MSNBC Chris Jansing Reports September 17, 2024
Assassination attempt against Donald Trump, said to be stonefaced during his arrest and then again in court. The Secret Service and the fbi now digging into his criminal past, his
potential motive,
and trying to figure out how to stop something like this from happening again. Trump himself wasting no time pointing fingers, blaming democrats in a new interview, insisting the suspect was acting on, quote, rhetoric from the President And
Vice president
despite a lack of evidence supporting that claim. Is there any hope of bringing down the political temperature . And how does all of this impact a nation where the kind of historical Pivot Points that would maybe happen every few years now seem to happen every few weeks . A new generation is confronting political violence that used to be largely contained to grainy photos in
history books.
The toll it is taking on our country, our culture and our collective wellbeing. We start in florida where the Acting Head of the Secret Service is expected to meet with Donald Trump this afternoon in maralago. Just a day after armed gunmen got close enough to potentially threaten his life, the second time thats happened in just over two months. A short time ago we learned the Secret Service, the fbi, and local Law Enforcement will hold a brefg at 4 00 eastern to update their investigation into this apparent attempted assassination. It comes just hours after the suspect,
58yearold ryan routh,
made his first Court Appearance in florida. Our reporter described him as in a, a nonchalant. He faced possession of a Weapon And Possession of a weapon with an obliterated
serial number.
He was hiding in the bushes along trumps Golf Course armed with an Ak47 Rifle and a scope. Less than 500 yards from trump himself. Body Camera Footage of the moment he was arrested was just released by the Martin County
sheriffs office.
Take a look.
Take two steps to your right. Take two steps to your right driver, go straight back. Keep walking. So the issue now is how to keep Donald Trump and the other candidates safe over the last 50 days of this campaign, and in fact, its already factoring into trumps rallies scheduled for wednesday in Long Island with officials holding a Security Briefing for that event as we speak. I want to bring in Nbc Justice and Intelligence Expert Rob dilanian. Frank is former Assistant Director of Counter Intelligence for the fbi and an Msnbc National
Security analyst.
Its good to see
all of you.
Ken, what is the latest on the suspect and the investigation right now . Chris, in addition to the Gun Charges you mentioned, more charges are possible including assaulting a federal agent based on the suspect pointing a gun in the direction of the Secret Service and even the attempted assassination of a protected person. And these charges are coming as were learning more information about routh. He appears to have lived recently in hawaii where his Linkedin Profile said he ran a
shedbuilding company.
He spent many years in North Carolina where public records show he has a long history of runins with the law including Gun Charges and possession of Weapons Of Mass Destruction in 2002. Not sure what that was about. Routh has an extensive Social
Media history.
He said that he supported Donald Trump in 2016 but became disillusioned later calling trump a Buffoon And Writing in 2020, i will be glad when you are gone. He became very passionate about backing ukraine in its war with russia and even traveled to kyiv to sign up to fight in combat. In Video Interviews he sounds fairly articulate and measure you ared but theres evidence of bizarre behavior including a tweet where he invites kim jongun
to hawaii.
In a selfpublished book he urged iran to assassinate trump and blame the former president for the 2021
capitol riots.
