Police conduct homeless sweep at Chapman Square The Portland Police Bueau said the camp was swept because of criminal activity. Portland police cleared out a homeless camp reportedly due to criminal activity on the morning of Tuesday, June 1. Lieutenant Greg Pashley with the Portland Police Bureau said officers conducted an abatement at Chapman Square, which is carried out in the event of criminal and unlawful activity. An abatement was first conducted in the area on April 4, but Lt. Pashley said there have been several events involving crime and arrests connected to those living in the area since then. Police said four incidents have taken place in the last week, alone. Yet, they did not clarify what type of criminal activity had occurred.
