Should not be telling a woman what to do with her body. She wouldnt even meet with netanyahu when he went to congress to make a very important speech. She refused to be there because she was at a Sorority Party of hers. She wanted to go to the Sorority Party. It is absolutely wellknown that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because theyre so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors. It is absolutely wellknown that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because theyre so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors. Thats just a small sample of what we saw Last Night in philadelphia in the first debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. We will bring you complete Coverage And Analysis of that monumental showdown. Good Morning And Welcome to Way Too Early on this wednesday, September 11th. We, of course, will keep in mind the somber events of that day more than two decades ago.
Im
jonathan lemire.
Thank you
for being with us today. And we begin with Last Nights first and possibly only president ial debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris with polls showing the 2024 race impossibly close. Harris and trump took to the stage in philadelphia Last Night and offered starkly contrasting visions for the future of the country when it comes to the issues of abortion, immigration, the economy,
foreign policy,
and more. Last Nights Debate opened with a question about the economy, which is top issue for many voters. Vice president harris argued that trumps plan boils down to Tax Breaks for americas wealthiest. So Donald Trump has no plan for you, and when you look at his economic plan, its all about Tax Breaks for the richest people. I am offering what i describe as an
opportunity economy,
and the best economist in our country if not the world have reviewed our relative plans for the future of america.
What goldman sachs
has said is that Donald Trumps plan would make the economy worse, mine would strengthen the economy. What the Wharton School has said is that Donald Trumps plan would actually explode the deficit. 16 nobel laureates have described his economic plan as something that would increase inflation and by the middle of next year would invite recession. You just have to look at where we are and where we stand
on the issues,
and id invite you to know that Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you. Look, i went to the Wharton School of finance, and many of those professors, the top professors think my plan is brilliant plan, its a great plan. Its a pln going to bring up our worth, our value as a country. Its going to make people want to be able to go and work and create jobs and create a lot of good, solid money for our country. Just to finish off, she doesnt have a plan. She copied
bidens plan,
and its like four sentences.
Like run,
spot, run. Four sentences that are just, oh, well try and lower taxes. She doesnt have a plan.
Take a look
at her plan. She doesnt have a plan. Theres so much to get to from Last Night. Here is one of the most important moments when former President Trump was asked if he had any regrets over his actions regarding the
January 6th capitol attack.
You just said a thing that isnt covered. Peacefully and pacheratesicly, and nobody on The Other Side was killed.
Ashley babbitt
was shot by an Out Of Control Police Officer that never should have shot her. Its a disgrace. But this group of people that have been treated so badly, i ask what about all the people pouring into our country and killed people, that she allowed deported . You were president and its a very simple question as we move toward another elication. Is there anything you regret about what you did on that day . I had nothing to do with that other than they had to make a speech. I said its going to be big. I went to Nancy Pelosi and the mayor of washington, d. C. And the mayor put it back in writing, as you know. I said, you know, this is going to be a very big rally or whatever you want to call it, and again it wasnt done by me, it was done by others. I said id like to give you 10,000 National Guard or soldiers. They rejected me.