So thats what we know. What dont we know that we might reasonably be expected to learn at the Press Conference later this afternoon . What are the questions that might be answered in the first 24 hours . Well, we love to hear but we are unlikely to about the results of forensic examination of all of this guys devices. What was he planning . Were there maps . Like the
butler shooter,
were there also signs of research of other candidates, other protectees of the Secret Service . That would make this a far more generalized mission this guy was on as opposed to a politically driven mission. I think that would be important. When we get down to brass tacks about the logistics on the scene, was he aiming that rifle at the agents . Because they absolutely have the right to defend themselves. How far exactly were the agents from him at the time of this thing happening . How long had he been in the area casing it . Thats often the case. Do they have video of him days or weeks prior at this Golf Course or other Trump Locations . All of that is being studied. Were unlikely to get much of that at the Press Conference but well see how close they are coming to other federal charges. These two Gun Charges are likely place holders until they can get to something more significant. So of course we talked about this yesterday thanks to an alert citizen. They Got Him into custody fairly quickly. When you look at that Body Camera Video that we just showed of the arrest, what do you see that we as civilians might not see . It looked like textbook. The Surrender Couldnt have gone any better. It is. It is a felony car stop. Everyone practices it, rehearses it. They were smart enough. They shut down the highway so they didnt have to worry about anyone trying to drive by. They brought him back safely. They ensured their own safety, like i said, its a standard thing that they get him in cuffs. Now theyre holding on to the vehicle because they dont know if anyone else is in the vehicle. Theyre going to search it very methodically by taking angles on the vehicle. So theyre s. W. A. T. Guys. They train with it. It was again a Textbook Felony Car stop. What do you imagine is happening with that car right now . Well, again, all the Search Warrants are going out. They wont take the chances about writing up the proper Search Warrants with the vehicle. Theyre going to figure out where he was living. Even as a Hotel
Room or anything
along those lines and Theyll Start trying to get some of the things that frank talked about. Was he communicating . Unfortunately, weve seen in the School Shootings and the last trump Assassination Attempt that they were communicating on encrypted apps. It is a Blind Spot for the government in order to get it. Im working now with a Software Company that can capture it legally. All these chats on
discord and telegram,
Thats Evidence out there that these people are communicating that the evidence, the government is blind on. So getting that, getting the legality into how to get these apps so we can look for this dangerous, violent chats. Frank, in the aftermath of the first Assassination Attempt there was a lot of criticism of the head of the Secret Service for never going to the location. Not the case here. The Acting Director headed to
florida yesterday.
When it all started this morning, he just walked to the Golf Course. What is he looking for specifically . So youre right. The prior director took a lot of heat essentially for not having a full grasp of the facts when she testified. A lot of people took as unwillingness to answer questions. I saw it as just not knowing what had happened. So the Acting Director on the scene, a veteran agent on top of things. Hell be looking for what could have been done better. He wants a sense of distance and whether a greater perimeter or more bodies or drones would have helped mitigate this situation. He testified on The Hill after butler that they were now going to utilize a lot more drones. Well, he said they were going to do that at outdoor events. Clearly, they didnt see a Golf Course as an outdoor event. I think well see that change. So rob, officials say he had that
ak47style rifle.
The Washington Post showed the pictures to a
firearms expert.
And looking at the photo provided by officials said it more closely looks like an Sks Rifle fitted for a 7. 62 cartridges. Add all that up. What does it tell you about what he may have been planning . And maybe more pointedly, what he was capable of . Well, the sks and the ak47 are one and the same family of weapons. There are slight differences in it. The sks is like a standard rifle. The ak is more automatic. They are in the same family. They fire the same round. It is a heavier round than the ar15. It doesnt have quite the same Accuracy And Ability to reach out as far but its definitely deadlier. Hes definitely looking at something. He equipped with it a scope which now means hes looking for a better Sight Picture to shoot out a longer distance instead of
iron sights.
Hes probably out at a range. Even on a public range people could say i remember that guy. He was out there doing this. We see that a lot. And thats probably what he was doing when he got intercepted by the secret Service Agent. He was probably sighting it in. He was probably waiting until trump walked into a good Ambush Sight for him to shoot and the secret Service Agent interrupted him. Let me ask you looking forward, some of the changes that might be made and the concerns that were already hearing from former agents, from other Security Experts about copycats, about what may happen in the final 50 days. Back in july after that first attempt, the thenacting Director Cheadle testified that Secret Service has to take Open Carry rules into account as they continue to develop
security plans.
