Officials were able to track down this individual that has now been identified as ryan routh on the interstate. We should also point out that according to authorities, he was compliant and surrendered pretty quickly. Now this all happened around the 2 00 hour earlier this afternoon. The former president was playing golf. He was somewhere around the fifth and sixth hole. And just to give you an idea of how this all shakes out when he is on the Golf Course. The protocol is you have Secret Service who kind of has the protective bubble around him. And they were at the hole in front of him. Noticed the gunman aiming towards the former president. Thats when agents began pheiffering rounds. Its unclear if the suspect actually fired back, but there were no injuries. The area, as you can imagine, was quickly secured. You had local, state, federal agencies moving in. He was the one who said it is okay, but we also saw with the last Assassination Attempt, that it is a human reaction. First, youre in the moment, but then youre at home with your family. It has time to settle. Obviously the speaker of the house was with him for a couple of hours at le; right . What do we know about Donald Trumps framework, if anything . Yes, he was with her friends when they were holding there for a period of time before going back to maralago. Its not clear at this point. But you said it right in two months ago. The extent to which Law Enforcement, security personnel, including Secret Service are able to effectively keep these individuals safe at a moment where there are clearly individuals who seek to do violent harm to them. Yeah, you can understand that there are serious discussions going on, about where he should be going forward. Donald trump is one of those politicians. Anyone who has ever been to one of his rallies feels it, knows it. He feeds off the audience in a broad way. What is it about the outdoor rallies that he seems to really like so much . You can have a lot of people, especially in the more rural parts of the country. And he is able to find big grassy areas. And he enjoys being outdoors then. But they were quick to not say anything because he also does these stops that are not previously or publicly announced. Of course, we see them do that as he would start in las vegas. Were 51 days out. And you have covered campaigns for a long time too. I think the part in which i go back to grand rapids, michigan, the first rally after the butler, pennsylvania assassination. I was talking to folks who were coming out. They were defiant saying if hes here, were going to be here. This is a part of what makes, you know, The American electoral experience a little different than some other places. Campaigns, they go on for a while. Yet somebody is able to disagree with Donald Trump. Its his Right And Prerogative to be able to go out to speak the words that he desires to speak, and that people are able to safely come and you are that mans worth. This is a moment here where i think understandably a lot of americans are questioning about the security and about those other individuals that may be coming to events like this. I Cant Repeat enough. We hear folks talking about violence, and that america needs to be prepared. That this could get worse, and i dont want to forecast. Thats not our business. But at the same time, i cannot tell you the number of conversations that ive had, but especially over the past year. The folks who resolve what our deep divides are in this nation. I dont know what comes next, but threats made to prosecutors, members on the life of the former President Trump. Even the election workers, vaughn hilliard, Thank You so much. Where we have a close and divided nation, where its going to have to make a big decision with respect to who will be our next president going forward. And there are many other elections, going all the way down to the local level. But its critical right now for those of us on this joint Task Force for sure. I would say, i hope my colleagues across the board to put the partisan politics to the side and to be not only bipartisan, but partisan, figuring out how to address this thing. Make sure we get through Secret Service, all the resources that are needed to provide the type of protection they need to provide. And not only for our candidates. Weve got an international summit coming up. I think its in a week or so, and the Secret Service is going to have duties to provide protection there as well. So it is a challenging time for them. Weve got to make sure we will give them all that they need to get the job done. Well hold them accountable when they fall short. And you were briefed after the last attempt on Donald Trumps life. Do you think the Secret Service has made enough adjustments since then . Do you feel confident in their ability to carry out their jobs . Its fair to say more may need to be done. Theres questions around this incident, for example, that i dont have the answers to yet. Securing a perimeter around this Golf Course, Golf Courses are very big, and its a public Golf Course. But one question im sure thats going to come up, was there more that could have been done to divert this aspect. Thank goodness that secret Service Agent was observant and able to preempt any kind of assassination effort. But its still challenging and concerning to think this guy got that close. And the other part of this too, how did he know that Donald Trump was going to be going Golfing Today . And i think there are some questions around that too. There will be others as well. But i think at the end of the day, we need to make sure the adjustments that need to be made. I know they made some President Biden stepping up the kind of protection that has been made available by the Secret Service to nonpresident ial figures including former President Trump, Vice President harris. So that was a big step in the right direction. But i think its clear more needs to be done. Well have more happen there. The short Run Piece of that might require that you cannot expand the number of the secret Service Agents, and train them. So there will be an increased reliance on other Law Enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. And maybe that might be where we would have to go on the short run. Let me ask you to take off your Congressman Hat for a second and put your Lawyer Hat back on, although im sure you use that one often. You were a states attorney. From an investigative standpoint because unlike the first Assassination Attempt. Obviously there is a suspect in custody. They are already talking about a prosecution. What are the questions you have in that regard . Well, i think the fbis first mission will be to figure out whether there was anybody else, any other figures or parties that are connected to this individual. Was he acting alone . Is this a lone Wolf Scenario . Or is there some sort of other group out here. Because if there are other actors, we need to run it down, and it is important to make sure they do that in front and center. Theyve also got the on going criminal investigation. This guy has been arrested, but he has not been indicted or convicted or anything. They need to make sure they pull that together at the right way. At the same time, you heard Congressman Mock mock. Normally the fbi would do an investigation like this. Pretty much accountable. They wouldnt be putting information out as they go. But because of the unique nature of this scenario, i think they are in a situation where they are going to have to put out more information than they normally would as this moves forward. I think The American people will need to hear more of whats going on there. The other aspect is the coordination with the Secret Service. Yes, the Secret Service, we averted a scenario here where there were no shots. Apparently fired at the president , former President Trump. He wasnt injured. What are the lessons they need to take away from this immediately . As soon as tomorrow, they need to be back out there providing protection. They are going to have to learn to make sure if there are any kind of gaps or challenges or concerns that came out of today, in addition to what was there previously from butler. Theyve got to incorporate that and make the adjustments on the fly to make sure they dont have these kinds of scenarios again. Do you think the last two months of the campaign will need to look different than it has before . Maybe. I have publicly expressed the selection. And there are too many venues, too many rooftops. It was a very big area. Theres so many places where someone could set up to try to create a scenario, where they could cause Harm Or Fire shots. That is not right place. They had a fairground across town, where they had that kind of distance that could be used like they did there. There may be more of a move towards indoor facilities. I know that is difficult for former President Trump, in the reasons stated in your report just a few minutes ago. That might be something we need to do more of. And the other part is, he went out to play golf today. You know, hes a Human Being and he deserves to have a chance to have relaxation. But we might need to think about how we do that sort of aspect as well. So he can address them and they could hear him because that goes to the heart of the election.
