Peoria Public Schools to explore a balanced calendar school year

PEORIA — Tabled two years ago because a number of schools lacked air conditioning, the balanced calendar is once again being considered by Peoria Public Schools.
The balanced school calendar creates more balance between learning days and break days, said Sandra Wilson, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction during a presentation at the school board meeting Monday evening. While the winter and spring breaks are longer — 15 days in the example she presented — the summer break is shorter — 30 days as opposed to the traditional 60-day summer break.
“The idea is that during those 15 days off the school district can do lots of things ... Our intention is to use those 15 days to provide intense academic interventions for our students,” said Wilson.
