NEW LEXINGTON - At an age where children are typically learning how to navigate basic cooking methods, New Lexington School District officials see a little more potential. The district recently held its first Emergent Culinary Arts program for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students that explores basic culinary and recipe skills. Seasoned professionals lead the three-class sessions in the culinary classroom at the high school, during an after-school program. But for Chuck Byers, who coordinates the district's employability and credentialing program, the learning doesn't stop when the food was done. They're taking home valuable skills for their futures. "When you’re thinking about cooking, you’re thinking what’s a mixture? What's a (measurement)?" he said. “It's very academic."
