Power grid needs to be changed to handle renewable energy, say wind developers Public and political support needed to deliver the infrastructure, climate committee told about 4 hours ago Updated: about an hour ago Ireland has exceptional untapped wind resources, particularly offshore, which equates to 10 times the 5,000 megawatts currently installed on the island of Ireland.
Ireland will have a sufficient amount of renewable wind energy projects to help reduce carbon emissions by 51 per cent over the next decade but the biggest issue is having a sufficiently strong power grid, the OireachtasClimate Committee has been told. Acting chief executive of Wind Energy Ireland (WEI) Noel Cunniffe said a complete redesign and reinforcement of the transmission system, with a focus on parts of the country where large volumes of renewable energy are located needed to be developed.
