The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District is looking for public input. On Saturday, the district hosted an open house, where dozens of people offered input on development plans for a portion of Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel. "This is your park. This park is for everyone," said Jackie Nelson, an environmental educational supervisor with the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. The district heard from people during their open house on what people would like to see at a portion of the Palo Corona Regional Park. In 2018, the park district obtained 185 acres of Palo Corona, which used to be the Rancho Canada Golf Course. Nelson said, "We've always valued public opinion,"Opinions like from two couples who met five years ago with a similar thought in mind. "It seemed this community lacked a safe playground, fenced off-leash for dogs," said Linda Mullally, part of the "Dog Park Four" group. The two couples are dubbed the "Dog Park Four." They've since gathered 400 signatures, attended Monterey Peninsula Park District board meetings, and succeeded. In 2018, after acquiring the land the board approved a 3-acre dog park. 2.5 acres of fenced-off, off-leash space for big dogs. Half an acre for small dogs. The dog park portion of Palo Corna is also accessible for those with mobility limitations "We really felt like this was a lifetime opportunity for all the residents in the surrounding area to have a piece of ground like this, beautiful view," said Norman Leve, "Dog Park Four" member. Carmel residents are also looking forward to the new park. "We're very excited for the dog park...Callie is more so than I am," said Jeannine Borden, a Carmel resident with her dog Callie. The dog park will also be used as a staging area for Cal Fire and other agencies during wildfires. The rest of the nearly 190 acres will also include restrooms, picnic pavilions, an outdoor classroom, an amphitheater, among other plans.