Look, there is no Open Carry in florida but there are in a number of key Battleground States where youll see the candidates go again and again and again including North Carolina, arizona, nevada. So how does that change how they look at any events . Particularly if there are outdoor events in those states . We really are at an Inflection Point in our society. Certainly within protective services. That is 31 states allowing Open Carry. Allowing citizens to walk around essentially displaying, brandishing a weapon. And then add the fact that we have 20 Million ar15s in the United States. That combination makes it virtually impossible to guarantee protection for openair events. I would recommend a brief timeout for the Secret Service with regard to outdoor events and candidates until they have a clear plan that involves aerial surveillance, likely lots of drones, and an injection of resources from hsi, Homeland Security investigations, and a Budget Enhancement for more local officers to augment the protection for this
election period.
They have to get their act together. They dont have a lot of time to do it. Thank you all so much.
Coming up

Im Coming Up rewards once available to the few are now accessible to the many. Earn points for travel with credit one bank, and live large. Donald trump is now laying claim for the Assassination Attempt against him. Its not at the Secret Service or the shooter. In a new interview with Fox News digital, he said the suspect believed the rhetoric of Biden And Harris and he acted on it. Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at when i am the one who is going to save the country and they are the ones destroying the country. Both from the inside and out. Now, he has said something similar before. For example, after the first attempt on his life in july. I think to a certain extent its Bidens Fault and Harriss Fault and im the opponent. Look, they were weaponizing government against me. They werent too interested in my
health and safety.
Now there are many examples of how heated political rhetoric can be dangerous from
January 6th
through the attempt on Paul Pelosis life. Donald trump did not provide any proof for his claim today. We do not know the
shooters motivation.
What we do know, its all creating an escalating challenge for the Secret Service. An agency already under pressure. With us, former republican government
john kasich,
an msnbc
political analyst.
What more can you tell us about how trumps campaign is handling all of this . I think you put it the right way. We can tell everybody what we do know. A lot of facts can be true at one time. For Donald Trump, in just the last few minutes, he put out a new social Media Post that placed that blame on democrats saying in part, quote, because of this communist red rhetoric, the bullets are flying and it will only get worse. For Donald Trump we are told that his Campaign Schedule will continue to move forward as originally planned this week. That includes here from his
maralago estate.
He was going to take part in an Xspaces Crypto Event that he is launching before he goes to campaign Rallies Tomorrow in michigan. Wednesday in new york. He will make a speech in washington, d. C.
On thursday.
Then he will make his way to North Carolina for a Campaign Rally on saturday. This for Donald Trump is different than how he responded in the immediate aftermath of the butler, pennsylvania Assassination Attempt. You saw overnight Donald Trump posting fight, fight, fight. When i said many things can be true at once, let me stick to the facts. Donald trump just one week ago knocked assault of Paul Pelosi inside his home. Hes called for the pardoning of
January 6th
defendants who assaulted Police Officers, and for Donald Trump, it was in Las Vegas at the late Friday
Night rally
where he called Kamala Harris the true threat to democracy. Hes talked repeatedly about the countrys ceasing to exist if he does not win. We are at a moment 50 days away where the republican nominee could have nearly been killed yesterday at the hands of this assassin. For Donald Trump there is an understanding, and through his Campaign Staff that tries to ensure his own safety and his ability to go out on the Campaign Trail, there is a reckoning that the acting secret Service Director is on the ground engaged in conversations about how to ensure his campaign at a moment that there is not an urging from Donald Trump to tone down the rhetoric outside of calling on democrats to calm down what is their Campaign Messaging that Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. It is not clear exactly where this goes. We know there are 50 days until the general election and there are two attempted assassinations on the republican nominee. How important do you think it is what a president , a past president , candidates say right now . Can they help bring down what has been a very heightened tone, and some would say dangerously so. Well, you know, its just, when i heard this yesterday, i was really surprised. As i talked to people who are in the business of protecting public figures, they werent surprised which is disappointing to hear. Chris, you and i both know, the rhetoric is so heated. Not just by the candidates themselves. Sometimes it is. But by those people who surround them. When you have people who are fundamentally not very stable. They hear that and unfortunately, they may be, thats what may have happened here. So when they hear something that represents a threat to the country or whatever, then you can have things happen to take us
out of control.
