One of Google's earliest employees is stepping down.

Urs Hölzle — the eighth employee to join Google back in 1999 — is transitioning from his position as Google’s Senior Vice President for Technical Infrastructure, into a new role as a Google Fellow following two decades in leadership roles at the company. Hölzle was Google’s first search engine mechanic, later going on to help develop the computing infrastructure behind its cloud division.
