HE JOINS US LIVE IN PLATTSBURGH tonight. WITH THE result of the city's investigation. BRANDON. BRIAN... PLATTSBURGH POLICE SAY CROSSING GUARD MAURICE DANIELS HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH HARASSMENT IN THE SECOND DEGREE. A WARNING TO OUR VIEWERS THE VIDEO YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE MAY BE DISTURBING TO SOME. THIS VIRAL VIDEO...OF CROSSING GUARD MAURICE DANIELS ALLEGEDLY SLAPPING A STAFFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT......LEAD TO A WEEKS LONG INVESTIGATION BY THE PLATTSBURG POLICE...AND A HARASSMENT CHARGE FOR DANIELS. TAKE SOT: (0:15) There was about 15 to 20 people interviewed, a number of videos that were reviewed. The recommendation is a harassment charge against Mr. Daniels with a suspension in employment pending the outcome of the investigation. ACCORDING TO PLATTSBURGH POLICE DEPARTMENT CAPTAIN, BRAD KIROY, THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE ON THE CHARGE IS 15 DAYS IN JAIL. AS FOR HOW THE CHARGE WAS DECIDED, MAYOR CHRIS ROSENQUEST SAYS IT WASN'T DONE LIGHTLY. TAKE SOT: (0:16) There was a number of factors that went into that specific charge. Conversations with the DA, the evidence itself, the entire situation and all of the interviews that they performed as a part of this process. Coming up with that recommendation for a criminal charge, it seemed to be the most fitting. CAPTAIN KIROY SAYS THEY CANNOT DISCUSS ANY MATTERS RELATED TO THE STUDENT DUE TO HIS JUVENILE STATUS. ROSENQUEST SAYS THERE WILL BE A FOCUS ON TRAINING CROSSING GUARDS IN THE FUTURE. TAKE SOT: (0:18) They don't get sufficient training for being able to manage these stressful situations, to be able to manage these sometimes contentious relationships that we have with our students. So there's a revisit to what type of training these folks should be having and the frequency at which they should be having this training.
