Brooklyn, how we doing . When the host and Creative Director of Msnbc Life and we are so excited to welcome you to our very first of soldout fanfocused event. Thank you. This is where you get to meet and greet your favorite msnbc personalities live and in person , and i can let you guys in on a little secret. Steves khakis are just the same as in real life. Over the course of the day, we will give you our take on the state of this crazy election. Are you enjoying it so far . Its only september. All right, lets get this thing kicked off. You may have seen them reporting from the dnc. They are going to tell you what it was like to be there in that electric atmosphere, but first theyre going to dig into what is at stake in november. Please welcome to the stage, the host of the readout, Joy Read and Alex Wagner. Thank you. Add a selfie. So smart. Hello. Thank you all for coming. How amazing is this . Amazing. Thank you, brooklyn. I think we are going to just jump right in because really what we are doing right now is just recreating what happened in the democratic national [ inaudible ] with fewer potato chips, unfortunately. We have no table. If we had chips, the chips would be in our seats. Can we talk about how much fun we had . We had too much fun. At a point i did actually feel bad for everybody in New York. Who here was at the convention, was anyone here at the convention . It was more amazing than i thought anybody thought it would be and we got to be there and soak in the magic with my longtime friends, one of my favorite people in the world and also at msnbc, and we had an endless supply of fried snacks and then Kamala Harris got the nomination, so what could be better than that . The thing that is so interesting as we have had a journey. One of the first shows that i used to go on, on a regular basis, and one of the first people that let me fill in for her, was miss Alex Wagner so we do go back a ways. We seen a lot of elections come and go. Rank this one in terms of the intensity of the vibes and the feelings around it. I think this one holds even more weight because when Barack Obama was running, he was not running against Donald Trump, so there is the trump factor, which is us standing on the precipice of end times, and then there is the kind of candidacy that Barack Obama represented and when Kamala Harris represents, which is the trajectory of american Society And Culture and what it means for us to be whether we are trending more toward a more inclusive and diverse society. I think in the post obama, trump years, a lot of people question mike did Barack Obama come too soon . Was he an aberration . Was it just eight years of us glimpsing prematurely into a future that was a long way off, and Donald Trump seemed to be such a repudiation of the moral arc of the universe bending toward justice. The harris candidacy, i think, represents an affirmation that the path that Obama Sort of opened up for the country might actually be its destiny, and that and so you know, it is not just a democrat might save the country from Donald Trump. It is a democrat who could meaningfully move the ball forward and finally shatter that last glass ceiling, so it is you know, exponentially, the levels of import, the stakes are so incredibly high and i think that has given rise to a joy that is really powerful. It is interesting because think about the trajectory that happened in 2008. You had this incredible thing that happened, a country that was born a slave colony, series of Slave Colonies elect its first black president , a remarkable achievement than four years later is he is re elected and it seemed this inexorable path was toward a woman being president and that got interrupted by Donald Trump and that was a shock to the system that then produces The End of a right that for a lot of women, was unthinkable, right they would never lose. Now that is part of the context of another woman stepping forward, getting the nomination and you know, it is remarkable that the question of whether the country was what President Obama represented or whether it is what trump represented as a live question for a lot of people and increasingly, there is this sense that maybe trump is the aberration and i think that is an important thing but i just think of it maybe. Well see how it goes. If that happens, one of the people who will deserve the most credit is an older white man named Joe Biden. Right . Yeah. By the way, i have to throw this in, because you were there in the Spin Room on the night of the debate. I sure was. The debate that kicked all of this off. At the time, what people were doing in the Spin Room is trying to say i know, its going to be fine. They were spinning as hard as they could. I remembered talking to Gavin Newsom. All the republicans came out. It was like stephen miller, Matt Gaetz and Crystal Acevedo and all the trump people, nobody wanted to talk to them and then Gavin Newsom came out and everyone is like, lets talk to the democrats and see how they are feeling after this. The panic that sat in after the first 10 minutes of the debate was like nothing ive ever witnessed. The phones were blowing up and there were so many questions about