Nancy pelosi
rejected me. I was at the capitol on January 6th. I was the Vice President elect, i was also an acting senator. I was there. And on that day, the President Of The United States incited a violent mob to attack our Nations Capitol, to desecrate our Nations Capitol on that day 140 Law Enforcement officers were injured and some died. And understand the former president has been indicted and impeached for exactly that reason. So for everyone watching who remembers what January 6th was, i say we dont have to go back. Lets not go back. Were not going back. Its time to turn the page. And if that was a bridge too far for you, well, there is a place in our campaign for you to stand for country, to stand for our democracy, to stand for Rule Of Law and to end the chaos. Another important moment came more than halfway through the debate when former President Trump was asked about his repeated false claims that he won the 2020 election. Heres his answer followed by the Vice President s response. In the past couple of weeks leading up to this debate you have said, quote, you lost by a whisker that, you, quote, didnt quite make it, that you came up a little bit short. Are you now acknowledging you lost in 2020 . I said it sarcastically. It was by oh, we lost by a whisker. It was said sarcastically. Theres so much growth, all you have to do is look at it. And they should have sent it back to the legislatures for approval. I got the most votes any sitting president has ever gotten. I was told if i got 63, which is what i got in 16, you cant be beaten. People should never be thinking about an election is fraudulent. We need two things, walls, and we have to have it. We have to have borders and we have to have good elections. Donald trump was fired by 81 Million people, so lets be clear about that. And clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that, but we cannot afford to have a President Of The United States who attempts, as he did in the past, to upend the will of the voters in a free and fair election. Lets be clear, this Debate Couldnt have gone more differently for democrats than The One in june in atlanta when President Biden was so faltering. Vice president harris got the best of trump many, many times over Last Night and got under his skin on a number of issues as we will show you throughout the morning. And certainly democrats feeling very good this morning about the state of this campaign, though still very, very close. Joining us now Politics Reporter at semafor, she was in philadelphia and at the debate Last Night. Lets start, with some of your general impressions particularly there in that key moment when trump once more refused to say that he lost four years ago. You know, when i talk to democrats one of the things they say is there was a missed opportunity there. He had an opportunity to change the page and to acknowledge defeat in the 2020 election. It could have brought him favor with some of those people, some of those independent voters or some republicans who are just tired of the rhetoric of denying the election. He didnt, and it could have costed him some votes. Certainly policy was at the center of a lot of the discussion Last Night, but part of its theater, part of if is performance. That Split Screen they were often in Last Night with the Vice President , made good use off that, sort of laughing at him. Can you believe this guy, reportedly saying its not true, and got under trumps skin a lot starting with her dig at his crowds and how they were smaller than they used to be and how they would lose interest and walk out during his speech. Talk to us more about what you see and how she provoked trump to lose his composure. Yeah. You know, a lot of democrats were very pleased with Kamala Harris performance Last Night. I mean i heard echoes of people saying that they were proud of her.
Veronica escobar
from texas told me she was very proud of the Vice President.
Jason crowe
said she was on it, and he was going to encourage an october another debate. I think, you know, to your point she did a really good job of taking him off like what he was supposed to accomplish, which was obviously to tie Kamala Harris with the biden administration. Tie her to, you know, inflation or rising Grocery Prices or rising
gas prices.
He didnt do that effectively, and that was probably yet another missed opportunity. And i think part of that was because, as you mention, she kind of got under his skin. There was several times that you could kind of anticipate her, you know you know, zeroing in on something, anticipating that he would respond in a certain way. And he took the bait every single time. You mention the possibility of another debate. One is not yet in the books, but in the moments after Last Night ended the Harris Team said, yes, wed love to do it again in october. Trump when asked in the Spin Room later was more noncommittal, so we shall see in the weeks ahead.
Thank you
so much for starting us off today. And coming up we have much, much more from last Nights Debate including the moment when former President Trump promoted a false claim about migrants in Ohio Abducting and eating pets. Also ahead, what happened right after the debate. Seismic here. Pop Superstar
Taylor swift

The former president , Donald Trump, repeated a false claim, which his campaign has promoted, that immigrants in springfield, ohio, were eating peoples pets. And look whats happening to the towns all over the united states. Its not going to be
aurora or springfield.
A lot of towns dont want to talk about because theyre so embarrassed by it. In springfield theyre eating the dogs, the people that came in, theyre eating the cats. Theyre eating theyre eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is whats happening in our country, and its a shame. I just want to clarify here you bring up springfield, ohio. And Abc News did reach out to the City Manager there. He told there had been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the
immigrant community.
Ive seen people on television let me say here the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food. Maybe he said that and maybe thats a good thing to say for a City Machlger im taking this from the City Manager the dog was eaten by the people that went there. Again, the springfield City Manager says theres no evidence of that.
Trump yelling
theyre eating the dogs might have been the single most viral moment from Last Night. We should also give credit to the moderators who did a good
job fact checking.
