Once again, i am Stephanie Ruhle and we are now just 55 days away from the Election But Today campaigning was temporarily set aside as the candidates join together with the country in marking 23 years since the 9 11 terror attacks. Just 10 hours after facing off against one another in an intense debate, vp, Harris And Donald trump greeted one another and shook hands and a solemn commemoration at Ground Zero here in new York City. Harris, trump, and Jd Vance spent the day attending several events and were in new york, washington and pennsylvania for governor Tim Walz was in minnesota where he honored victims by helping Pack Meals for food banks. Peter, i turn to you first because you are at Ground Zero with president biden as well as the vp Donald Trump, Jd Vance. What was it like to see kamala Harris And Donald trump together , the only thing separating them was little Mike Bloomberg standing between them 12 hours after an absolutely brutal debate. There was something kind of surreal about it. They had spent an hour and a half on stage savaging Each Other, calling Each Other a Disgrace And Weekend horrible in all of these insulting things and then there they were the next day 12, 10 hours later, standing under the same tent at 9 11 and it was Mike Bloomberg who actually reached out to touch Kamala Harris to get her to turn around to draw her in to shake Donald Trumps hand and they did have a seemingly friendly handshake. In fact, trump seem to us that something pleasant to her and patted her hand, and they got along fine but its a reminder, i think, not of how politics used to be where there used to be respect across the aisle. Instead i think it is a reminder of how important 9 11 still is, the solemnity of this moment that it forces politicians who really dont like Each Other very much to at least pretend that they are part of the same country, the same nation, the same society at least for an hour. , it is something New Yorkers are so proud of, The Way we come together but it is something. When Mike Bloomberg is the one asking you to be polite, that is a rare day. Michael, lets talk though about 9 11, a truly devastating day for our country, especially for New Yorkers and on that day Donald Trump made a point of saying that his building became the tallest in new York City after the World Trade Center fell. Not only was that a grotesque thing to say, it was also a life along with the other lies he told that thousands of muslims were standing on roofs of buildings in New Jersey celebrating the attacks. That is who Donald Trump was 23 years ago today, so why is anyone surprised that 23 years shy one day later Last Night on the Debate Stage he lied for 90 minutes straight . That is who he is. Yes, that is who he is and that is who he was 23 years ago and that is who he is today. Donald trump has never been sensitive to the moment. He did not understand the gravity of 9 11. He did not process it. What he did process was now he has the tallest building in new york. That is what he processed. The other thing he processed, you know, was Conspiracy Theories that muslims keeping with this vein of antimuslim hatred that tried to emerge on the heels of 9 11 but for the guidance and soft words, actually, of President Bush to remind us who we are in a moment like this, he would have gone down that Rabbit Hole and tried to perpetuate those lies about muslims stirring up anti muslim hate among white people. That is basically his m. O. , so it does not surprise me that he is standing on the stage 23 years later with a black woman who was running for president parroting the same bs, and nor should the rest of us be surprised, especially the media that is covered them for 23 years. Especially the now last nine years so i wish the media would stop acting surprised when Donald Trump behaves a certain way because youve been covering that for as long as he has been on the stage and i think that is something that a lot of americans, as you look at this moment, are trying to pull themselves away from this sort of Oh My God you know, look at Donald Trump perform again. We are tired of it and there is a level of exhaustion that a lot of americans have, which has opened up this moment for, as harris Kamala Harris to say youve all got to be tired by now because i know i am so lets go forward. In 2016, for a lot of americans he was a new face, he was a new voice. People liked The Way he spoke directly but now in 2024, people know exactly who Donald Trump is. There are no surprises but molly, Frank Luntz had one of the most notable traits of the night and im just going to share it with our audience. If harris wants to win, she needs to train her face not to respond. It feeds into a female stereotype and more importantly , it risks offending undecided voters. What a harebrained idea you had there, frank. Are you kidding me . Yes, this is a stereotype if youre living in 1982. You know, i dont like to commit media on Media Violence but in this case i did troll him and say this is just totally misogynistic. Its stupid. It is also very stupid and it is not what happened at all. I think that is the most interesting thing was she actually got the power, she used the power. I read today the Sarah Longwell Piece in the atlantic about