Sanogo, the freshman forward, spun and powered his way to a career-high 12 points, including a couple of nifty inside hoops early in the second half that kept a charging St. John’s at bay. Meanwhile, Champagnie, who entered the game as the Big East’s leading scorer at 20.7 points per game, couldn’t get anything going against the aggressive defense of Isaiah Whaley and Tyrese Martin. He didn’t score his first field goal until about 7 1/2 minutes remained in the game.
