Untold stories of latinos and how they shaped america. Im jonathan capehart, this is the saturday show. We are just 38 days from the u. S. Presidential election in november and a dramatic escalation in the Middle East is taking Center Stage and sparking fears of a wider conflict in the region. Today, the Israel Defense forces and hezbollah confirmed that Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in targeted israeli airstrikes on the Groups Headquarters in Southern Beirut. The strike destroyed at least for residential complexes and damaged other buildings nearby. At least 11 people were killed and more than 100 injured according to the lebanese health ministry. The idf continued lobbing rockets into Lebanon Today targeting Hezbollah Infrastructure in Southern Beirut and issued Evacuation Orders for several neighborhoods as civilians flee to the north. Iran, condemned the strike, calling it a war crime. But so far, iran has not expressed any intention to retaliate. The White House said today that President Biden held a call with Vice President harris and the national Security Team for an update on the situation in the Middle East. The president also released a statement that said, quote, Hassan Nasrallahs death is a measure of justice for his many victims including thousands of americans, israelis and lebanese civilians but the president added, ultimately our aim is to deescalate the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza And Lebanon through diplomatic means. The State Department is urging americans to leave lebanon while commercial flights are still available and the u. S. Embassy order The Departure of Family Members of american diplomats due to volatile security conditions. Joining me now with the latest is Erin Mcglocklin, live from Tel Aviv, thank you for being here. What are you hearing from israeli leaders about the death of nasrallah and the next steps in lebanon . Jonathan, a few hours ago we heard from the israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing israelis in hebrew for the first time since the israeli military confirmed that killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, and in his statement to the israeli public, the Prime Minister explained the decision behind the assassination. Take a listen. I gave Instruction And Nasrallah is no longer with us. His killing brings close to the return of our people in the north to their homes and the return of the hostages from the south because as sinwar sees that they will come to his rescue, this increases the chance for hostages going back. Many in the region would dispute that calculus that somehow the death of Hassan Nasrallah would compel the leader of hamas, sinwar to release the hostages, some here arguing that if anything, it pushes the region further into the unknown. Now, in terms of the timing of all of this in his statement to the israeli public, prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he made the decision to carry out the assassination early in the week, and that is notable because jonathan, if you remember around midweek, thats when we heard from u. S. And french officials unveiled their plan, that would create the space for a diplomatic resolution of this crisis, the nscs John Kirby saying that israel signaled that it was open to the plan and yet tonight, Benjamin Netanyahu is saying that he made the decision to assassinate Hassan Nasrallah earlier in the week. Todays events leaving lots of questions about that communication between Tel Aviv and washington, d. C. jonathan. Is the idf expecting large Scale Retaliation from hezbollah . Reporter i think ive lost you, jonathan. Okay, Erin Mcglocklin, we will leave it there. Thank you for the live report. Lets bring in the former Supreme Allied Commander for nato admiral, as always, thank you for coming to the saturday show. I want to reread the last part of the statement from President Biden about the death of nasrallah he writes, ultimately our aim is to deescalate the conflicts in Gaza And Lebanon through diplomatic means. Is that even possible, when it seems as though the israeli Prime Minister and been especially given what Erin Mcglocklin just told us doesnt seem to want a diplomatic solution. Let me start with nasrallah, he has more blood on his hands from americans that i think many listeners really imagine, going back to when i graduated from the Naval Academy in the 1970s, hezbollah was Killing Americans in the early 80s in beirut. Hes been tied up in this for decades. No, theres no way to put anything on this but he is an enemy of the united states of america. Having said that, the way to think about this, jonathan is, israel is trying as you heard from there Prime Minister to get back into their homes and knocked back down the constant firing of missiles from hezbollah to the north. Here in the west and here we get to your excellent question, the west, both the u. S. france, uk, european union, everybody is going to press for a ceasefire. I think it is unlikely in the immediate term to get a real ceasefire. Heres the good news, such as it is. I think it is also unlikely that this thing expands into a wider regional war, which i define as including iran, the united states then pulled in, i think the chances of that are actually low. We are going to see continued turbulence. You anticipate my next