how a lot of these on the fence voters were saying she looked president ial, and even i read some other sort of on the fence voters were saying that they [ inaudible ] when she was laughing so i think it was just something from another century and there are the sort of hot Take Punditry things and some of them are misogynistic in the idea that she cant have normal facial expressions is one of them. But molly, isnt this like she really won the game of tv Last Night. She couldve had a lot of totally normal outraged responses, but she showed incredible discipline, like a silent assassin, wedding him spin himself like a top. Yeah, and she did a ton of research. She did a ton of person you could tell because she sort of knew what would get him and then she stepped back and let him do it and you know, that was just sort of she has been very good it kind of proving the doubters wrong. He did prep. It was Too Gabbard and Laura Loomer who prepped him. I believe that there. Peter, we are hearing Team Trump go on and on today about how unfair it was because he got fact checked way more than Kamala Harris did but heres the thing. Of course he did. Donald trump spent the entire night repeating wellknown lies and the fact checks were pretty basic. Its not an aggressive fact check to say im sorry, sir, nobody is eating animals or killing babies. Yes, if there is more Fact Checking its because there were more alleged facts to check and no question about it, he laid out a lot of things that were obviously completely false or fictional. One of my favorites is where he says that everybody in the country, liberals and conservatives, democrats and republicans wanted roe v. Wade overturned so the Abortion Issue could go back to the states. Thats obviously not even close to true. The last poll said 60 were opposed but he is said this repeatedly now as if it were true and somehow doesnt seem to be daunted when people do not back as you rightly say the eating Dogs Episode is likely what we will remember most about Last Night because it seems so farcical and absurd to bring it up in the first place but you know, the moderators got criticized last time around when trump faced off Joe Biden for not doing more realtime Fact Checking. Im sympathetic. It is really hard to do that in the moment if you stop every single sentence a politician like Donald Trump and say wait a second. This isnt quite right. There is a balance to be had between allowing a debate to go forward in allowing the other person in the debate to challenge factual miss assertions and not allowing complete falsehoods to be put on the air and that is a tough balance for any moderators to take. I think the moderators Last Night did a good job. If anything, hes going to be mad about Donald Trump repeating these Dog Stories he should be mad at Fox News and Jd Vance for feeding him this puppy chow. He said it right in the debate he learned it from watching his favorite tv personalities. Do you think at The End of the day any votes were changed Last Night because before the debate we talked about the undecided voters who said they didnt know enough about her, they havent seen her Last Night and Last Night she put on a show and so did he. Yes, generally i would say probably just a little bit at the margins maybe perhaps around the corner where somebody said oh yeah, i think im going to vote differently. That was not this debate. I think this debate did have more than a marginal impact on voters. I think it was apparent in some of the overnight reaction and responses from Focus Groups as well as Spot Poles that were taken. When you are showing 60 percent of the people watching the debates so that Kamala Harris won yeah, and when a lot of those voters are you know, sort of undecided centerright, independent voters who have largely been on the fence because of their hesitation around Joe Biden and now feel a little bit more engaged and leaning into this conversation for the presidency, i think it did and i think she acquitted herself as a president should, and that was important because going into this, one of the things i was very interested in seeing how she would manage was her prosecutorial instincts up against her president Ial Mantel and she was able to hold that president ial mental in front of the american people while she spanked that behind a little bit along The Way, as a prosecutor, and i appreciated that. I appreciated that because that is what she needed to do and i think a lot of voters responded to that. I think peter, in his reporting, and others could rapidly sense that there was something different about this, not to put peter on the spot, but something different about this debate as opposed to some of the others. The voters were receiving this a little bit differently than they had Bush League or or you know, the first bidentrump debate. I should correct myself. We know that Laura Loomer was there. She traveled with Donald Trump and was in the spin room. We do not know that she prepped him. Too gabbard gets all that credit. Lets talk about Taylor Swift. This morning, Donald Trump said she will probably pay for her endorsement in the marketplace i. E. Shes going to lose scores of fans, shes going to lose business. I heard that from other right wing