At one point later in the debate during a discussion over ukraine, trump launched into a tirade about president Joe Biden, compelling the Vice President to remind him who hes actually running against. Dont
kid yourself,
david, were playing with World War 3 and we have a president we dont even know if hes wheres our president . Just to clarify here they threw him out of the campaign like a dog. We have a president that doesnt know hes alive. Mr. President, your time is up. Just to clarify the question, do you believe its in the u. S. best interest for ukraine to win this war or not . I think its in the u. S. best interest to negotiate a deal because we have to stop all these Human Lives from being destroyed. I want to take this to Vice President. I want to get your thoughts on support for ukraine in this moment, but also as Commander In Chief if elected how would you deal with Vladimir Putin and how would it be any different from President Biden . First of all, its important to remind the former president youre not running against Joe Biden, youre running against me. More than once last Night Trump refused to say he wanted ukraine to win that war. So one person impressed with the Vice President Last Night was pop superstar, Taylor Swift. Swift took to instagram to officially endorse the Harriswalz Ticket shortly after the debate wrapped up along with a photo of her and one of her three cats, this one named
benjamin button.
The post read this way, ill be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 president ial election.
Im voting
for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes i believe need a warrior to champion them. She signed off, with
love and hope,
Taylor Swift, childless
cat lady.
Governor Tim Walz reacted to the post live Last Night on msnbc. I am incredibly grateful, first of all, to Taylor Swift. I say that also as a cat owner, a fellow
cat owner.
You heard it, we know that its there. That was eloquent, and it was clear. And thats the type of courage we need in america to stand up. If theres one celebrity whose endorsement might matter, its Taylor Swift. Next up here well take a Break And Switch to sports for a bit, and well show you a pair of Home Run records set Last Night in
major league baseball.

Ofg, Storm Surge is going to be a big issue with this as well with the main Surge Area where we have those warnings in place. We could be looking at surge anywhere from 5 to 10 feet, so a very dangerous situation, unfortunately, here over parts of the
gulf coast. Well certainly be watching that all day long. Next up here well turn back to last Nights Debate. Weve got a lot more to show you including the moment when Donald Trump said he didnt care about Kamala
Harris race despite previously questioning her background. Well be right back with more Way Too Early. Right back Wit
Way too early. Welcome back to Way Too Early. It is coming up on 5 30 a. M. Here on the
east coast, 2 30 out west on this
wednesday morning.
Im
jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. The topic of race in america also came up during last Nights Debate. Donald trump was questioned about a comment he made back in july in which he said that Vice President harris, quote, happened to turn black. The former president was then asked why he thinks its okay to weigh in on his opponents racial identity. I dont. And i dont care. I dont care what she is. I dont care. You make a big deal out of something. I couldnt care less. Whatever she wants to be is okay with me. But those were your words so im asking i dont know. All i can is i read where she was not black, that she put out. And ill say that. And then i read that she was black, and thats okay. Either one was okay with me. Thats up to her. Thats up to her. I mean, honestly, i think its a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president who has consistently over the course of his career attempted to use race to divide the american people. You know, i do believe that the vast majority of us know that we have so much more in common than what separates us, and we dont want this kind of approach that is just constantly trying to divide us and especially by race. And lets remember how Donald Trump started. He was a a he owned land, he owned buildings, and he was investigated because he refused to rent property to black families. Lets remember this is the same individual who took out a full Page Ad in The New York Times calling for the execution of five young black and latino boys who were innocent, the Central Park Five took out a full Page Ad calling for their execution. This is the same individual who spread birther lies about the first black President Of The United States. And i think the american people want better than that, want better than this. This is the most divisive presidency in the history of our country. Theres never been anything like it. Theyre destroying our country, and they come up with things like what she just said going back many, many years when a lot of people including Mayor Bloomberg agreed with me on the Central Park Five. They admitted, they said they pled guilty. And i said, well, if they pled guilty, they badly hurt the person, killed the person ultimately. Then they pled guilty, and then they pled were not guilty. This is person that has to stretch back 40, 50 years ago because Theres Nothing now. Joining us now moynihan public Scholar Fellow at the City College of new york, professor greer. Great to see you again. We know Donald Trump has made an effort during his campaign to win over black voters, latino voters yet questions the Vice President s racial identity. Your thoughts as to what you just heard. The same old, same old. I think Vice President harris really pointed that out throughout the course of the debate. This is what youll expect through a second
