The accident took place at about 11:30 p.m. on Route 66 as Officer Matthew Knowlton was headed west, police said. According to police, Knowlton saw a car headed toward him in the opposite lane at high speed, and his radar check clocked the driver at more than 70 mph in a 35 mph-zone. On the Police Department’s Facebook site, a post about the accident says that as the car approached Knowlton, “it crossed the double yellow lines entering his lane and striking his cruiser as he attempted to avoid the collision.”