two questions. Can israel afford to have a conflict with hamas and gaza and with hezbollah on its northern border . Ill answer that is a former Supreme Allied Commander, the short answer is, yes, israel has the capability having subdued, shall we say, hamas, and gaza and they are in the process of decommissioning tunnels. The fighting has now shifted to the north. The Center Of Gravity military term, is up in the north against hezbollah, israel has plenty of Military Capability to take the fight north. And where we were a moment ago, will iran Step In, they are not interested in bringing iranians into the fight. I dont see that happening. Israel has plenty of Military Capability to continue to go after hezbollah in the north. You did it again because i was going to ask you about a wider conflicts but what about iran and you answer the question and the short answer is no. Can we talk about lebanon, all eyes were here in New York and washington with the visit of the ukrainian president this week as part of the united nations general assembly. And im just wondering, one of the goals of president zelinski in his meeting with the president was to get him to agree, to give permission, gave him permission to use long range weapons to strike deep inside russia as part of the effort to push back the russian war on ukraine. At this point in the war, why is President Biden still resistant to letting him do that . Let me first say to your point, this is why i love being on your show, jonathan, you are looking at something that not everyone is focused on at the moment and youre absolutely right to bring up ukraine in this. I think very significant decision on the part of the u. S. to permit longerrange strikes into ukraine, using u. S. Weapons. I think ultimately, the u. S. Will agree to doing that. And my evidence would be, at every stage of this conflict, the u. S. Has been hesitant to provide patriot tanks, even stingers and javelins early on, and every stage, ultimately, we have ended up providing those systems, most notably, to include the f16s that are operating today. So i think we will get there and the answer to your question and its a good one, its a debatable point is, if we gave them permission to strike inside of ukraine, could it truly escalate the situation to where putin would use for example, a Tactical Nuclear Weapon . I think that is worth debating in my view, we have crossed this redline so many times, it doesnt make a lot of sense to hold the ukrainians back, given a 300 Mile Zone in russia, dont strike moscow or st. Petersburg but it makes sense to give them permission to reach and go after military targets. I think thats how this one comes out, jonathan. Admiral, thank you very much for coming to the saturday show. Always a treat. Com or call 1800sandals Yesterday for the first time as the democratic nominee the Vice President visited the southern border thus putting a spotlight on a top issue for voters in a seeming liability for her party, immigration. Vice president harris traveled to douglas, arizona, where she gave a Speech Laying out specific plans to reduce illegal crossings which includes keeping the border closed between ports of entry and also used her address to shine a light on Donald Trumps immigration hypocrisy. He continues to attack her on this issue but she reminded voters that it was trump who worked Behind The Scenes to prolong the immigration crisis. As president i wont only bring back the Border Security Bill that Donald Trump tanked, i will do more to secure our border. It was the strongest Border Security Bill we have seen in decades. It was endorsed by the border patrol union. And it should be in effect today. But Donald Trump tanked it. He picks up the phone and called some friends in congress and said stop the bill. Because you see, he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. Of course, in true trump fashion, he has now denied any involvement in the failure of the bipartisan Border Security Bill and instead of offering any sound policy to address the issue, he continues to fall back on racism and white nationalism. A short while ago at an event in wisconsin, he ramped up his attacks on migrants while also taking an unhinged swipe at President Biden and Vice President harris. Across our border, theyve been taken out by their countries, and set free into the united states of america, so they are free to kill again. These are killers. Not even mentioning the , the gang members, the Drug Dealers , the child predators and the traffickers and women, mostly women, Joe Biden became mentally impaired, kamala was born that way. Joining me now, cedric richmond, a cochair for the harris walz campaign. Mr. Richmond as always thank you for coming to the saturday show. First, your reaction to that last bit that you just heard from Donald Trump . Thats a soundbite from a man that is not well. And i hate to put it that simple, but hes not. Even if you look at his response to him taking the Border Bill when he said he had nothing to do with it, there are multiple clips of him saying that he did. That he made Telephone Calls to kill it. In fact cedric, we have that sound. So everyone can hear for themselves what you are talking about. There is zero chance i will support this horrible, open borders the trail of america. Its not gonna happen. I noticed that, and