pundits but i want to remind our audience that Taylor Swift endorsed Joe Biden four years ago. Since then, the Eras Tour raked in more than 1 billion, the highest grossing concert ever. She had the Topselling Album of the year three of the last four years. For you and i are sitting here shes across The Street at Radio City probably taking home all of the Video Music awards. What do you make of this endorsement in this backlash that her fans who are republicans will no longer be swifties . Theyre going to take her off. I mean, Donald Trump likes a threat. He loves to threaten people and Conservatives Love of white a boycott. Done, liberals are no stranger to the boycott. Yes for sure. But political boycotts im not too worried about Taylor Swift. I think shes going to be just fine but it is important you know, trump really has the sort of binary you are either for him or against him and if you are for him than he wants to bestow Crony Capital on you. Is michael saying debates usually dont matter. We can say the same about celebrity endorsements. Could taylor be different . She didnt just say im on this team. On her instagram she said and here is how you register to vote. In fact there were searches of you know, am i registered to vote in texas, right . So yeah, she is a huge driver of Get Out The Vote and by The Way, conservative Radio Hurst Houseware there was a celebrity there. Rush limbaugh was the biggest get out the Vote Driver when he was still alive so you know, shes not a political person but you know, her music is in some ways very emotional for a lot of these people so she is sort of and musicians, rock stars, artists have been political forever. Donald trump had brought it up. Im going to bring it up again, this ridiculous claim that immigrants are stealing and eating pets in the state of ohio. We are going to get the facts straight with someone who was actually there. Later, striking fears about migrants is nothing new for trump vp pick. It is how Jd Vance edged out a win in his Ohio Senate rates. We are speaking about it with his former opponent Tim Ryan. Lets say youre deep in a show or a game or the game. On a train, at home, at work. Okay, maybe not at work. Point is at xfinity. Were constantly engineering new ways to get the entertainment you love to you faster and easier than ever. Thats what i do. Is that Love Island . Among the many things we heard from Donald Trump during the debate with Kamala Harris was a baseless lie about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio. These are the people that she and biden led into our country. In springfield, they are eating the dogs, the people that came in, they are eating the cats. They are eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what is happening in our country and it is a shame. Know it is not. That right there was former president Donald Trump spreading a Conspiracy Theory that he learned from Social Media in front of tens of millions of americans. The truth matters on the show and i want to make this absolutely clear. None of what you just heard from the former president is remotely true. For more on this i want to bring in an actual expert on the subject, Clark County Commission president melanie wilt. Thank you so much for being here, commissioner. The governor of your state has said this is not true. Can you please tell us in your official capacity, have you seen any evidence of these claims, pets been stolen, killed and eaten . Absolutely none. I have spoken with Springfield Pd and our sheriffs office. We have had concerned calls come into our Dispatch Center and they have been followed up on and have not been substantiated. What was your reaction Last Night . You, like millions of other americans, are watching the debate. What was your reaction when you heard Donald Trump talk about springfield and spread this lie . We do have very real issues in springfield, ohio and immigration is a very real issue so im glad that our potential president is talking about it and bringing light to it but the issues in springfield that are really related to a big surge of haitian refugees coming to our community, most of them are actually here legally. Local leaders in our community are really focused On The Issues that matter, which are ensuring that people are driving with proper licenses. Secondly, funding to help alleviate the pressure we are feeling from the infrastructure when we have 20,000 more people working in the same infrastructure, it just doesnt work anymore and finally, we want to work on cultural assimilation and helping people to overcome some of these cultural gaps and barriers we are seeing between our traditional Springfield And Clark county residents and those who are new to our community. Why do you have this large group of immigrants mostly from haiti . It is my understanding that they came here several years ago for jobs and inexpensive housing. We have a very low cost of living in comparison to the rest of the united states here. They came here for jobs and were brought by Temp Agencies that had opportunities to place them in positions here because we did have available jobs. One haitian Community Leader in springfield spoke to my colic. I want to show you what he said about how these lies have