How do they campaign . They want to go out and campaign. And frankly, they need more agents. They need more secret Service Agents. They need to be able to support local Law Enforcement. Local Law Enforcement who is trained in this. They can be very good at being an addition to what the Secret Service has. And theyll have to be far more careful. I dont think youll see these candidates deciding they wont go. It is just that it has to be a full court to make sure that all the surroundings are under control. I actually played golf with president obama and John Boehner here a number of years ago. They shut all the Golf Course down where they were. They were just everywhere. And it sounds like what happened, trump is a former president , not the current president. They didnt have the amazing security they can have. Theyll have to step it up and deliver that. And it is hard to find more agents right now. But empower local Law Enforcement as well. Yeah. And i want to reiterate that we dont know anything about a motive here. He seemed to be, from what we know of him, very angry about any number of things. But monica, like most
potential motive, and trying to figure out how to stop something like this from happening again. Trump himself wasting no time pointing fingers, blaming democrats in a new interview, insisting the suspect was acting on, quote, rhetoric from the President And

There is a constant reevaluation of realtime Security Needs for Kamala Harris. That, of course, is only augmented when you talk about her being the democratic nominee and with all the travel she has ahead of her in these last 50 days or so. Thats certainly a very real, very heightened consideration that theyll be taking into account. Now, im told in terms of her robust travels, this week as an example, theyre not shifting anything. But there are always moments if Theres Something they dont like or want to shift, they reserve the right to do that. We know shes in washington. Shell be in washington in wednesday as well with a couple of events and appearances. Then shell be On The Road tuesday in pennsylvania. She will travel On Thursday to michigan and friday to wisconsin. We dont expect this pace to let up at any point. She will be constantly traveling. Constantly On The Road. We know that after the butler, Pennsylvania Attempt on former President Trump, you did see some of these changes publicly. There could be shifts that play out that we arent as aware of
behind the scenes. That ballistic glass going up at some of the outdoor events, that is one example of something they added to be sure to add an extra literal layer of protection there.
Thats something you could continue to see. Im told it is a very dynamic situation. A very tense situation in terms of the Threat Levels and the vird and thats why the Vice President and the president are stressing so intensely to try to lower the temperature on this political rhetoric. And theyre certainly calling that out where they see it as irresponsible. Thank you very much. I do want to tell you, we just got a statement from the attorney general
merrick garland, as you know. Former President Trump has often blamed bidenharris. This is a statement from doj. Call today asking what more needs to be done to protect president ial candidates . Take a listen to the bipartisan leaders of the congressional Task Force formed after the first Assassination Attempt of former President Trump. Reporter even if they did follow the procedures and they do what theyre supposed to do, we are in an environment of heightened threats across the board. Right after
July 13th incident of President Trump, president biden ordered the full complement of security on both Vice President harris and former President Trump at the same level that a president would receive. So that is the level theyre receiving. The question is, is that enough in the environment that were in . I think were at a point, it is not about republicans and democrats. This is about america. Weve reached a point where the rhetoric has
hit a fevered pitch. Joining me now, ally vitally and
jake sherman. Good to have both of you. What are you hearing from members on The Hill . Well, theyre not back yet. On the
house side, theyll come back tomorrow. On the
senate side, a few hours from now. They are speaking out of this latest Assassination Attempt of former President Trump and they are being outspoken in bipartisan fashion about the ways in which political violence has no role in
american politics. But on the republican side, we are seeing members go a step further, including speaker
mike johnson, who had several recommendations for what the 50 someodd days should look like from a
security perspective. Listen to him this morning. President trump needs the most coverage of anyone. Hes the most attacked. The most threatened. Even probably more than when he was in the
oval office. So we are demanding in the house that he has every asset available and we will make more available if necessary. I dont think it is a Funding Issue of the i think it is a