biden, about the party, about the country and what has unfolded in the course of the last eight weeks, six weeks. I have no sense of time anymore. Its been 2000 years. Just to talk about the Joe Biden of it all, this man who will be seen potentially as the fulcrum around you know, two black President S, but not only right . So like, he is there and provides a very important role for Obamas Candidacy and his presidency and then as president himself, in the wake of the covered disaster and economic calamity that was largely the fault of Donald Trump and then potentially does something that no one has ever done other than george washington, is to take the power and make sure that the line of succession is clear and final. I mean, the extraordinary nests of those acts will never be forgotten. Absolutely on the thing about it is i liken him to a character in Game Of Thrones who faced Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful woman other than Kamala Harris ever in american history. The most successful and powerful speaker i would argue ever in history, the most successful Speaker And Somebody who you know, its not as if she was the only person. Across the democratic party there was this incredible anxiety she was just willing to say out loud on television so its not as if shes orchestrating everything that happened but she was willing to put yourself out there because of her power and because of the esteem she holds in the party and she said, this is what needs to happen and it was not just her again. Its really important not to say that is just her but when President Biden says all right, im going to accede to the wishes of my party but im going to do the thing that to me in my view confers the most power. Im going to name my successor. Im doing this on my terms and i named this person as my successor. Thats a power move. It is also we just have to contrast the two parties in this moment because as you say it is Nancy Pelosi leading the charge and i think insofar as you have to lead the charge is going to be a difficult position but doing it in the most respectful way i think you can try and do such a thing, the democratic firmament like managing the trips, having to go public sometimes, democratic voters making their wishes known and then when Kamala Harris steps in, rallying around this person with an Enthusiasm And Joy and electricity that none of us could have predicted. It is a party and i say this after cheney announced listen, like you want to see what a high functioning, inclusive, Well Oiled Machine looks like, look at the democratic party. That is one of the things that was so remarkable about the convention. You saw, you know, republican former members of the Trump Administration walking around giving love all over the place. You saw adam kinsinger, people who ideologically disagree, it shows you that you have one political party that is inclusive of everyone. Its prodemocracy. Still to come, jen psaki, Kate Shaw, Ari Melber, Andrew Weissmann , stephanie ruhle, Lawrence Odonnell and of course, Rachel Maddow. donnel course, Rachel Maddow. Dad i got a huge barbeque wing stain. This bottle says i need to pretreat. That stuff has way more water. A little bit of tide goes a long way, so you can save your shirt and maybe even a little money. Moat the. Library. S right. For a better clean with less. Its got to be tide. Ryan t. We are back with Joy Taylor and Alex Wagner. Weve got to talk about kamala debbie harris. She has sent to the moment and people want to question her background. Basically she is alex plus me, okay . Youre welcome. Look at this stage, get it in your mind. Our moms noticed. The guys i like we dont care. [ inaudible ] she is asian, too. Dont forget that on your television show. My godmother, theyre out of control. She is a polyglot human being. She is what america is. This is how you build america. It is the immigrants that come in and they come in and they become part of this country. She has stepped up and stepped into this moment in a way that i think a lot of people fail to anticipate because they were not covering her and were not paying attention to her and us two people who did cover her and did pay attention to her it wasnt surprising but lets talk about how they stepped into it. Can we just have an agreement that campaigns dont need to be two years long . Give it to me. Three months undone. I think its like certainly media is a huge part of this. Also, Kamala Harris has grown. Shes able to define herself. She is able to speak with confidence. She is able to laugh and be joyful in a way that is exhilarating. Ive said this before, for women who watch other women have to sacrifice so much of themselves to be national figures. Its just a thrill to watch someone out there who looks like shes having fun, who looks like she is relishing this not solely because of duty, but because she wants to be there and goes and talks to people on the Campaign Trail and enjoys it. That is something that i think her ability to conduct herself with confidence and is this something that is really come to the forefront and lost four years and i think the experience of washington is oh, youre now a swamp creature. The