Last Nights Debate was full of important and defining moments, almost every second of that debate slowed just an unbelievable contrast between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. So much so that she just has a moment to focus what is impossible. But f you had to pick one moment to show an undecided voter it might be, it might be this question to Donald Trump on the issue of Health Care. Nine years after you first started running do you have a plan and can you tell us what it is . Obama care was lousy Health Care. Always was, not very good Today Yes or no you still do not have a plan. I have concepts of a plan. Concepts of a plan. That is like when you ask a high School Student if they started their Book Report and they tell you, they have an idea of how they are going to write it. The difference between high Schooler And Trump of course is Donald Trump has been attacking the affordable Care Act for nearly a decade now. But he still has no idea what he wants to replace it with. A decade later. That alone is really something. Especially when you consider the Double Standard that has existed and still exists for these two candidates heading into last Nights Debate. For weeks these have been the headlines about harris. Harriss early campaign, heavy on buzz, Light On Policy. Harris has good vibes, time for good policies. Kamala Harris Campaign is Light On Policy but that helped her transform the race. Now, the reality is that since she entered the race about, i dont know, five minutes ago. Kamala harris laid out a series of Policy Proposals and speeches and on her website. Economic policies on Housing And Price gouging, Health Care policies on restoring reproductive freedom and lowering drug prices. Family policies, on affordable childcare. If that is the definition of Light On Policy then the Trump Campaign is, i dont know, what is less than 0 . Policy Page List vague Campaign Promises which are not policies, like end inflation. And seal the border. With no explanation as to how trump plans to accomplish any of it. In fact, the only detailed Policy Proposal trumps allies put forward is project 2025 and trump spent most of the Campaign Running from that plan. Here he was Last Night. As you know and as she knows better than anyone i have nothing to do with project 2025. That is sought there, i have not read it. I dont want to read it purposely. I will not read it. Going into this debate. It was on harris to deliver specifics, even though Donald Trump has spent much of the campaign just talking about sharks and the late great Hannibal Lecter who was never alive to begin with. As it turned out last Night Trump did not have the luxury of just glossing over what he might actually do if he becomes president again. And that led to a series of revealing moments like this question on abortion would you veto a national. I will not have to if i can get a yes or know. J. D. Vance said he would. I did not discuss it with j. D. In all fairness. He refused to say if he would veto it. A question he had to know was coming in this debate. It was the same thing on foreign policy. When trump was asked this question about which side he supports in a war in ukraine. I want to ask you a very simple question tonight, do you want ukraine to win this war . I want the war to stop. I want to save lives. Just to clarify on the question. Do you believe it is in the u. S. Best interest for ukraine to win the war, yes or know. I think it is in the u. S. s Best Interest to get it finished and just done. Harris spent the night on one hand baiting trump, while also letting people know where she stands on key issues. Here she is explaining her position on abortion. I absolutely support reinstating the protections of roe v. Wade and as you rightly mentioned nowhere in america is a woman, carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion. That is not happening t is insulting to the women of america. And understand what has been happening under Donald Trumps Abortion Bans. Couples that pray and dream of having a family are being denied ivf treatments. What is happening in our country. Harris responding to trump on ukraine and making a direct appeal to critical Swing State voters. If Donald Trump were president , putin would be sitting in kyiv right now. Why dont you tell the 800,000 Polish Americans right here in pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch. The choice between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris could not have been clearer. And now the question is, did Last Night have any impact on the voters who are going to decide this election . Especially those who said going into this debate that they wanted to hear more specifics from Kamala Harris . This debate may be the first and last time voters see these two Candidates Debate Side by side in a national forum. So, what do they think . Are you sure you going to vote for trump. Sure is a strong word. If i had to vote right now i would vote for trump. Okay. Harris if you had to vote today, raise your hand . And you just want to know more. I want to know more. And nicole is not going to vote for either who do you think won by a show of hand. Former president trump. Four, tentative. Two over there. What about Vice President harris . More hands is there anything that you heard here that you thought, oh, yeah, i can go for that policy . I can stand with that candidate . Not really, i think Kamala Harris had a good debate. More favorable to her than donald but i am still, still not sure. Not 100 . Joining me now are George Conway, Attorney And Staff writer for the atlantic. And Tim Alberta. George, let me start with you first, just about your impressions about this debate and the degree to which you think it really shaped the dynamics of the closing days of this election. I think it can not help it. Seeing trump saying the absurd things he was saying. There is just so much that he does that is a wall of words, random Water Fall of just verbage that, so many things that he said that are absurd. Not just the cats and the people eating cats in ohio allegedly. I mean he said that he was a leader in fertilization. What is that . What is hE Talking about there . It was just i just think the things that people, the campaign will be able to put together, other people can put together about all of the foolish things and the exagerated things and the things he was saying the more he was pressured the more hE Talked about how it is The End of the world if i am not elected and this will happen and it makes him look silly and if you stack it together and that is what people will remember, it is going to be brutal for him. I do wonder, tim, you know, it is not just trump who will have to answer for some of the things that he said Last Night, if it is siding with putin in the war in ukraine, maybe enacting national Abortion Ban there is stuff that any republican on a ticket in november is going to have to talk about. And your Magma Opis talking about formally skeptical members of the party. I sort of wonder, you know, as you tell the story of Mike Lee how that story, you know, changes or doesnt change based on a performance like The One Last Night from trump and just how difficult it is for those republicans who still have a conscious but have not disenvowed trump it is interesting. I talked to a number of people close to trump, close to the campaign and, you know, the way that they sort of play this off is, well, we are sort of back to where we were a year ago. Which is, it is a coin flip. It is going to come down to 100,000 voters spread across 12 counties in three or four states