manpower allegation. And certainly weve had other experts on our air from the Secret Service talking about the issue of manpower and how they are typically stretch so thin. Not just because of the ongoing president Ial Contest but in a few weeks you have the u. N. General assembly and all the foreign leaders coming into new York City are also in part protected by the Secret Service. So manpower might be a question here. Certainly thats one of the questions members and other experts in The Field will have in the waning weeks of the president ial election. Then you have to remember, there is a Task Force already investigating from a congressional perspective what happened in butler, pennsylvania. Those members have been on Television Today talking about this latest instance and speaking about the fact theyre not yet sure whether or not the Butler Investigation will also then come to include what happened at trumps Golf Course over the weekend. Theyre waiting on that. Hoping for a decision this week. And we are likely to see a hearing from that committee next week, the following week, as the members come back to congress with more questions than they have answers. At least at this point, chris. So the secret Services Budget nearly doubled over the last decade. It went from 1. 8 million to nearly 3. 2 billion. The Secret Service needs an additional supplemental to help fund what theyre trying to do now. It will be hard to get new agents to come in and train in this 50 something days left. Thats not a possibility. I mean, that is a problem, right . The clock is ticking. Its not like you can get agents out of behind the air. What actions do you think might be realistic when they come back from break . Those arent necessarily in conflict, right . Just because there arent secret Service Agents. Youre right, they are highly trained professionals. You cant just pull them off the street and put on a president
ial detail. Theyre very stretched thin. They have four candidates running around the country who all have secret Service Protection in a threatened environment. So it seems like living that there will be a request for more money from the Secret Service because thats what washington does. They throw money at problems and they think more money will be able to solve this. Whether or not thats true, i dont know the answer to that. Number two, this committee that ali mentioned, this Task Force investigating the first trump Assassination Attempt is really going to turn into a Secret Service select committee. This will turn into a committee investigating the practices and the tactics and the management of the Secret Service after these two instances which are incredibly alarming, especially for a former president and the republican nominee for the presidency in just 50 days. So congress has the power of the purse. They can give more money. They can give suggestions. And i assume theyll do that over the coming days and weeks. And i can tell you, in my conversations with the republican and democratic leadership this morning, there is not a lot of confidence in the Secret Service as they seek to protect all these folks during a
campaign season. And as ali mentioned, with the u. N. General assembly Coming Up in a matter of weeks. So 3 Billion again is what they have now. Even if they get more funding. Even if, jake, we see that these investigations go on and, by the way, there will be an investigation of this one, according to
floridas governor,
ron desantis, in addition to whatever congress may do and hover they figure that out. Will that be enough to satisfy trump allies on The Hill . No. Its not. I dont think thats likely. They see something deeper at play here which is, in their estimation, this is all a result of heated rhetoric on the Campaign Trail from democrats. There is a political element. And will then there is the very real practical element. Which is, there are more people who are protected. People who are, this is a heated environment. By the way, this is on a
micro level. We also have 535 members of congress running around the country. Most of whom, almost all of whom, do not have protection. So our public officials are more threatened than ever and many are running around the country with absolutely no protection going through airports and Public Spaces with, you know, on their own. And thats a huge problem as well. And Gabby Giffords and
steve scalise, in just pure medical terms, are lucky to be alive after they were shot outdoors, Public Spaces. So the complexities of it boggle the mind. Thank you. Still to come, the Brand New poll numbers were now seeing showing just how tight this race is. What voters are telling Nbc News about the state of our union. With the Vice President currently ahead of Donald Trump, 5246 , a 6point Difference that is outside the margin of error. The data came in before the apparent Assassination Attempt on former President
Trump yesterday, but it is still the, it is only the second major poll to put harris in the lead that is outside the margin of error in the 2024 Campaign Cycle so far. Here to talk about it, the republican strategist and former spokesman is here. A New York Times Reporter And
Msnbc contributor. So this poll obviously, the second poll in a row shows theyre barely outside the margin of error. When do folks start looking at it and say its a trend . Right. I think they need to be looking at the Swing State polls rather than these national polls. That shouldnt be surprising. Biden, and going back to 2016, Hillary Clinton won the national popular vote. Wasnt even close. Millions of votes separated trump and the democratic nominees. I think what youre seeing in the Swing States, what is becoming increasingly clear even after all the big events, shootings, debates, that it remains very, very tight. Even though Kamala Harris had a debate. No one would question that she really, really cleaned up there.
