Good morning. 11 00 a. M. Eastern, 8 00 a. M. Pacific. Im Jose Diazbalart. We begin this hour with breaking news, a brandnew Jobs Report beating expectations. The government reporting employers added 254,000 jobs in september, thats well above the 150,000 predicted by most economists. The Unemployment Rate fell slightly to 4. 1 . And when you break it down by race, both the black and hispanic Unemployment Rates fell by. 4 last month. There you see the drop. This report comes hours after Port Workers and Port Operators along the East And Gulf coasts reached a tentative deal to end a strike that began on tuesday. That walkout threatened to bring chaos at the start of the holiday shopping season. With us now, cnbcs dominic chu. Dom, good morning. This was a strong Jobs Report. What else did we learn from it . Good morning, jose. Yes, it stands in stark contrast, this Jobs Report, what we saw the previous month, which got read as a very big at least disappointment. What we did note beyond just the Headline Numbers that you pointed out for unemployment and the jobs created, both, by the way, like you point out very positive, we also add to that some of the Wage Data that came in. Better than expected on a month over month basis. Those average hourly earnings up. 4 , a month over month gain. Also, a year over Year Gain of 4 . That data suggests that the american economy at least for now remains relatively resilient and is holding up well, given some of the signs over the last several months of a bit of a cooling in that labor market dynamic. Now, the months of july and august also saw their numbers revised actually higher by a combined 72,000 jobs. As for where the jobs are, the biggest additions were in places like hospitality and leisure, also healthcare, social Assistance And Government hiring. This report is also getting a lot of scrutiny from traders and investors who are using it to handicap the odds of the federal reserves next interest Rate Move, which comes in november. And then again another Rate Move in december. This stronger report has now showed that there are dampened expectations for bigger Interest Rate cuts at the next couple of meetings. Jose, there is now more of an expectation for measured and smaller Quarter Percentage cuts going forward as opposed to that bigger Half Percentage Point cut we saw last september. The tentative deal to end the port strike. Sure, thats right. Tentative is the key word there. These dockworkers across the Eastern Seaboard and the Gulf Coast regions are out now back to work after a strike that lasted for three days. But there is still a lot of stuff to hammer out for a fullfledged Employment Deal to get approved by Union Leaders and ultimately approved by the workers themselves. The big hurdle that was overcome overnight came to pay. Leaders at the international Longshoremens Association and the United States Maritime Alliance agreed to an ultimate Pay Raise of 61. 1 that will be phased in over the course of six years under this agreement. But the bigger issue to a longer Term Contract is going to center around the role of automation in the industry over the next several years. How much automation will replace human workloads, and then what the timeline is for implementation of those automation measures. Those are likely key issues that are still under negotiation. But in order to work towards that bigger deal, leaders on both sides of the Negotiating Table have agreed to extend their current Labor Deal until january 15th, jose, so thats why tentative and not fully done just yet. Dominic chu, thank you so very much. Appreciate it. We are just 32 days away from the election and the race between Vice President harris and former President Trump is still very tight. Today, both Trump And Harris will be in key battleground states. Vice president harris will hold a rally in michigan. Trump will visit georgia and North Carolina and tomorrow, trump will return to butler, pennsylvania, the site of the first Assassination Attempt on his life. All of this, One Day after Vice President Harris Campaigned with former congresswoman Liz Cheney. Former republican congresswoman Liz Cheney in the Wisconsin Town where the Republican Party was born. I tell you, i have never voted for a democrat. But this year i am proudly casting my vote for Vice President kamala harris. What January 6th shows us is that there is not an ounce, not an ounce of compassion in Donald Trump, he is petty, he is vindictive, and he is cruel. And Donald Trump is not fit to lead this good and great nation. With us now, nbc News Correspondent Dasha Burns in butler, pennsylvania, matthew dowd, senior msnbc political analyst, and juanita tolliver, msnbc political Analyst And Author of the upcoming book a more perfect party. Dasha, you were at trumps event in butler in july when those shots rang out. I remember that it was just right before the beginning of nbc nightly News And Everything happened in real time. What is the symbolism behind Donald Trump returning to butler . Reporter well, look, jose, the Trump Campaign wants to make this a significant moment for the former president , and for this community. So many people impacted here, so many of those rallygoers impacted. The list of speakers is long and it includes first responders, it includes the family of Corey Comperatore who was shot, this is something that is a bit of catharsis, a bit of a Healing Process for the people who were here. I interviewed several of the rallygoers right in the aftermath of that event and i went back and spoke with some of them including a mother and son, donna and joe, theyre planning to come back here tomorrow. I asked them why. Take a listen. Why are you going back . Im going back for a few reasons. Number one, joe, joey wants to go. Im going back for that, number one. Number two, i believe in President Trump. I believe in this country. I believe this is our last chance. Just to get to prove to people they Cant Scare us, get to shove it to them. Youre not going to scare us away from the ballots. Not going to scare us away from the rally. Reporter jose, there are also some big names attending this rally, Elon Musk tweeted earlier this morning that hes planning to be there. And i will tell you the Security Posture could not be more different from the