I cannot believe it. We are now just 50 days out from the election. I do not know about you sitting at home or wherever you may watch, the ground is kind of never felt shakier beneath my feet, just 50 days out from an election that it does right now. There is a lot happening all of the time. The days do sometimes feel like weeks and weeks feel like years. And the stakes just feel impossibly high because they are. Tonight we will do our best to make sense of this moment. We are all living in together with two very smart and sensible people. Elizabeth warren and jon ossoff are both going to be here at this table and i cannot wait to talk with both of them. First, i want to get you up to speed about where we are right now. Starting with the fact that for the second time in two months, authorities are investigating what the fbi is calling an apparent assassination attempt. Here is what we have been able to piece together so far. Yesterday afternoon a secret service agent posted at trump's florida golf club spotted a subject armed with what he perceived to be a rifle. On the public side of the golf course perimeter fence. Less than 400 yards away from trump and where he was playing golf. Phone records later show that the same guy had been waiting in that vicinity for about 12 hours. The secret service agent fired multiple shots forcing the subject to flee until he was pulled over in every on i95. No shots fired except by the secret service. The suspect is in custody today that suspect, ryan wesley routh, appeared in court and was charged with two federal gun crimes. There is a still a lot we do not know and lots of important questions about whether or not the secret service is up to the task of protecting trump or anyone else they are responsible for right now. For his part, trump initially reacted to all of this with a bit of gratitude. Thanking the secret service and law enforcement for the incredible job they did keeping him safe. But it did not take long for him to. . When he did, he really pivoted. Donald trump told fox news that the rhetoric of president biden and vice president kamala harris is, quote, causing me to be shot at referencing their past threats, past comments calling him a threat to democracy in the very next sentence he said, they are people that want to destroy our country. It is called the enemy from within. They are the real threat. He also posted your truth show show that because of the rhetoric on the left, bullets are flying and it will only get worse! he posted again the ominous refrain, fight, fight, fight. In all capital letters, linking to his fundraising page. I think with all of that i just went through and in a moment like this, it is really important to just take a step back for a moment and acknowledge that multiple things can be true at the same time. The threats against trump are a as they are against any person public life or office. They are unacceptable and be condemned by everyone. That is true. Trump, himself, is also doing very little to calm things down and basically blaming his political opponents. That is also true that he is doing that. We cannot ignore that second piece and we should not ignore it. We also cannot ignore that donald trump's own charged rhetoric is having a real world impact. Just look at what is happening right now, right this moment in springfield, ohio. Ever since trump elevated a completely racist like about haitian immigrants eating pets to 67 maple 67 million people watching the debates. Troopers will be stationed throughout the springfield city school district as a precaution that comes after two more elementary schools were evacuated today adding to week of bomb and shooting threats. Clark state college in springfield is also closing its campuses and moving all of the classes online this week. Multiple hospitals have been forced into lockdown and members of the haitian community in springfield are hiding in their homes. Those are all very real consequences of a very fake story. It has been promoted and propagated by donald trump and his running mate, j. D. Vance, who represents the people of ohio, including springfield. Talking about what is happening in springville and talk about the impact of trump's words, it is not incitement of violence against timbered talking about his very long history of inflammatory rhetoric is not incitement of violence either. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. At the end of the day, no elected official should be threatened. No american city should be terrorized. If you are having a hard time figure out how to hold all of this in your head at one time, you are not alone. The second assassination attempt in two months and the impact of trump's own words on a city like springville, his long history of dangerous rhetoric, we have to hold them in our heads at the same time. I get the struggle but we have to. My first guest tonight said something that stuck with me as i was grappling with a version of this exact same question after the assassination attempt on trump in butler, pennsylvania, just nine weeks ago. President biden and rightfully so is calling for the country to end political violence. It is time to cool it down. Do you think that this changes the state of the campaign and do you believe these candidates will be somewhat different going forward into the general election? let us start with the first one about what it means to cool it down. In my view, cooling it down does not mean not about things that are powerfully important. Cooling things down does not mean ignoring these important issues. Toning things down does not mean turning a blind eye. We are just 50 days out from the election. Politics should be about arguments and ideas about contrasting choices. And right now, one candidate is saying there is no place for violence against anyone anywhere. Another is saying there is no place for violence against me. Dreaming that is democratic senator elizabeth warren of massachusetts. Senator, it is so great to see you. I really have thought a lot about what you said. I know a lot of people watching or trying to grapple with this. Many things happening at the same time. Trying to understand this moment. I just went there and gave my sense at this moment. What did i miss? what did i get wrong there? i think you got it exactly right. We are fighting for our democracy. We are fighting for a set of issues. We are fighting for a woman to make her own choices about abortion and a family to make its own choices about ivf. We are fighting for bringing down prices for working families. These are serious issues. Donald trump wants to go one way. Kamala harris wants to go in a very different direction. Donald trump has a concept of a plan. Kamala harris has real plans to do that. Things that are serious. You put them on the table and you test them and talk about their strengths and weaknesses and who would be helped and hurt. Part of what is happening here is donald trump would like nothing better than to shut down the comparison over issues. Face it because when we talk about what is happening in america today, for example on reproductive freedom with people making their own decisions, we live in america now. 40% of all women live in states that effectively ban abortion. This means that for these women, they walk into an emergency room in the middle of a