Won debate doesnt mean a
won election. So i know youve got connections. You talked to folks. What are you hearing . Because its hard really to sort of discern what all these polls mean when so much happens so fast. Give us a real sense of how this new Polling Squares with what youre hearing about this race. Well, i think what weve learned in the last 24 hours is that debate is ancient history and were moving forward now. I think if youre the trump campaign, there is a lot of positive aspects that have been true and remain true going forward. Abc had a poll out four years ago that had Donald Trump down 10 points. He is consistently polling better in Battleground States and nationally when it comes to these polls that he did in 2016 and 2020. I think you can look at consistently, he polls at least 7, 8 points, sometimes double digits higher on the economy which is the number one concern among voters. He also polls double digits higher when it come to immigration which is probably the second most important issue to voters out there. So there are a lot of things i think the republicans are hanging their hat on. This is not a bad place to be considering where we were in 2016 and 2020. If youre the Harris Campaign, there is this little nugget hanging out there. Donald trump has the ability to bring out nontraditional voters. These are people who dont answer Polling Calls or show up, if youre the Harris Campaign, that is probably something that keeps them up at night. I dont think Theres Anything who is experienced on either side who thinks they have a 100 take on who will win here. Your colleague at the time just posted, i think, in the last hour, a new analysis. This latest look at the polls that have been coming out. It looked like a near repeat of the 2020 election. Based on voters that you talked to i know all the time. Sources youre speaking to and frankly, what
we saw yesterday. What are the chances that anything holds . Everything feels more like a real Snap Shot in time. And yesterday, look what happened. Rather than trying to predict what kind of impact the attempted assassination might have on the race overall, i think that incident is just a reminder of how volatile the country is right now and how there can be one incident, one eruption that unsettles the election at any given moment. Weve seen this time and time again in the
trump era. There are these unpredictable
news cycle, cataclysmic events and anything can happen between now and
election day. Its not even october and we havent had our October Surprise yet. I wouldnt be surprised if we do indeed get one. Lets not forget that Kamala Harris has only had six weeks, seven weeks or so, to sell herself to voters. We do sometimes forget that. Right . As strategists have told me, shes famous but shes unknown. Shes presenting her case, her vision for the country in a clearer, more detailed way since the debate and even before then. People still need to be sold on her in these Swing States. The voters, the relative few who are still on the fence. If you look at the latest New York Times polling, 28 of the country, the likely electorate, said they need to know more about her. I think thats her challenge over the next few weeks. 50 days is all thats left. Thank you both so much. Coming up, political violence in america is nothing new. Now that a new generation is taking it on, what lessons can we draw from the past in order to move forward . In our next hour, will the candidate who loves rallies and talking about big crowds be forced to make changes to his schedule with just as i said, 50 days left in the race . Youre watching Chris Jansing reports only on msnbc.

