Thomson said while he hadn’t lost any stock, the flooding had damaged fence lines and deposited large amounts of silt all over the farm. Federated Farmers Nelson president Martin O’Connor said it was a similar story for farmers all over the region, although it was still hard to gauge what the overall level of damage was yet. O’Connor said many farms had suffered infrastructure damage around the edges, particularly with fence posts being ripped out and fences clogged with flood debris. He said so far it appeared there were no major stock losses in the region, although there had been about 60 sheep taken away by the floodwaters near Tapawera.