miscarriage. The doctor can examine someone and say, i know what is coming. You are not near enough death now. Go to the parking lot and hemorrhage for a few more hours and then come back and maybe i will be able to give you the medical treatment that you need. Doctors instead of thinking what my patient needs, they think about, could i be criminally prosecuted if i miss guess how close my patient is to death when i go ahead and give her the abortion that she needs to save her life? the reason i emphasize something like that is donald trump does not want to talk about that at all. J. D. Vance does not want to talk about that. Republicans running for office do not want to talk about that. Make no mistake, it is on the ballot. Donald trump and j. D. Vance are coming for abortion fans. It is nationwide. Kamala harris and the democrats are saying, we will put roe v. Wade, axis two ivf right back in and protect everyone in the country. That is a clear comparison. Donald trump and j. D. Vance, they have to find something else to talk about. Though of what they can. There is no question about it. The choices which are so clear are really that must be hitting them right now. One of the things that struck me is they're trying to change the subject. You hear this fight, fight, fight, chant. Which you heard trump do right after the shooting in butler. We saw that, once again on true social. That does scare me a little bit. How do you feel about that? i am a fighter. I have written books that talk about fighting. I mean with words. That is all that this means. In a democracy, we need to go back and forth with our words. We need to be able to disagree to put those issues in front of the american people, that is how we inform people about our positions. That is how we get back in and make a decision that the majority of americans want. It is only by talking about this. That is very, very different from a man who incited an insurrection. A man who prefers to his political rivals as berman. A man who has said it just in recent days that he wants to lock up the people who do not agree with him. That is a very, very different kind of approach, not just in politics but to democracy and one that ultimately does put our democracy at risk and puts us all at risk. Just as you stated, i want him to be fully protected i want kamala harris to be fully protected. No doubt about that. We have to keep this space opened to talk about the issues and to draw the contrast with donald trump. He is responsible for the things that he has said in the same way kamala harris is responsible for what she has said and every plan she has put out there. For every idea she has put into the public space. We need to keep this open so people talk and people are able to make a decision. Do you want a candidate who is embracing nationwide abortion ban? he wants to lie about and pretend because you know it is unpopular. But won't say, he would be to an abortion ban. He is still going to wink and nod at his extremist groups. Or do you want someone who puts it out there? and says, give me a chance, as kamala harris does, i will sign protection for access to abortion and ivf into law. It is a huge, huge difference between them. I mentioned springfield because i think it is so important to understand the facts and the impact of language. This is a huge difference between the candidates. I wanted to play something that j. D. Vance said about springfield and talk to you briefly about that too. The american media totally ignored this stuff until donald trump and i start talk about cats. It was not just a meme. The american people needs to pay attention to the suffering and that is what i will do. I raise that because people are being terrorized in springfield, ohio. Their haitians huddled in their homes. He just said he is making up stories. This is a distraction but it is having a huge realworld consequence and impact. Think about what he just said. He said he will bite to get attention. Once someone has said that, then you cannot believe anything that they say. He will lie to get attention. If it hurt other people, if the consequences of that lie are to put people at risk, evidently, j. D. Vance just does not care. Because he is hopeful that it will advance donald trump and j. D. Vance and give them one more opportunity to win in this election. I talked to people, we have of vibrant haitian community. Third largest in the country, i think. Yes, we do. I have talked to people in our haitian community. I have conversation on saturday with one of my dear friends, who is describing what it is like to have to tell little children, whose parents are haitian and growing up in america and try to explain what is going on what they are hearing in the news what it is like for seniors, who have come here. They have fled at times of great stress. They have tried to build secure lives. They watched something unfold, this kind of ugliness and hatred. Fingerpointing. All because of a lie but a lie they can do enormous damage. That is the kind of thing that tells you who people are. For this one, once again, you think about the contrast, who do j. D. Vance and donald trump fight for? nobody but themselves. Kamala harris/tim walz, they are out there fighting for all of our families. Not a few or a subset but all of our families. Trump cannot think a way to put his value into action, the problem is that when he and other republican leaders produce plans with actual details, they horrify the american people. Senator warren is still with me. There is a lot to be said but you are a policy walk and nerd. I mean that in the best way possible. What is one horrifying thing they do not want people to know out there? that they have already tried to repeal the affordable care act just so everyone remembers, that means repeal the law that says everyone with a pre existing condition cannot be discriminated against. Anyone out there with a child of a heart anomaly or anyone who has had any kind of medical condition, donald trump was to say they can discriminate against you. Keeping 26yearolds on your policy and millions of people, literally, millions of people across the country who have access to healthcare now because they have insurance through the affordable care act. Donald trump does not just say, i will work something out. I still remember because i was in the senate in 2017 when they got it all the way through the house to repeal the affordable care act. Then they all went over to the white house and celebrated, taking away healthcare from millions of people but they still had to get it through the senate. You may remember that night. Kamala harris, the senator, was on the floor. We were so nervous. You could not sit down, the democrats. We are just pacing. We understand the republicans have the votes. If they stick with donald trump, american will lose healthcare all across this country. It was john mccain, the last vote, when he did the thumbs down and saved healthcare for millions of americans by one vote. Don't tell me that donald trump does not have a plan. He set it plain as day just last year. His plan is to get rid of the affordable care act. Understand, that is not all of his plan. His plan is also to get rid of the $35 insulin and the $2000 cap on what seniors are spending to get rid of the negotiation with medicare with the big drug companies.