impacted his community. They are scared for their lives. Some of them were asking me even yesterday i got a Friend Calling me asking me if he has to leave because he is scared for his life. Another friend told me that it seems that he wouldve had some family coming to visit him but it seems that hes going to welcome them in Columbus Or Dayton because its not safe right now for him in springfield. These are hardworking immigrants who are here legally doing jobs, being part of the community. What is your reaction to what he just said . There are real concerns for those who live here and for haitian immigrants who have come here, as well. One thing that i dont have concerns about his safety. Haitian immigrants are not a Law Enforcement Problem in our community. They are much more likely to be victims of crimes than be the perpetrators of those crimes, so i do have concerns mostly about what this is doing to the image of our community. I do have concerns about what it will do potentially to Business Investment and others who might come here to visit, because we have a lot of great things in this community that we want people to come here for. President trump has been to our community before and i know he is aware of that in Senator Vance has been good to ohio and to springfield and we want to encourage them to come in and kind of see all of this for themselves. And i just ask before we go, if you did not have all those migrants there filling all those jobs, what would it do to the economy in springfield if none of them ever came or if they were subject to a Mass Deportation . Because these are refugees, the Deportation Conversation is somewhat moot because they are here on temporary Refugee Status so they are not here on an illegal status and so i dont know why there would be any kind of Mass Deportation but as far as our economy is concerned, we did have available jobs, we did Need Workers so that was a match at the time people were brought here to fill those temporary jobs. Unfortunately, we have been saturated and our infrastructure is definitely at Max Capacity and we are looking for ways we can deal with that at this time so we are looking for additional federal funding. The state has been generous with funding for Healthcare And Driver training. Those are the really important things that we want to stay focused on. You got a lot of heat for it at the time and Last Night, america got to see the Kamala Harris that you told us about. How you feeling now . I feel great. But she was awesome. I feel great for the country, i feel great for the party. She was just one of those like any business, if you have talent, you have smarts, and youre generally like wanting to learn, youre going to grow in whatever job you get into, even if that job at the time maybe a little bit over your head. She had the 2020 election in which she did not run a great race. She became vp. She just kept growing and growing and learning and that is why i was like, what are we doing . Like this is the one that should take the mantle and Last Night was so fun to watch. The only thing better was Fox News after watching the meltdown. I wasnt watching Fox News and im not sure why you were. I got a lot of entertainment from that. Lets talk about the Vp Debate because it is less than a month away. You know Tim Walz. You have debated Jd Vance. He is mysterious. When you think about a guy like Tim Walz, he is very affable, he is someone you would think might run for office, huge likability factor. Jd vance has almost none, similar to a Ron Desantis yet both are in office. What is the key to running against these guys . I think showing the personality, showing the likability, talking straight. Jd can get into these very theoretical, highminded conversations to try to explain the insanity of immigrants Eating Dogs or whatever. You can see him Last Night on some of the shows. Thats the lowest level possible. It is low but he tries to get into some level of nuance and i think Wallss Strength is going to be the coach, the strength, the straight talk, the normal explanations people can understand. The key is going to be dont let Jd Vance get away with a bunch of his bs because he will try to say ive never said that. Thats not what i meant. He will try to wiggle out of some of these crazy things that he has said and i think Walls Mac Walz is a perfect person to call him out on it. I just spoke to the County Commissioner President its totally acceptable to say we have a ton of migrants who have come from this area, we have more than we can handle and we have a problem. That is acceptable. How does a Conspiracy Theory like this start, people are stealing, killing and eating animals. What went through your mind, how does something like this spread so fast . The analysis is like the white supremacist groups in some of these extreme groups online started to amplify and its all about scaring people and they think that is the best way to do it. People in ohio are pretty normal people. They may vote a little more conservative depending on the election but they are pretty normal people and Theres Nothing wrong with that. Immigration is complicated. Theres no one is going to say like this is easy and i thought what trump did Last Night put him in a lane