Narrated by Patton Oswalt, the eight-part series follows real-life African penguins who flock to the shores of Simon’s Town, south of Cape Town, every summer to mate. The pressure is real: The species has been endangered since 2010, and in 2019 there were only about 17,700 left.

Penguin Town, however, trades the doom-and-gloom tone for a more lighthearted approach. Oswalt’s narration is cheeky and peppers in puns. We get interesting tidbits, like the fact that penguins swim an average of about 16 kilometres a day. And since the script gives its flightless critters human characteristics, their shenanigans are relatable.