trump presidency, more hyperbolic Word Salad lies from a man who is quite divisive. And every accusation from Donald Trump is a confession. He consistently says the Bidenharris Administration is divisive especially in race, and it is he who has, you know, his own preconceived notions of who black people are, or as he calls them, the blacks. Or who immigrants are as what he said not just during his tenure of president , his Tenure Postpresidency and postJanuary 6th, but hes been on taj Last Night spreading lies and rumors and really egregious lies actually about what did not happen in springfield, hoe. It just goes to show the type of character were dealing with with Donald Trump, who has not changed. And we know many 78yearolds are not going to have a racial
agnuris s overnight, and he cheerily has not. We cannot underscore his comments about immigrants eating pets and certainly fueled a lot of what he said Last Night. Professor, lets get you to weigh in on a key moment early on and this is abortion, and this is where i feel harris knocked trump off his game a little bit. Trump when pressed really had a hard time pinning down a coherent answer on the issue but made sure again to take credit for overturning Roe V. Wade even as he falsely claimed most of the nation wanted the issue returned to the states. Right. So Donald Trump knows that hes on the wrong side of history when it comes to abortion. He knows the vast majority as Kamala Harris pointed out Last Night, a vast majority of americans want a woman to have Autonomy And Choice over her entire body. Donald trump, obviously, told whoppers Last Night about abortion after nine months. Which, john, please explain that to me. I have zero idea what that means. But we know this is an issue that affects families, and he refuses to give a straight answer. Even goes so far as saying i dont talk to j. D. Vance when its very clore the Trumpvance
Administration or ticket clearly wants to make sure women do not have
choice postnovember 5th. And again, there are no abortions conducted after nine months. We should note his efforts on
health care, he said, quote, he had concepts of a plan, no real policy there at all.
Professor greer, though, how much of an impact do you think Last Night had . Most acknowledged the Vice President won. The polls going into Last Night show how close this race is. What do you think the fallout from Last Night will be in the days and weeks ahead . I think well see a few things, jonathan. Oftentimes people dont tune into debates to change their minds. Obviously the June Debate with Joe Biden was a very specific and peculiar incident, and that one will go in the History Books and i think well be talking about that one for quite some time. But people dont really go into to sort of change teams, if you will. The few undecided voters who are out there, generally i researched race and immigration and elections. I genuinely dont understand how someone is undecided at this moment. There couldnt be a clear difference between these two candidates and their Policy Platforms and what they stand for and where they want to take the country. But Last Night, you know, we have someone who has done the job specifically as the executive, and Someone Else whos done the Job
Side by side with the executive and Kamala Harris was very clear, shes Vice President. Shes not president , so there are certain choices that Joe Biden has made that are beyond her purview. I think falling out from this obviously the Taylor Swift endorsement, you know, however you feel about celebrities endorsing candidates, that is a huge endorsement because we have seen younger voters lag in participation. So her putting her thumb on the scale and saying, listen, i did my own research. I waited, i did my research, i wanted to to watch the debate, i wanted to hear what they were saying, i did my own reading, and i have decided to go in this Direction And Support
harris and walz. And im urging you all to do the same, and im urging you to register to vote. Thats obviously not a great endorsement for Donald Trump because it came right after the debate which clearly said you lost, and you lost young people and people who want to go in a different direction. Yeah, The One Celebrity Endorsement that might just matter.
Christina greer, who we should accurately note Associate Professor of Political Science at
fordham university. Apologies for getting the
title wrong.