obviously in so many ways but on the extremism, Eating Dogs and cats and all that craziness so the question is, if this is so complicated, if we need immigrants, if they work really hard like a lot of the ceos in Spring Field have said like i would hire 30 more haitians because they work so hard but we cant have too many, there needs to be a process. You cant just come in and skip the line. Thats a complicated conversation. Who was the leader running right now that can actually bring us together right now and say lets have this complicated conversation. Lets admit it is complicated and i think that is for kamala over the next month or two is going to create a lot of space between trump. , that is not what he is doing. His Fear Mongering has gone so far that he has upset in Ohio Family that is faced and is greased grief and tragedy. The father of the boy in ohio is demanding an apology from Jd Vance and trump after they cited this young boy is death as a reason to stop patient immigration. Jd vance and Donald Trump have spoken my Sons Name and used his death for political gain. This needs to stop now. They can vomit all the hate they want about illegal immigrants. The border crisis, and even untrue claims about fluffy pets being ravaged and eaten by community members. However, they are not allowed, nor have they ever been allowed to mention Aiden Clark from springfield, ohio. I will listen to them one more time to hear their apologies. People from ohio, that is not normal, that is a father who is extraordinary. His son was killed in an accident. Yeah, that is heartbreaking to watch because anybody who has kids puts themselves in that situation, but what it really illustrates is, there is nobody who cant be used by Donald Trump and Jd Vance to score political points. No grieving family, no complicated immigration situation, no woman who has a complicated pregnancy. Those are all pawns in the game and i think that is the exhaustion that america sees right now at i think they are going to reject that because it is not american. Its not human. Its not kind, is not compassionate and that is what you see and it is really sad to watch because that poor family like when the show is over and the story subsides, they will never be the same and youve watched two politicians just use them. Inflation rate is now at 2. 5 , the lowest we have seen since february of 2021. That comes as the fed is expected to cut Interest Rates later this month. The economy, of course, when they talked about the economy they shouldve turned up the volume because it was the very first question at last Nights Debate and now surprise candidates clashed over their plans and how theyre going to help voters. Donald trump has no plan for you and when you look at his economic plan, it is all about Tax Breaks for the richest people. What the Wharton School has said is Donald Trumps plan would actually explode the deficit. I went to the Wharton School of finance and many of those professors, the top professors think my plan is a brilliant plan. Its a great plan. Its a plan that is going to bring up our worth, or value as a country. Do you believe americans can afford higher prices because of tariffs . We are not going to have higher prices and who was going to have higher prices is china and all of the countries that have been ripping us off for years. I intend to create an opportunity in economy, investing in smaller businesses, new families, what we can do around protecting seniors is the word many . It needs to be the drinking game. Many, many. Peter, this is good news on inflation but things still cost a lot. The average thing you want to buy is still 20 higher than it was a few years ago. Trying to get car insurance, homeowners insurance, crippling. That is why it was a hard question, the first question Kamala Harris got asked. Are you better off . It is hard to say yes because it is complicated. What is going to change that . I dont think theres enough time and it was the weakest bit of her debate Last Night. The first question i thought was her worst response and even though inflation is coming down inflation is still high in its workingclass voters the most so its not just car insurance, it is gross Reason Weve done polling for the last year. It is really the essentials, groceries, eggs, meat and i think its too late which is why what she needed to do and she did it obviously by The End of the debate, was change the subject. I dont think the economy is a winner for her even though inflation now [ inaudible ] but heres the thing. It might not be a winner for her. It could potentially have been a winner for trump but his plan is tariffs that are going to worsen inflation. Donald trump is up there saying listen, we needed these tariffs because i learned during covid we dont make chips here so she was able to turn and look at the camera and say yes thats why we have the chips act. It was potentially a weakness for her and Donald Trump made it weaker for himself. Then he sites you know having gone to fortin and his wharton professors and many professors. You know, tariff is a tax on the american people. The american people are going to pay that tariff, not china and not the people he will be slapping the taxon, so its a combination of his