I would say that is strong evidence that the left needs to tone down the rhetoric. Two Assassination Attempts, attempts in as many months. I think it is time to say to the democrats, to the media, to everybody that has been attacking this man and trying to censure this man going on 10 years, cut it out or you are going to get somebody killed. J. D. Vance wants people to believe it is the Lefts Rhetoric that motivated these attacks. Donald trump has taken it a step further directly blaming Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for the attacks. In an interview with Fox News digital, trump said somewhat, they use highly inflammatory language. I can use it too. Far better than they can. But i dont. Now, so far there is no public evidence to support the claim that rhetoric from Harris Or Biden was in any way implicated in either of these attacks. In fact, trumps first assassin did not have a political motive. He was remembered in his community as a conservative and he explored opportunities to attack president biden. The latest alleged assassin does have a history of political an mist against trump. Does not mean he was a democrat. Social Media Profile says he was Disillusions Trump and then supported Nikki Haley and ramaswamy. Not a democrat or a republican for that matter. Now, there is still a lot that we dont know about these a parent attempts on Trumps Life and what might and might not have motivated the gunman. But trump and Vances Concern about inflammatory language is fairly disengenious. Sort of the literal definition of inflammatory rhetoric. Despite all of that, along with reported insistence that there is no truth to trumps claim, Trump And Vance wont give it up. This week j. D. Vance appeared to admit that he and trump created this story but still sticking to it. The american people totally ignored there stuff until Donald Trump and i started talking about cat memes. If i have to create story that is what i am going to do. You just said this is a story that you created . Yeah. So eating Dogs Thing is not true. We are creating, we are creating it comes from firsthand accounts from my constituents. We are creating a story. We are creating the american media focusing on it. I am going to try to unpack that a little bit. I think j. D. Advances trying to say he is fabricating a story about immigrants so that the media will focus on immigrants. You know that microphone in front of you . You need to understand it at a deep level how much your words have meaning. It means that you have been invested with trust, to be responsible in the way you use your words much less how you conduct yourself. And and when you have been and then seek to be the president of the united states of america. That is what it looks like when a politician considering the impact of their words. Blaming, the way you deescalate political violence is not blaming the other side for political violence. Right. That is not how you deescalate. And, frankly, we can take this entire show and just run clips of the things that have been said by both Donald Trump and j. D. Vance that are incredibly with ideas of political violence. Yes. You know. It will be bloody. Fight like hell. Going back to 2016. Trump used to encourage people to hit people at his rallies. If that does not work. I am proud of Joe Bidden and Kamala Harris. They called Donald Trump. They said they were glad he was okay. I think they still have to continue to point out the differences between these two campaigns. It is incumbent upon us to make everyone realize that one is darkness and rounding up people and putting their political opponents in jail and the other is, you know what, we will try to help you and your family. We are going to try to make your life better. We will try to expose your opportunity. By the way, Isnt America a wonderful place . That is a contrast she tried to draw on stage in public discourse, in advertisements. I was struck, eugene, i dont know how you felt or how it was in the room but the tenure of the Vice President s response to your question and the way she almost seemed sad, genuinely, that this is what trump is doing to the country. Almost the kind of resignation that he is not going to change and sort of encouragement to just turn the page. How was it on stage and what was your sense of her mood . I think that is right. I have covered her the entire time she has been Vice President. I never seen her react to a question like that. A question or the questioner but it was the moment that we are living in. And, she has not spoken about springfield. We were thinking about the topics we wanted to work on and when i was writing the question really i wanted to hear what she had to say. A policy that she felt like the federal government could use to help communities and she took the opportunity to do something, i think, that people wanted to hear from her. That is kind of talk about this moment in history. Talk about what it is like as someone who, one is a current leader, and to continue to be a leader as we move forward and she did not even really say trumps name, right . It was clear what she was talking about. She, you know, was talking about the kids, she is obsessed with kids. She is talking about the concerns that she has about the way that this kind of rhetoric and these tropes as she said more than once, are dangerous for people, right . Because at The End of the day the Conspiracy Theories have no basis of fact, right . And you played the clip of senator j. D. Vance and him saying he created the story. Or he created it but he did pair it and Donald Trump did it on the Debate Stage. A lot of democrats who asked me, a lot of requests for questions as you can imagine with these opportunity comes up, and a lot of democrats were wondering why she did not say anything on the Debate Stage, right . So, i knew that was something that people even within her party were wondering how she felt about what was going on in springfield. And, it is going to continue. So, this is not going anywhere. She will have to continue to make these same points because, both in springfield and in general the racist Conspiracy Theories about people in this country are not going anywhere. Especially dark skinned democrats. I thought she did something that was important when she was asked about the rhetoric. She did not necessarily focus on trump. She talked about the little children in springfield who are going into school for picture day. She talked about them being dressed up to get their photos taken and that they could not do it because Donald Trump and j. D. Vance was spreading lies. That is one of the things about this conversation it does not exist in the abstract. It is about real lives, not just the powerful people in the crosshairs but the normal, everyday people without secret Service Protection that did not ask for this that are caught up in what trump created. I