Thank you for talking to us this morning. Still ahead well go to cnbc for a early look whats driving Wall Street as investors await key economic data. Plus the united Kingdoms Economy sees no growth for the second month in a row. Well break down what that means and how that could impact the united states. Well be right back. At could im
unitedta stes. Well be right back. Did you know, sweat from stress is actually smellier than other kinds of sweat . Thats why i use secret clinical antiperspirant. It works on sweat from stress,
heat and activity. It provides 3x Stress Sweat protection. Secret works. [ ] welcome back. Time now for business, and for that lets bring in Cnbcs Silvia Amaro who joins us live from london. Good morning, silvia. Good to see you. So stock futures fell overnight as investors look towards the August Consumer Inflation Report due later this morning. That, of course, comes ahead of the federal reserves decisions on rates. What are economists expecting . Good morning, john. Indeed economists are suggesting that well see the annual Cpi Print dropping to 2. 6 from 2. 9 . But, of course, the question among investors is whether todays Cpi Release is actually going to bring clarity about how big that Rate Cut from the fed is going to be next week. The debate among investors has been very much focused on whether were going to see a 25 or a
50basis point cut. Lets see whether theyre going to get that
clarity today. But indeed, investors are on Edge Today as we are awaiting for that Cpi Release with futures suggesting it could be a lower start to the Trading Day on Wall Street. Yeah, some red on the board at the moment. So as we teased before the break there, the united Kingdom Economy unexpectedly failed to grow for a second consecutive month in july. Whats holding it back, and what could the fallout be for the united states . So, indeed, very disappointing numbers out of the u. K. This morning. The economy basically did not grow at all in the month of july. That had already been the case in the month of june. And, indeed, when you think about Gdp Expectations for the month of july, analysts were expecting as much as 0. 2 percentage points of growth. So that did not pan out. And one of the important events here were going to hear from the Bank Ofeland as well next week. Now, what the Stage Expectations suggest were not going to see further cuts for now, but, indeed, the Bank Of England will be in a position to tighten Monetary Policy further later this year. Lets see what they will communicate to the markets. And of course, that will be very important because it will happen just a day after the feds
rate decision, too. So lets see how these two economies will evolve in the coming months. But at this stage it does seem that theres a lot of pressure on the u. K. Economy, john. Cnbcs Silvia Amaro live from london, thaungz as always. Next up here well bring you more from last Nights President ial debate in philadelphia. Well play it for you, Kamala

Understand why the European Allies and our nato allies are so thankful that you are no longer president and that we understand the importance of the greatest Military Alliance the world has ever known, which is nato. And what we have done to preserve the ability of zelenskyy and the ukrainians to fight for their independence. Otherwise, putin would be sitting in kyiv with his eyes on the rest of europe starting with poland. And why dont you tell the 800,000 Polish Americans right here in pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch. That was another moment from last Nights President ial debate between Vice President harris and former President Trump. Joining us now to talk about it, Msnbc Contributor
mike barnacle. Mike, great to see you this morning. Yeah, that moment there i thought was striking. Not only did she say these dictators Hope Trump wins again and theyre laughing at him, the former military officials here in the united states dont want him to win again because they see hes a danger. And then trump himself offers a rebuttal saying Hes Wellthoughtof by
viktor orban. Not only did the Vice President successfully frame the differences in foreign policies, yet another moment she was able to get under his skin. It was an amazing night. I mean for the first time in Donald Trumps public life he was hammered and undressed from the start. I mean it was a scowl versus a smile from the beginning. It was someone who came out and was surprised by the handshake.
Kamala harris coming across the stage and shaking his hand, he looked surprised by it. He never looked at her during the course of the debate, something dehumanizing, but he never looked at her. He was actually, as the night wore on, he looked like an old man becoming part of our political past right before our very eyes. And he actually at one point he surrendered the presidency. When he was asked about January 6th and the riots in the capitol, his quote was and his answer was and this, quote, i wasnt responsible for security. He is the president or was the President Of The United States of america, and he wasnt responsible for the security. Those are his words. And she, of course, all night long just took the shingles off right of his roof including saying, you know, you were took right off of his roof, including saying, you know, you were fired by 81 Million people, fired by 81 people. The Split Screen is where she mocked him and laughed at him and made him seem so small. We have more thoughts from you on Morning Joe. It is the September 11th Anniversary Today the terror attacks. 23 years ago they feel like they were yesterday with a live shot here of Ground Zero and the
9 11 memorial in manhattan and we will have coverage throughout the morning. What are your thoughts on this sacred and somber day . Im happy to be in new York City on this day because, unlike rest of the country, September 11th lives each and every day of every year since 2001 here in new york and the suffering, the sacrifice are well remembered here in new york. And the rest of the country would do well to take a pause and not only think of what happened on September 11th but think of the resilience of the united states of america and in particular the resilience of new York City and the pride that new york take in what they did with their city and about their city after September 11th. Well said. Such a
desk day. Msnbc contributor

social media. America got to see tonight the leader ive. Proud to work alongside for three and a half years. Wasnt even close.
