M. , to keep former President Trump happy. And b, theres also his own prospects as speaker hanging in the balance. A lot of folks have said theyre watching this Spending Fight very closely to see how the speaker cares for the right flank but also Placates Moderatesads he looks to keep his gavel or just remain gop leader come next year. Yesterdays Threat Led to the evacuation of city hall, two schools and the local Motor Vehicle agency. Mayor Rob Roux told the Washington Post that the city needs help, not the hate thats being spread by some political leaders. And during Tuesday Nights president ial debate, Donald Trump made the baseless claim that haitian migrants were Eating Pets in springfield, ohio. He then doubled down on the claim during his rally in arizona yesterday. Joining us now is democratic congresswoman Becca Balint of vermont. Congresswoman, thanks so much for joining us. What do you make of trumps comments and the impact its having on this community in springfield . And are you worried about his rhetoric spreading to actual violence . Yes, i am worried because this is more of the same of what weve seen from this ticket, which is they do spread Hate And Fear. They dehumanize. They demonize. They have no concern about how it impactS People on the ground. And when you think about these folks in springfield, ohio, theyre just trying to live their live. Theyre just trying to go to work, send their kids to school, and they have to deal with this, you know, national story of them, you know, doing outrageous things that are obviously not happening. And once again its about spreading Hate And Fear instead of actually talking about the issues that are important to americans. And as a former teacher i can tell you words absolutely matter, and it is just breathtaking how much Fear And Racism and sexism they can spread without any concern at all for how its impacting People on the ground. I want to turn to where you work, Capitol Hill. Obviously, theres a Funding Deadline coming up. Its almost in the background at thiS Point, but in 18 days youre going to run out of government funds. Do you think congress can still pass a Spending Bill by the September 30th deadline and what might that legislation look like . You know, i think in the end we will end up passing a clean Continuing Resolution. This is what always happens. So i just want to ive been in congress now just you know, were coming up on almost two years, and it has been chaos from the very first week, right . We had a fight over the speaker. We then you know, that dragged on from a week. We careened from one Debt Ceiling Crisis to a Government Shutdown crisis. It just is constant chaos. And the republicans what ive noticed are not actually interested in governing. Its not surprising here we are again, they had the entire August Recess to try and get a Continuing Resolution queued up and ready to go, but they just cant help themselves. They cannot stay the course. Instead they listen to trump, trump goes on tv and says, of course, you should shut the government down because thats good for me. Its always about him, and they dont have the backbone or the courage to remember that they are there actually to do work on behalf of the american People and not on behalf of the former president. Congresswoman, you make serving in Congress Sound so glamorous. I want to turn to a story in national politics here. I dont know if vermont necessarily is the best microcosm of the nation writ large, although i will say theres a lot of interesting rural communities in the state. Absolutely. Were 50 or so days out from the election. What is your sense of where the electorate is from talking to your constituents both after the debate and with respect to the Trump And Harris matchup . Yeah, youre right. Vermont is a rural state, and like every state, we run the gamut of political perspectives. What ive been hearing for years is the top issue for People, the overarching issue is concern about the democracy, and thats still what im hearing now. Theres a lot of enthusiasm about this ticket, about the harriswalz ticket. They do respond to the fact that the Vice President speaks directly to the american People about what her plans are, whether its on housing, whether its making sure People get cheaper prescription drugs. She actually has a plan. She is speaking to the issues of concern to them at the grocery. So it is resonating. People feel like this is somebody who is concerned with how their lives are, how their children are, how their families are, and theyre not hearing that from the former president. I think shes going to win handily in vermont, and i think that i know its going to be a shocker. Its a shocker. [ laughter ] but i do think it really speaks to what shes been saying for weeks now. People are exhausted. We dont want to hate our neighbors. We really dont. It doesnt help us individually. It doesnt help the nation. I do think People are ready to turn the page. And the more that we see the hateful rhetoric from the trumpvance ticket, the more People are just ready to turn away from it. It is not serving us. It is not serving our democracy. Donald trump had a bad night, and i think the worse thing is he took her bait. You know, she made fun of his crowd size, and he couldnt resist getting hung up on that. That, to me, is telling. I think that led to a spiral of him kind of falling apart throughout the night. He took her bait, like, repeatedly. Crowd sizes, inheritance, all that stuff, he just kept taking it. I want to turn to a piece that you have written entitled reagan republicans, spare yourself the agony of the trumpharris debate. Im kind of curious, do you think there is a universe of republicans still out there who are not necessarily with trump and can be persuaded to support Kamala Harris, or are there just some highprofile republicans, like Alberto Gonzales and the cheneys willing to say, yeah, well support her . I think there are People out there. I saw the reagan movie. It is a clear contrast. If youre watching it and living here in 2024, there is a clear contract with reagan on things like moral clarity and Donald Trumps lack of moral clarity and his behavior. When talking about ukraine, harris sounded like ronald reagan. Donald Trump Wouldnt even say whether he wanted ukraine to win against russia. If youre someone who is a never trump Reagan Conservative out there, maybe youre not keen to vote for a democrat, dont like the idea of voting for Kamala Harris, but, look, sam, this election is going to come down to was it 2020 . I think Joe Biden won by virtue of 45,000 votes in three states. Yup. Were talking about the margins here. Yeah, everything matters, including getting the Reagan Conservatives. Speaking of moral clarity, do you feel like People like President George W. Bush have a moral obligation to speak out, not just say theyre not voting for trump, but if they believe it, to say theyre voting for harris . Um, i think he should. I think george w. Bush should come out and say what we know, what i think everyone knows, that he wants Kamala Harris to win. Its not about ideology. I think George Bush is more conservative than Kamala Harris. I know i am. But if you believe that Donald Trump is not fit to be a president , i think you have that obligation. I suspect thats where bush is. I want to get your quick take on whats happening with the issue in springfield, ohio. Talk about a microcosm for trumpism maybe. The negativist policies, the disinformation, the conservative Media Ecosystem amplifying these falsehoods. What is your take on why trump iS Pushing this stuff about pets being eaten . Also, why, i think more importantly, voters feel animated on the republican side to respond to it . Yeah, sam, look, on one hand, this is to be expected. My only surprise is that this didnt come out in mid october instead of september, right . It feels like an October Kind of crazy story. But, look, this is in keeping with the maga right. We had questioning Winston Churchill recently. Was he the villain of World War ii . We saw some rightwing influencers who, it looks like, took some money from russia, maybe unknowingly, but money was funneled to them to advance russian propaganda. So this whole crazy thing about cats and dogs is in line with that sort of conspiratorial thinking. Dogs and cats are the Third Rail of american politics. Mitt romney was devastated by seamus the dog, that we put him on the roof of the car on family vacations. Kristi noem, her Vice President ial aspirations were effectively ended when she told on herself a story about shooting her dog, cricket.