wonder if you think that is, as setting aside the Retor Rhetorical Look at it, he is costing all of us. I think it is helpful. I think when Donald Trump made the famous line they are eating the dogs, which will go down in president ial debate history. I think it is important to point out, alex, this is the first time they have gone after legal immigrants. These people in springfield are there legally. They are not illegal in any way. They have status. They have been told by the government of our country they are there, they can work, they can raise their families. The fact that they are going after them, they really crossed a border here. You know. And said, now, we are going to try to demonize people who have legal status in this country. And, the republican mayor is saying dont come here. This is total b. S. The republican governor is saying that this is garbage. The employers of these haitian legal immigrants have said they are wonderful employees, people of springfield spoken out saying leave us alone. We are fine. All of that. And now they are going to continue to try to marginalize these people and in the long run impact these childrens lives in a way they will never, ever forget as long as they are alive. It is such it is such a searing point, claire. You mentioned the way j. D. Vance, given a chance to admit he is wrong, the eating of dogs and cats is not happening in springfield doubled down in that interview on cnn and said basically it is a means to an end. If people are caught up in it, so it. This is what it takes to get people to understand the stakes, i guess, of the Immigration Crisis as the right wing would have them what do you think about his answer . Reporter well, what we are facing in this country right now is nothing short of a State Of Emergency when it comes to reproductive care. To your point, doctors, refusing to provide care in places where they are under these bans, even care that is not related to reproductive care because they dont want to be under a microscope of the goffment and having the government telling them how to provide care. The ramifications of these Abortion Bans of the fall of Roe V. Wade are far and they are wide and people are living with the devastating consequences every day. Ambers story is so heartbreaking and tragic we have a child who will grow up without a mother because of it. But what is more horrifying is the fact that this is happening to people all over the country every day. And, people are living in fear, in panic, and they are not able to get the care that they need. That really is what is the heart of this conversation around the future of reproductive future. How do we chart a way back. It will be democratic leader, particularly prochoice women that will lead us out of this if we elect them this november. I do wonder, you know, we are now beginning to get the first bits of reporting of women who not just suffered but lost their lives because of these Abortion Bans, i wonder what you think it does to the national conversation. It has not changed Donald Trump or j. D. Vances position but does it move people in the way that other stories of women bleeding out in Parking Lots but surviving does it change people who now might be moved to do something about it. And, when leaders like the Vice President and Vice President harris speak about there and they talk about their work on this they are doing this from a place where they understand how deeply personal it is. The Chief Justice responded by deploying his authority to steer rulings that benefited mr. Trump according to a New York times examination that uncovered extensive new information about the courts decision making. We were wrong because we really believe that even though John Roberts was conservative through and through, and shared the goals of the conservative legal movements, that he was not a mega maga extremist, that he does not support the excesses of trumpism and that he would at least attempt to guide his court toward some kind of middle ground in at least some cases that involve Donald Trump in the election and the reality is, we were wrong about that. You know, this new reporting demonstrates that roberts really froze out his liberal colleagues when they came to him attempting to make compromises in these momentous cases. Instead, he was delusional enough to believe the praise from sycophants like Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh who promised him that these would be decisions for the ages and that the public would embrace and celebrate a Sweeping Ruling Granting Trump Criminal immunity for attempting to support the 2020 election. I think we believe that roberts still had some eagerness for compromise and we thought that he cared about the courts institutional legitimacy is a good in itself when in reality he wants to know just how far he can push the court before he breaks it, how much she can get away with and as long as he does not think that he is going to destroy the institution he will push to help Donald Trump in every way possible. To that end, he was offered effectively in Olive Branch from the liberals on the court who were ready to make deals on some of these cases and he basically rebuffed them. That shocked me. I dont know how you process to that information. I was stunned. I think that was a real mask off moment because when John Roberts first was potentially relegated to the sideline after Amy Coney Barrett replaced ruth Bader Ginsburg there was this new hardcore fivejustice conservative majority. John roberts did not immediately join them in every case. He famously declines to overturn Roe V wade and some Shadow Docket decisions she said that the conservatives to his right had gone too far and it seems that he kind of just got sick of losing. He decided that losing was for suckers and so instead, because he could not beat them, he joined the five conservative some sort of almost out conservative to them in these cases, presenting himself as trumps chief defender Behind The Scenes. That was startling to me because previously it seems that he had some contempt for Trumps Extremism and had spoken out, in fact, about trumps degradation of the Judiciary But None of that skepticism toward trump came through in these decisions and it appears that roberts never wavered Behind The Scenes and his commitment to giving trump all the immunity that he wanted and more and Positioning Trump to achieve a major victory in 2024 that would let him reshape the Law even further in his own image. It just feels like we need more leaks from this court. You think were going to get them . I do. I think we have entered a great new age of supreme Court Reporting for journalists are no longer just ethnographers for the justices, but are asking difficult questions, cultivating sources Behind The Scenes and treating the court like the institution of fLawed government employees than it actually is.