Joe biden speaking right now. Lets listen. The subject is in custody. An Acting Head of the Secret Service is determining whether any further adjustments need to be made to ensure the safety of our former president. Let me just say, there is no, and i mean this from the bottom of my heart. No place for political violence in america. None. Zero. Never. Ive always condemned political violence. I always will in america. In america we resolve our differences peacefully at the
ballot box. Not the end of a gun. America has suffered too many times the tragedy of an
assassins bullet. It solves nothing and just tears the country apart. We must do everything we can to prevent it and never give it any oxygen. Folks, it is an honor to recognize excellence in our nation. I see excellence every single day. I see it this weekend. The congressional the president of the United States is speaking at the conference of the national
hbcu week. Obviously, you heard his comments and very forceful comments, by the way, following the apparent Assassination Attempt. The second one on Donald Trump, before we went to air, he commended commended the actions for political violence and made, again, that forceful statement that he has always stood up strongly against political violence, and that comes perhaps maybe an hour after we heard that Donald Trump was blaming joe biden, Kamala Harris and their rhetoric for what happened to him yesterday without any proof. Again, we will say we do not know anything about the Motive And Background or any of the things that might indicate any possible motive from the suspect. While the president is speaking, and well continue to listen to him, we should say that here we are, right . Once again, an apparent Assassination Attempt against formerPresident Trump on the front page of every major newspaper in this country. It reminds us of
john kennedy,
gerald ford,
ronald reagan, all president s targeted by assassins. But for a younger generation, those moments exist only in grainy images from long ago. This is new for them. Joining me now, douglas brinkley, president ial Historian And Professor of history at
rice university.
Thanks for being on, doug. You know, for those who remember these past Assassination Attempts, i think actually it can be triggering. We didnt even mention the turbulence of 1968, Rfk And
Mlk assassinated, vietnam protests. What lessons can we draw from previous moments of heightened political Rhetoric And Violence in the u. S. . Well, chris, you grew up in fair port, ohio, and youre about half an hour away from james
garfields tomb, who was assassinated. You are about an hour away from the tomb of
william mckinley, two president s slain, and School Children go on buses and they try to understand these dark,
violent moments in american history. But, alas, except for teachers and families willing to visit those sites, we are getting our violence via tiktok, youtube, you know, bytes and clips. We have all seen the Zapruder Film go through our minds many times over. With Donald Trump shot in butler, pennsylvania, that image with fight, fight, fight thats the Heart And Soul of the
trump campaign. This in florida is disturbing because this Wouldbe Assassin had about 12 hours around the Golf Course, hanging out in camouflage looking to get his open moment. Yes, it is a terrifying prospect that we run these twoyear long president ial campaigns and we are getting down now to 50 days and theres a feeling across the land that our candidates are vulnerable to
violence and assassination. The Wall Street Journal today, doug, used a striking phrase at least it was striking to me. It described this apparent attempt as another warning about our deranged politics. Talk about the Role Leadership has played and can play in moving the conversation in a more positive direction. Bring down the temperature. I was thinking not of a politician but, for example, of a Jackie Kennedy and how the country rallied around her in a time of crisis. How do we bring down the rhetoric . Boy, what a great question.
Jackie kennedy was amazing, what she did. She did it with such Grace And
Dignity and selfconfidence, yet she was mournful until really the end of her life about the loss of her husband. I thought
melania trump, you know, her comment after butler and before the Milwaukee Convention was trying to set a tone that was useful, but every day it is going to start tonight. Donald trump will be talking about crypto, he will be talking about this. The Harris Campaign will say democracy is on the ballot and it will be the end of our country if they do win, and it ratchets it up with the Social Media environment. I think president biden said something, but it has to be an action,
executive action. We need more Secret Service now. If need be, in the next 50 days have National Guard around big outdoor rallies or former Police Officers that can be quickly vetted to do
perimeter work. But it is unacceptable that were getting these kind of, you know, murderers lurking this close to president ial candidates. Weve got to do something. We have 50 days to do it, and so i think the
white house, working with congress, needs to come up with something quick for that period, and then later maybe look at how to expand the Secret Service. You know, you mentioned my hometown, and i did grow up in ohio where we were taught every single year of
grade school, Ohio Has is the birthplace of more president s than any other state in the union, and we were extremely proud of that. I wonder if little kids these days would be proud of that, too, given the way the tone of the rhetoric that we see today.
Douglas brinkley, it is always good to have you on the program. Thank you. Thank you. In our next hour of Chris Jansing reports, we showed you the Body Cam Video of the moment the suspect was arrested. Now we have a new interview with the sheriff about what happened right after they took him into custody.