i will fight it all the way. I notice a lot of the senators, a lot of the senators are blaming it on me i said okay, blame it on me, please. Make up some lives, like she said about the Border Bill that trump stopped. Number 1 i didnt stop it. Cedric, folks got to hear exactly what you were talking about, the first piece was from january of this year. Taking credit and the last piece was just last week. Denying he ever said what we just heard him say. Cedric, can you hear me . I can. You went out for a second and i will just say that the sad part is, i dont know if he knows the difference between The Truth and lies. And i used to say when i was in congress, when he told over 20,000 lies i thought just he was a habitual liar but im starting to think that he just cant tell The Truth. But heres the bigger part. It has always been about Donald Trump. Its never been about the american people. And so yes, he tanked the bill and did it for his own Self Gain and if you look at his political career, its all about his own political gain, thats why he winds up in trouble and thats why hes twice impeached, thats why hes indicted, because he put himself above the country, Above The Law and at some point we have to have an honest conversation about that he is in it just for himself so the contrast is, a harris walz campaign, thats going to wake up every day fighting for the american people, trying to bring costs down at the stores, trying to bring Housing Costs down, investing in an Opportunity Economy so people can prosper not just get by, they can get ahead. So it is a contrast and i hate to spend so much time talking about him because hes not deserving but we have an obligation to remind the american people of who he is and what he wants to do and that is, believe it or not, he is convincing all of these rural voters, many of them white, that he cares about them. No, he doesnt. He was in office for four years and passed a Tax Cut where middleclass and people aspiring to be in the Middle Class were paying for the Tax Cuts, the 2 Trillion in Tax Cuts that he gave to billionaires and the top 1 . Now hes talking about a 200 tariff on John Deere thats going to run up the cost of tractors and Farm Equipment thats going to further hurt rural america, this guy does not get it and its all about him and thats why i think Vice President harris and Governor Walz are going to continue to talk to the american people about their vision for them. Governor walz will have a big opportunity to talk to the american people when he debates senator Jd Vance at the debate i believe it is here in New York on tuesday, on october 1st. What will the mission be for Governor Walz, to expose vance as a fraud like his boss, defend the Vice President from attack, present the vision of a harris walz administration, or is it All Of The Above . I think its a little bit of All Of The Above. One the governor has to introduce himself to the rest of the country. And i think he will get a chance to talk about his values and the fact that as a public school teacher, as a coach, as a veteran, all those things that he has always looked at the greater good, The Common Good and how to lift this country up together, and i think hes going to do a magnificent job of that. I think Jd Vance has some things answer for. He was trumps biggest Credit Critic until he wasnt. And the things that he said about trump back then were absolutely right. You will see from Jd Vance, you will see a disciplined but a dishonest and divisive Conversation And Rhetoric coming from him. And it will not be based in fact, whatsoever. He has inherited the gene from his running mate, Donald Trump, and i think you will see a lot of that in the debate, unfortunately. After the debate, both the Vice President and Governor Walz will be going on a Bus Tour of central pennsylvania, edit things like at least one of the four principles, they have been in pennsylvania it seems, every day since the ticket was announced. Should i read anything into that, are yall concerned that pennsylvania is slipping away, just because of all the time thats being spent in pennsylvania . No, we actually believe that the voters in pennsylvania deserve to hear from the candidates, they need to know what we are going to do for them. I think the Vice President has been very clear that she wouldnt ban freight fracking, she didnt, she voted to expand it and she will continue it. And we have to make sure that people in pennsylvania understand that we want to build an economy that is working for everyone. And we want to listen to their concerns and address their concerns but we are spreading out all across the country because we have multiple paths to 270. Pennsylvania is a big part of it, george is a big part, North Carolina is a big part. Theres a big part but we are going to spend sometime everywhere but the people of pennsylvania deserve to hear from us. Cedric richmond, cochair of the harris walz campaign, congressman, thank you very much, as always, for coming to the saturday show. Thanks for having me. Coming up, the mayors mass, new York Mayor Eric Adams is facing growing calls to resign after being charged with bribery and fraud. Discussing the scandal facing the leader of the nations largest city and what it might mean for other top democrats. Ts trains that use the power of Dell Ai and intel. To
