Thats the headline from the Wall Street Journal following his debate to see night with Vice President Kamala Harris in philadelphia. The paper states this, gop lawmakers and others fretted that trump had missed chances to challenge harris on her record and instead let his own controversies become the bigger story as Harris Needling got under his skin. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of south carolina, a staunch ally of trump, called the debate a missed opportunity. And republican Senator Kevin Cramer of north dakota, said, quote, he treated if like a minirally in a lot of respects. Youve got to be talking to swing voters in Swing States. He could do that better with details. Were also now getting new reaction from inside the Trump Camp with one advisor to the former president telling Nbc News it was not his best performance without question. And a longtime republican operative said i know everyone in the world has said this, but the Inability Or Unwillingness to realize when hes being baited and not fall for it is constantly baffling. At the same time democratic congressman Jared Mosquewits of florida poked fun at trumps Debate Performance saying it might be time to have those difficult conversation about whether to proceed or drop out of the race. The former president is also claiming now he won the debate against Vice President harris and perhaps does not need to participate in a second one. Trump has been relentlessly criticizing Abc News and its moderators claiming he was not just debating harris but also the two journalists hosting the event. And despite preechbsly claiming multiple times he would do a second debate with harris, trump is now hedging on that idea. You know, when you win, you dont necessarily have to do it a second time, so well see. But i thought we had a great debate last night. When you dont win, its like a fighter. As a fighter when a bad fight gets knocked or loses the fight, the first thing he says we want a rematch. So we won the debate according to every poll, every single poll. Are we going to do a rematch, i just dont know. Meanwhile, there are reports that Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to begin a more aggressive phase on the Campaign Trail in order to build momentum from that debate. Harris is Hiing The Road visiting key Battleground States as part of what the campaign as deeming its new way forward tour. Harris will hold backtoback Rallies Today in charlotte and greensborough, North Carolina, followed by events on friday in pennsylvania. The campaign is also reportedly preparing to release a slew of ads featuring key moments from the debate and planning more interviews with local media in key Swing States in efforts to reach voters in those battlegrounds. Meanwhile, her running mate, governor tim walz, will be hitting the Rust Belt making campaign Stops Today and tomorrow in michigan and then traveling to wisconsin for an event on friday followed by a rally on saturday at the university of wisconsin superior. Well, john, it starts of course with the tours you mentioned. And were watching now as the time ticks down where theyre going and continues to signal they believe North Carolina is truly in play and a pretty Eye Opening Governors Race there giving democrats a bit of a tail wind, and i think well continue to see Vice President harris in pennsylvania as much as they can squeeze her in there basically. So those two in georgia really seem to be part of a Narrowing Map or at least part of the ongoing fight that biden had not had as much competition in all seven states. I dont want to be too rude to the current president , as it were, john. We dont like being rude. And media interviews are also telling the campaign is touting. It looks like this will include local media. Theres been a lot of discourse and shes done more local or constituency and looks like theyll continue to do that including a conversation next week with the Association Of Black Journalists for the campaign. Until now she sort of borrowed from the Biden Campaign Strategy of not really doing press, going around the traditional mainstream media to get their message out. So it looks like theyre sort of opening that as well. Maybe she missed an opportunity to fill in the gap. There are voters who want to know more about her and about her policy. Maybe a more aggressive schedule will help with that. Some real frustration amongst republicans. I know you have a new piece from Bloomberg News about just that. Whats the concern from the gop, and what adjustments may come from the Trump Camp . Well, the fact theyre backtracking on this strategy of demanding debates is i think telling, of course. When it was biden on the Ticket Trump was saying anytime, anyplace. As you know, john, he used the Prize Fighter Analogy and football analogy. When you lose the Super Bowl you usually try to win another Super Bowl. So this notion you would walk away because you think you won the debate, doesnt hold a lot of water. Right now i think its just up in the air. Harris is The One writing a Blank Check now on debate schedules. Tables have flipped completely on that. Were watching to see whether shes going to get a bounce in the polls or trump continues to see this sort of leveling off. His camp was sort of enthused the sort of Postnomination Bump Harris has had in particular around the dnc has leveled off. Things are sort of getting back to normal and settling in a place where trump has a dead heat or even a bit of an edge in a national vote, let alone in those key Battleground States. Harris is thought to win the vote by a fair margin to speak to the electoral college. That is i think giving them confidence right now things are leveling off, entering a new phase, and theyre back to a more traditional Campaign Hitting of course over a couple of core issues in particular, inflation and the border. Yeah, itll take a few days, maybe a week or so what bump she may have gotten from the debate. Lastly and briefly youve got a new piece with the Headline Biden is urged to reconsider 14 Billion u. S. Steel takeover. Tell us a little bit about this issue, which also has major electoral considerations considering the state involved. Yeah, it is swirling, john. This is around the takeover of u. S. Steel by a japanese company. Japan, of course, an ally country. And theres been a controversy. Harris, biden, and trump all oppose the takeover. Union leadership hate the deal but they themselves like it, and theyre saying they worry that biden killing this deal is going to risk throwing the baby out with the bathwater and give up on investment that will otherwise try to turn things around. This is, of course, Concentrated In Pennsylvania and Western Pennsylvania in particular. You Cant Picture a more crucial battleground than this, and biden has been so strong at opposing it, there are signs the politics are a little more mixed, might not get a full boost in terms of siding with the union, but it looks like hes calculating get it, although its a little unclear. Where it stands now it feels like the clock is ticking down. Theyve not exclusively said when the deadline is, but biden might have to make a decision on this before the election. And so theres a lot of intrigue to this one. Trump, of course, calling on him to do it. But the politics on it are messy and over the election such a crucial battleground.
