that he suspects of interfering with the election this november or cheating including lawyers and election officials. In wisconsin he also brought up cheating yesterday before voters there saying that if the democrats, if they are able to stop them from cheating, he doesnt have to campaign anymore. But we have the lead. We have the people. We have to stop the cheating. If we stopped the cheating and we dont let them cheat, i dont even have to campaign anymore and we will win by so much. They did share a similar message where they said the main priority for the gop was to stop this cheating on the other side rather than increase the Voter Turnout and we expect this to continue as we get closer to the election. But it is the way you explain the last loss. Throughout his life, he is 78, and he doesnt turn new tricks and he is always refused to accept he ever did anything wrong or lost any contest. He explained every time he lost as somehow some conspiracy of cheating whether it be even a Popular Vote in 2016 or the Iowa Caucus against Ted Cruz or The Emmy Awards when the apprentice lost and he said that was rigged against him. Every time he loses it is because somebody else rigged the contest not because he lost but the directive is in fact that he lost the Popular Vote in 2016 and lost the popular and electoral votes in 2020 and lost numerous people he identified as his surrogates in various midterms and other elections and a lot of republicans are worried about that. I wish folks would look at the facts because there is a consequential nature for this upcoming debate. What are your expectations for it, and how much of a difference can it make for the better . We know what a disastrous debate can do . It is the most significant we have seen and changed the course of history and i dont think you should expect that every time you have a debate and most debates dont do that. They have a temporary effect and sometimes they go off course and elevate an underdog and that could happen here because there is a tight race and it is a tie race. Anything can happen. Even a marginal advantage to one or the other candidate can make a difference and we should not expect it to be as decisive as the last one necessarily but the onus is on the other side and on the side of Donald Trump to prove that he has the ability at age 78 to be president or as in the course of the last debate the onus is on President Biden at 81 and on the flipside for Vice President harris introducing herself to americans who dont know much about her and convince them that she is an acceptable alternative for those who dont want to vote for him but arent convinced she is the candidate they want. Natalie, you and your colleagues report in your article that they fear he will blow the debate and what are the most concerned that he will do or say . Certainly the expectation of trumps allies is that Vice President harris will try to get under his skin. She and her team of course want to see him react in a way that could be very offputting for people and they want to see him interrupt and get a soundbite in where hes says something that could be construed as sexist and he has commented before on the Vice President s racial identity so getting the focus and headlines of that debate to be about trump going on the attack against harris personally would be an Ideal Scenario for harris instead of getting a Donald Trump who walks on stage and declines to take the bait and focuses on policy and continues to hit her for the policies that the Biden Harris Administration have enacted with a number we saw at the debate in june with biden that despite biden doing all the things that trump for many months had criticized him for doing and not being there completely cognitively and trump largely didnt attack biden for those things during the debate but often on a little bit but it wasnt that he was Pummeling Biden for his age on the Debate Stage. It is unclear and still unknown which Donald Trump we could get at this debate. We could certainly expect him to be annoyed by potentially what the Vice President does. Yes. As you reported, Vice President harris has hunkered down in pittsburgh prepping for the debate and is there a concern about harris being too concerned about this Fiveday Focus . I think there is. Some sources have spoken to the team here with a concern that she could be over prepared and she has been here for several days now and still several more days of preparations that will be conducted. There have been Policy Briefing Books Part of the conversation and some of her closest advisors here working through some of the answers and questions and answers that could come up. There is concern that she may be over prepared with too many facts and figures but at the same time we have two things we could look at and one if you consider the speech he gave at the democratic convention, The One where she talked about ideas and policies she wanted to enact but that the same time talking about personal stories so weaving those two things together is something we know as part of the strategy but the secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg this morning said he debated then senator harris several years ago and participated in some Debate Preparations in the last president ial cycle and he expects the Vice President will show up as a prosecutor, somebody suggesting she would be somebody who both has facts and figures but also is able to tell a story that would be designed to convince as a Prosecutor And Jury but in the case of Somebody Running for president convince a Television Audience of people who could be undecided about who they want to support, a story they could articulate with those facts but convince them that she is the person they could follow. There are both sides of this where there is concern about over preparation but some thinking that it wont be a huge problem for somebody who is experienced with telling a story. Harris surrogates have been raising expectations for Donald Trump and Clinton Folks said Donald Trump is a skilled debater but is this thin . Yes. They think he is a Bully And Somebody who is a challenge for her to take on and no question about it and they dont want him to rush over her and it doesnt make him a skilled debater and he is a skilled performer i suppose but remember he performed so poorly, biden did and everybody assumes that he will do that and she is younger and more energetic and as natalie said there is an expectation that trump has the ability to self distract and all of that sets expectations unreasonably high so they are bringing it down again so it doesnt look like she loses if she simply holds her own. We can go Back And Forth how much undecided voters care about this and going after people with personal attacks but at the end of the day we have seen this for eight years from him and to some degree they have come to expect that from him and with Vice President harris there is a lot of unknowns and polling still shows that people arent totally sure what they make of her and whether they are ready to vote for her. The Trump Campaign is trying to get ahead and her team is trying to define her and depending on which clips resonate from this debate showing Vice President harris and it could make a big difference and i think she is The One investigating or lose in this. The Vice President has been preparing in pittsburgh with the team and taking it seriously because she understands the stakes and she wants to make sure every american, even those not watching but those tuning in close to the election understand that she wants to move the country forward and she wants economic progress and she is putting her own plan forward and continues to move the country forward versus Donald Trump and wants to take us backward and will raise costs for families and wants to enact national Sales Tax which could increase costs for families and, look, Donald Trump is not a bad debater and he beat President Biden in june and has done it several times on the national stage and she is taking this seriously but we are clear about these stakes. It is 28 percent of the public that says they need to learn more about Kamala Harris and only nine Percent Need to learn more about Donald Trump but thus far scripted interviews and conversations with surrogates but not as much from the candidates themselves. So will this present tuesday the right opportunity to answer those questions because she may be spending half the time deflecting lives from Donald Trump or exaggerations that i am glad you raised that because part of the challenge with debating Donald Trump is that he spews lies the entire time see you have a short amount of time to respond if you want to focus on responding about your goals or your priorities or do you want to do a Fact Check and sometimes the moderators dont do a good job moderating and we understand that is hard to do but she understands americans will be tuning in and they want to be able to walk away with a clear vision of her way forward. She will draw that contrast as she does against Donald Trump and prosecute the case against somebody who by the way is a convicted Felon And Wasnt that in 2020 and now he is and she will make it clear where she stands in the Selection And Fighting for families and Donald Trump is fighting for himself. You mentioned these legal vulnerabilities and you think Kamala Harris should attack him on nonpolicy issues and the things we have heard in the news . It isnt my role to say what she should and shouldnt do and she has a great team working with her. We have seen her in those committees when she was in the senate and she knows how to prosecute a case and i do have No Doubt that she will do an effective job of doing that as she continues to do this on the Campaign Trail but again this is an important moment for this campaign but also the next few weeks leading up to the Election Day are important and she will continue to talk through the case and make it clear to the american people that tragic 2025 will send us backward and make it clear that Donald Trump wants to enact a national Abortion Ban that will significantly harm reproductive freedoms. She will go out there and make this case which she has done so effectively so far and i have no reason to doubt that that wont continue as we go forward.