reality is you can learn some things on the job. Maybe having someone who has learned a couple things is a good prerequisite for being president. She would be one of the most experienced figures ever to take office if she were to win the White House. We also have to talk about her running mate. Your first big decision is a president ial candidate is to choose your partner and President Obama, youve got to choose your Road Dog and President Obama chose Joe Biden. He really was one of the most effective vice President S ever. Very smart choice. Lets talk about Coach Walz, you all. First of all, he knows how to order a donut. Maybe just like some grasp of humanity. If you guys have not seen the Jd Vance in the donut shop video, like it is actually we played it on Alex Wagner tonight and people were mad at me. They were like why did you subject me to that. Its worse than a cringe. Its almost as painful as him being on the podcast with the gentleman that said boy its good that you have that indian motherinlaw to nanny your kids. When Jd Vance starts talking about ovulation and menopause, i turn the volume down. But, i will say one wonderful thing there are so many wonderful things about being at the convention but before, you could tell what the mood of the convention speaker, the main speaker is going to be when they bring out the song science, right . Like thank you, joe or we Heart Joe was the sign the first night and then on tuesday . Walz was going to speak. They started bringing a sign that said Coach Walz and like big heads and i was like oh, this is going to be like a Pep Rally because hes the governor of minnesota. They didnt say Governor Walz or Congressman Walz or mr. Wells but it was like Coach Walz. Then you could hear like Marching Bands like returning this and the homecoming. I 100 and by the way when i tell you i think the Minnesota Delegation is still in the arena they were leaving. We were literally leaving. People were cleaning around them and theyre like no, there still party. Were here, were happy. Were like everyones gone and there like we dont care. Theyre still there. Weve got to talk very briefly about the other side because it is been a challenging few weeks, months for trumpet vents. They have had a rough time. They have had a rough time and this is a point will need to discuss with friends and neighbors more because so much of the year was spent talking about Joe Bidens cognitive abilities. If you have listened to Donald Trump, the man is giving rambling, incoherent answers that very much beg the question if he is still playing with a full deck of cards and that part of the conversation im not trying to be a just. My mom is 80 and she could out debate Donald Trump In A Heartbeat but i do think if we are concerned about the mental Health And Acuity and cognitive skills of the commander of our armed forces and one of the most powerful leaders in the free world, all republicans should have one of the same conversations democrats have about just how functioning Donald Trumps. I think its even more important have that conversation because you have a group of people from the Heritage Foundation and from his former administration that have already made plans to run the country. Theyve already written it down. Its called Project 2025 and if Donald Trump is not at his full cognitive capacity than one wonders who would be making policy, who would be Making Decisions and the obvious answer is that the readymade playbook is what we would be living under and that playbook is things like getting rid of the department of education, national abortion been, renaming the health and human Services Department the department of life, essentially having a handmade menu. In which Robert F Kennedy junior would be attached to in some fashion. That is the reality of what we are staring down as a democracy. Are we going to have bear carcasses in the White House being served for dinner . Thats how you get a brain warm. I really need someone to tell them thats how the work gets in the brain. Carcasses by the side of the road. Dont eat them. Im not a fan of much of what cheney has done with his life. I think it is so indicative of a party that has shrunk itself, has atrophied to the point that even the staunchest most hard line conservatives in the Capital C Sense of the world feel like they have no place there and that tells you that first of all there are huge questions about her Twoparty System, whether we can go on like this even if trump loses, like what becomes of the republican party, what are its values, what does it mean to have a Twoparty System when one party is not interested in governance at all. And when it is protected by an arcane Electoral College that advances it even when it cannot win majority. We have a problem in an anti participation democracy. And the Supreme Court Run by conservatives. I know we have some legal experts like Chris Hayes and Kate Shaw Coming Up. Thats a deep tease for later. Coming up, three iconic women take the stage together for the first time. Jen psaki, Senator Claire Mccaskill and Andrea Mitchell are here with their inside take on the state of the race in this final stretch. Ce in this final stretch.