Vp harris proved shes the best choice to lead our nation forward. We are not going back. Joining us now is white House Reporter at the Washington Post Tyler page. Good to see you. It was striking to hear President Bidens words about there we are not going back. That is sort of one of key arguments from Vice President harris during this campaign as she tries to make herself the Change Candidate even though, of course, she is Vice President to the incumbent president. Both Trump And Harris are trying to tell americans i can present a different future for this country. How do you think they each did Last Night . Yeah. Both candidates are appealing to that idea of change because its clear that is what voters want and what the polls show over and over again. Both of them are burdened by different aspects of why that argument is hard to make. Obviously, as you said, Vice President harris is part of the biden administration and is both trying to latch on to some of the more popular parts of that legacy while distancing herself from some of it, too. Given that, bidens Approval Ratings were near some of his lowest as he dropped out of the race. Trump, of course, is not in office right now. But was president for four years and has dominated American Politics for almost a decade and is running on a more extreme agenda as he runs for another term in office and so both of them are trying to navigate this conundrum of trying to represent change in their own ways but also trying to pare attacks on their record. Most of their debate was focused on their record and time in the White House and i think each candidate succeeded at times but also struggled as they tried to navigate the realities of both being near the highest seat of power in the country. Trump had one good line Last Night where he basically im parafrasing suggesting to harris you have plans to make things better and why havent you done that in three and a half years in office . That came at The End of the debate. The Vice President got the better of him clearly on most exchanges but we saw polling going into the evening that a lot of americans wanted to know more about her and her policies. Do you think Last Night she was able to fill them . Yeah. I think at times particularly on the economy she didnt exactly answer the question the moderators asked her about whether americans are better are better off now than four years ago when trump was president but that answer, she really talked about her economic policies. Also on abortion and talking through her vision for how to respond to the Supreme Court overturn Roe V wade. I think youre right. This is something the harris aides wanted to introduce a biography but, more than anything, they wanted to cut a clear contrast between her and trump and i think they are very satisfied this morning as they are waking up about her ability to really get under trumps skin, throw him off course. I think that is one of the things that democrats were most frustrated about when you look back at the debate between Trump And
Biden in june is that biden really failed to land any substantive attacks on biden on trump. He was mostly on the defensive. And democrats and strategists were worried that the president was unable to effectively prosecute the case and draw contrast with trump and presenting that the americans with two choices, either him or a
return to trump. I think democrats waking up this morning are much happier about Harris Ability to use her prosecutorial skills and crystallize that contrast for the american people. She was clear getting under trumps crowds leaving early or less. Talk to us about what happens next . What is next for each of these candidates . Yeah. You know, harris is in new york and going to commemorate the anniversary of
9 11 and another
barnstorming tour. I think one of the challenges for harris she has a truncated
time line. We will see her barnstorming the country to the Battleground States and taking her case directly to the voters that will decide this election. We saw the head of the Harris Campaign saying Last Night they wanted a second debate between the two candidates. We will see whether or not they can agree on moving forward with that, but, you know, i think it will be interesting to see how trump responds. Oftentimes, we see him lash out when he is falling behind. We saw him show off in the Spin
Room and something he has not done for many years. We could expect to see the candidates clash again on the Debate Stage but they both will be traveling the country the last geks to win over
@type":"Organization
archive.org
@type":"ImageObject
800
600
//ia800102.us.archive.org/12/items/MSNBCW_20240911_090000_Way_Too_Early_With_Jonathan_Lemire/MSNBCW_20240911_090000_Way_Too_Early_With_Jonathan_Lemire.thumbs/MSNBCW_20240911_090000_Way_Too_Early_With_Jonathan_Lemire_000001.jpg
@type":"Organization