last time that we were here. The entire area is locked down, you cant get anywhere near the rally site. We were chatting with some of the Merchandise Vendors behind me, they said last time they were here, they were able to roam the site pretty freely, check out where everything was getting set up. Now security is turning people away, there are line of site blockades, Shipping Containers and other big items that are blocking line of site from outside of the rally and, of course, the Security Posture, Secret Service, Pennsylvania State police, local Law Enforcement, emergency management, all of that out in full force here, jose. Dasha, you are an extraordinary journalist, but i want to ask you, on a personal note, what are you thinking . Reporter thank you for asking, jose. I weighed the decision whether or not i wanted to come here, to be honest with you, because it is something that i didnt expect, i didnt expect to have the reaction that i had to this, it was a challenge in the days and weeks afterwards and it does feel a little strange to be back here. There is an unsettled feeling, but at the same time, you know, donna told me that the the woman you heard from there, she did Trauma Therapy afterwards, i did too and her therapist told her this was a step in that Healing Process and i think i feel really similarly that, you know, coming back here and being with the people who experienced this, my fellow journalists and crews, and the rallygoers, i mean, everyone went through this together in such a and to be back and to speak to some of the people again, and all check in on each other, see where were at, see how were coping, thats been really important, jose. Dasha burns, extraordinary journalist, extraordinary human being. Thank you very much, dasha. Matthew, the Assassination Attempt in butler was a big moment in the campaign. What will returning to Butler Mean for the Trump Campaign . I mean, my perception of this from a Campaign Standpoint is i dont think it is going to have any movement or any persuasion on voters. I think to me this is much more about Donald Trump and what hes going through and what he the part he wants to play in this that has to do with voters. Im actually surprised theyre going back again to here. To me, as i say, it is much more about, i guess, Donald Trump personally and what he wants to experience as opposed to what i think going to impact voters around pennsylvania or in any of the seven target states. Lets talk about Liz Cheney was with the Vice President , her rally in wisconsin Last Night. President biden praised cheney saying it took courage to do what she did. How unusual is this . It is highly highly unusual, and historic moment. To me, ive made it akin to if Barry Goldwater 1964 who ran against lbj, a conservative, started the conservative movement, ran and lost, if after the election he said im ready to Support Lbj and serve in his cabinet, it would be the same magnitude as this. She is a diehard red conservative, who stood the line on conservatives, her and her family for decades in this, and for her to endorse a senator, a former senator from california, who served under Joe Biden as Vice President , is historic. And to me, the impact it will have is two fold. One, i think it sends a signal to the independent voters that Vice President can be bipartisan, will approach this and welcome in all people of political persuasions. And, two, soft republicans who dont feel like they can make a leap to vote for Vice President harris, i think Liz Cheney sends a signal that says, if you Cant Vote for harris, which she says she wants them to, just go ahead and skip and dont vote for the president ial race, which could have more impact than the persuasion of independent voters. Interesting. Just your thoughts on this, Dick Cheney with former Vice President Mike Pence got applause when their names were mentioned Last Night. Is is there any cost for democrats to be bringing in the Cheney Family . I feel like the cost is outweighed by the potential reward here, jose, because this is something that is an extension of what we saw in the democratic Convention Stage where plenty of republicans were invited to speak, and kind of present this on ramp for disaffected republicans and independent voters to supporting Vice President harris. But something that matt mentioned about the historic significance of this is also tied to the historic threat that these individuals collectively view in Donald Trump. One other scenario, what we see headlines of Vice President harris on stage, with Liz Cheney, and then next week on stage with former president Barack Obama, except for in this sense of a need to build the coalition, to keep Donald Trump out of the oval office, i think it comes down to the main themes that were stated on stage in wisconsin yesterday, about both Liz Cheney and Vice President harris, that this is about preserving and protecting the constitution. This is about preserving and protecting our democracy. And thats a message that appeals to republicans, independents and democrats, so that they can align in november. And, former President Obama is set to campaign for Vice President harris starting in pennsylvania next week. We also saw Bruce Springsteen endorsing harris yesterday. How much do the endorsements help the Harris Campaign and there is a big difference between celebrities and Barack Obama, hes a celebrity, but the weight he carries is still one of the most popular if not the most popular democrat in the nation, right . So i think that having him out on the campaign trail, getting the endorsement from Bruce Springsteen, this is critical. Now it is about getting people to return those absentee ballots, mail in their ballots, Finish Voter Registration as Deadlines Approach and get to the polls in november. So these endorsements are absolutely going to be part of that mobilization. Remember, Barack Obama not only is he popular, but hes One Of The Best dynamic orators in politics. Having that voice on the campaign trail, that familiar voice, that will bring up a lot of nostalgia and good feeling, not only for democrats, but some independents. I think thats going to be really help buttress the coalition that Vice President harris is developing. Matthew dowd and juanita tolliver, thank you very much.