inability to actually understand economics. He is then talking about how hes going to reduce taxes, you know, the corporate Income Tax from 21, already incredibly low. He did that in his first term. I think that was a big mistake. Now hes going to lower it to 15. He wants to cut off taxes and tips on social security okay, fine but then somehow at the same time hes reducing taxes everywhere, hes also going to finally focus on the national debt . But why does he say hes going to . Why does he pretend like hes focusing on it when he raised the national debt 8 Trillion during his administration . Have you just asked peter and i for Donald Trump lies . The show only has 10 minutes to go. We Cant Help you with that. To the american people that care about the deficit anymore because Donald Trumps plan will balloon the deficit. I guess the question is whether people ever cared about the deficit. At some point, the markets will begin to care about the deficit. I spent six years in europe covering the debt crisis. At some point the financial markets as your debt is so high were not going to fund you or we are going to fund you at exorbitant rates. That is bad for everyone. Suddenly my Mortgage Rate goes up in my Credit Card Rate goes up. At some point, the financial market will say were not going to fund everyone. This used to be a republican party issue. The republican party we used to know is all gone. You are forgetting at some point the markets will react but the key word there is at some point. We live in a world of short term is him and one of these lawmakers care because they dont think it will happen on their watch. Do you think though that Last Night her performance changed Anybodys Mind and i am talking about this kind of Wall Street Class . Elon musk of all people even came out and sat on twitter that her performance exceeded most peoples expectations. What ive been hearing for my sources in the last two weeks is listen, we dont know her. We dont know how she can lead. She had a commanding performance Last Night. I can tell you, my sources were not taken my calls today. How about you . I think youve got 20 who are just totally in the tank for Donald Trump No Matter what he says or does, whether that is for their own political aspirations, for their wallet even though there are already plenty rich already, they dont need another Tax Cut or even the extension of the truck Tax Cut so thats 20 of Wall Street. If you are super rich the one thing you dont have under your Christmas Tree is power and Donald Trump will give that to you this christmas. Please. 80 of Wall Street, the Rank Andfile are democrats so i think they were really excited and happy about her performance Last Night. I agree with you. Im hearing some of the same things. They didnt like biden and they didnt like by them because his administration has been very antibusiness, the ftc under lena con, hes very prolabor. That is antibusiness so they didnt like biden i think that was pushing them even though they were holding their nose, toward trump. He is antibusiness having no regulation. As antibig business having no rules. He is antijust absolute gluttony but hes not antibusiness. The last two democratic president s, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton i would say his record on business is much tougher than either of those two. Barack obama was very tough on business. Wall street did not like obama. Our economy is one of the strongest in the world coming out of covid in the stock market, which i know lots of people on Wall Street really like, is at an alltime high and continues to gain strength even in the face of rising Interest Rates, which i have to say frankly it was about time that Interest Rates have risen because they were held artificially low for 13 years and thank goodness they are allowed to be more [ inaudible ] yes, everybody had the greatest Safety Net and we dont have any time but guess what, it doesnt have to be labor or business. We want labor to work with business. That is what creates a fantastic economy. When we come back, we cant go home without talking about this, one of the darkest moments in our countrys history. It is still uniting us after 23 years. We are going to take a moment to pause, love and remember 9 11. Ve and remember 9 11. This one requires a big deep breath. The last thing before we go tonight, remembering, never to forget. Today marks 23 years since the September 11 Terrorist attacks. Memorials were held today in new York City, shanksesville, pennsylvania and at the pentagon. Here are some of the services [singing] services [singing]. The seven crewmembers saved an unknown told number of people. We honor their actions as a heroic display of unity, courage and defiance. Every day we serve in the only surviving building struck by Al Qaida on September 11 and every day we carry a powerful sense of purpose. We are the united states of america. We do not bend to terror. And an uncertain times, our compass remains our constitution. [singing] and the home of the brave. Nearly 3,000 inspect people were killed on September 11. Tonight, our hearts go out to those that lost Loved Ones on that horrible, horrible day. We promise to never forget. And on that note. I wish you a very safe night.