and that is that. If you compare that to where the Trump Campaign was three months ago which is they were, i think, pretty comfortably closing in on 320, 325 and democrats down the ballot in michigan, pennsylvania, arizona, georgia, elsewhere were in serious trouble. This feels like a new campaign. A tale of two campaigns. It is interesting that when we were in milwaukee this summer when really it felt like this was the high watermark for trump, for the republican party, they were all sort of on Cruise Control and on Cloud 9 feeling like this was turning into a Wave Election for them. You felt this unity. It was a party for the first time really in a decade felt entirely around Donald Trump, no reservations, it was all maga all of the time. What is interesting now, when you are dealing with this sort of reset that we are seeing specific to not just Last Night but specific to i would say the last two or three weeks of the campaign with the numbers leveling out and the Trump Campaign slowing signs of fatigue here. Some of those same republicans who felt really good a couple months ago and who were all on board they are not and more. And you can hear it in their voice. You can sense they recognize that even if trumps numbers dont suffer much or dont even suffer at all, look, we are living in a polarized electorate and it is realistic that the numbers stay where they are. But that is because of trumps perceived strengths and weaknesses baked into the minds of so many millions of voters but what about the down ballot republicans . Do they suffer as a result of this . That is the fear among a lot of republicans that trumps numbers will remain stable no matter what, but that among moderates and independents suffer when he has a performance like that. It seemed to me, george, that Kamala Harris was trying to embarrass trump but not just for democrats to rile them up and jonathan writes in the on the bull work, the degree that he was laser focused on issues that resinate with this old guard republican. From the Opening Question harris talked about her support for family formation, it a conservativE Talking point. Her recognition of small businesses and a key republican constituency and emphasized tax cuts, talking about russia and china, she offered unwavering commitment to israel, shE Talked about being a gun owner. The list goes on. I thought that it was targeted messaging, do you think it resinates, george . I think it does. I think the only argument is that trump makes it. She is too liberal for the country. He will try to bring up immigration or taxes and things like that. And, she just tacked right to the center. She took it. With the same thing that happened at the convention where they took over the flag. Donald trump spends all of his time trashing on america, not offering a vision for the future. It is a very negative view of the country and she is speaking positively about the country. Not the government but the people, the people with a little help from the government or less interference from the government being able to accomplish things for themselves and for their families some small businesses and so on. This, this is, This Is Classic American president ial politics that it is normal. And that is, that is the contrast that she was trying to and successfully drew with trump. And then she would say, watch the other guys rallies where shE Talks about Hannibal Lecte Exprrks he goes ander, and he chases the rabbit. What she did put a positive image. And thrown, contrasting herself with him. Giving him the side eye. It was so powerful. She did not over do it. She just looked at this man the way we all look at him. What is his frickin problem. What is, what is he even talking about. But she did it in such a controlled fashion. I mean it was the Split Screen, i think at The End of the day that destroyed trump not just the words that he used and the word that she used. We know, we heard them say a lot of these things before. But the Split Screen that is what, for biden, the Split Screen and the blank look on his face it mattered a lot. Tim, i, you know, i agree with both of you guys that a, that was a Master Class in debating on the part of Kamala Harris and that at the same time who knows if it actually moves the people it needs to move, right . We played the sound from the undecided voters. It is a mixed bag of people yeah, maybe i am still for trump but i think i am for harris and so much indecision. You have to wonder, is the reluctance to vote for harris when you see such a contrast because of her policy . Or something deeper and more personal like the fact that she is a woman . Or that she is a mixed Race Woman of color . Is it something cultural . Something personal that she herself can not manage or message, no ad Will Fix, no debate Will Fix but a decision that these voters have to come to on their own . Reporter look it is hard to say. I think The One thing that we have to recognize is that the fundamentals of this campaign largely remain unchanged despite everything else in the campaign turned on its head. We had an assassination attempt. We had the president pushed out of the way and his Vice President elevated to the top of the ticket in a historic intraparty nature. When you look at it from 12 months ago to six months ago to today, most of the core concerns that voters have remain pretty much unchanged. So, if voters were punishing Joe Biden for the procession of being weak on the economy, in they were punishing biden for being weak on immigration and crime, if they are punishing Joe Biden for the idea that politics is and the world is burning around us it makes sense that same concerns and criticisms would translate to his Vice President. Clearly not all of them have. She is polling significantly better than biden was. But, you know, i live in the midwest. I live in the battleground state. I am traveling to wisconsin, talking to people in michigan. A lot of what you pick up and also when you talk to party officials on both sides, what you pick up is that like she is an improvement from biden just in the fact that she is younger, she is articulate. She can put a sentence together. But she still is an unknown, alex, one debate does not address that. And it is not to minimize the issues you are raising. We know those issues are real and they are resident with voters and move the needle to some degree but i also think that she campaigned as Joe Bidens Vice President During Covid Election where the campaign was underwraps. Never had a true introduction to the american people and first term was rocky. They reeled her back in. So, really, this is someone who is still doing the hard work of introducing herself to a lot of voters. I think the good news for democrats is that to the degree she has become better known her favorables have gone up. The bad news for democrats it is still a condensed window in which they are trying to make that introduction. At The End of the day what we are seeing from some voters s look, we can not stand trump, he is repellent and yet, i think he will be better on these two or three core issues that i care about therefore i will vote for him again yes. Economic policy and i am not even sure what the other one is, George Conway and Tim Alberta thank you for your time tonight. Appreciate it. We have a lot more to get to tonight. Of all of the traps that Harris Set for trump, there is one that could decide the election. I will talk about that Coming Up. First, did you hear . A lot of winning Last Night. Trump won so much he got tired of winning. The only problem is he can not debate Kamala Harris ever gain.
